Blizzard changed the Spiritborn Evade setup by fixing animation cancellation that let players evade faster than the standard rate. The Diablo IV 2.0 patch notes describe it as a bug fix and say Evade’s cast rate is now normalized in all scenarios. In practice, that curtailed the rapid Evade build; Blizzard did not describe this change as a damage reduction.
What Blizzard changed
The affected setup was commonly identified as the Spiritborn Evade build in contemporaneous reporting. Blizzard’s patch notes describe the class mechanic rather than naming a specific build: Spiritborn could cancel Evade’s animation mid-action, allowing another Evade to begin sooner than intended.

Blizzard’s developer note says: “Spiritborn’s Evade could be cast more rapidly than normal depending on the input method and speed. It is now normalized to the standard Evade cast rate in all scenarios.” The notes give no numerical rate or before-and-after timing.

Why players called it a nerf
The change removed the rapid repeat-Evade behavior that made the setup work, so “nerf” describes its practical effect on that build. Blizzard framed the change as correcting animation cancellation and an unintended cast rate. The cited notes describe timing, not a reduction to a damage multiplier.

A contemporaneous Reddit post reproducing a statement attributed to Blizzard community director Adam Fletcher said the Evade animation could break animation frames and that Blizzard would prevent an Evade from starting instantly during another Evade. Fletcher’s reproduced statement said the bug was being addressed because it was impairing other players’ in-game experience. The post said the change was expected in patch 2.0.3; the official patch notes are the source for the documented fix.

This Evade fix is separate from later balance decisions. In a November 2024 Campfire recap, Blizzard said it would not nerf Spiritborn in that midseason patch and planned Season 7 adjustments as bug fixes. That statement concerned a later patch window; it did not reverse the earlier Evade change.

Still later, Blizzard’s Season of Hell’s Legacy announcement described separate Spiritborn adjustments, including a fix to a Tzic Rune bug that granted a large damage increase and a reduction to Aspect of Supremacy’s maximum stacks, alongside buffs to Spiritborn Paragon boards, Core Skills, Potency Skills, and Unique weapons. Those broader changes do not establish whether the Evade build is currently viable or how it ranks.
