Black Ops 7 players criticized calling-card illustrations they believed looked AI-generated, but the reports do not confirm that any specific card was made with AI. Activision has disclosed that generative AI tools helped develop some in-game assets, while saying studio staff continue to lead the creative process. Those are separate claims: the disclosure does not identify the assets, and player suspicion is not proof of an individual card’s provenance.
What sparked the criticism
At the game’s November 14, 2025 launch, players focused on calling-card illustrations they thought looked AI-generated, including imagery described as Ghibli-style. PC Gamer reported comments such as “So these calling cards are DEFINITELY AI generated right?” and “how can I pay 70 bucks for such AI slop.” Those are examples of player reactions quoted in its coverage, not survey results or confirmation about the art.
The word “slop” captures the tone of the criticism; it is not an established description of how the images were produced. PC Gamer treated the attribution as uncertain, and GameSpot reported that Activision had not specified which assets received AI assistance. PC Gamer’s launch-day report and GameSpot’s coverage of the Steam disclosure describe the two parts of the dispute.
What Activision disclosed—and what it did not
AI tools were used on some in-game assets
GameSpot reported that Black Ops 7’s Steam page contained this disclosure: “Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in-game assets.” The wording confirms AI assistance somewhere in the game’s asset development; it does not name the assets or establish that the disputed calling cards were among them.

The publisher says studio staff lead the creative process
An Activision spokesperson told Insider Gaming, in a statement reported November 14, 2025: “Like so many around the world, we use a variety of digital tools, including AI tools, to empower and support our teams to create the best gaming experiences possible for our players. Our creative process continues to be led by the talented individuals in our studios.” This states the company’s position on its process. It is not independent verification of how any particular image was made.
Read together, the disclosure and the statement distinguish tool use from creative leadership. Neither supplies asset-by-asset provenance. The available reports therefore do not settle whether AI generated or assisted any of the calling cards that players questioned.

In a December 9, 2025 community update, Activision acknowledged that some players felt the franchise had not met expectations, announced a free trial and seasonal support, and said it would stop releasing Modern Warfare or Black Ops games back-to-back. The update did not explicitly tie those steps to the calling-card criticism, so it should not be treated as confirmation that the company changed course because of the AI-art dispute.
