Blizzard’s Lawsuit Shut Down Turtle WoW as Project Ascension Faces a Separate Case

Blizzard did sue Turtle WoW, but the case was filed in 2025 and ended with a settlement, permanent injunction and server shutdown in May 2026. The newer lawsuit targets Project Ascension.

Yes—Blizzard sued the operators of Turtle WoW. But the lawsuit was filed in August 2025, not in 2026. The case ended with a confidential settlement and permanent injunctive relief, and Turtle WoW’s official servers went offline on May 15, 2026. The lawsuit reported in June 2026 was a separate case against Project Ascension, another unauthorized World of Warcraft private server.

What happened to Turtle WoW?

Turtle WoW was a fan-operated World of Warcraft private server that had reportedly operated since around 2018. It recreated a classic-era WoW experience while adding custom quests, systems and fan-made expansions. It was not an official Blizzard Classic+ server and operated separately from Blizzard’s retail and Classic services.

Blizzard Entertainment sued Turtle WoW’s operators in federal court in California in August 2025. The defendants included entities and individuals associated with the project, including AFKCraft Ltd. Later reporting described claims involving unauthorized use and distribution of World of Warcraft software, copyright and trademark infringement, circumvention of technical protections, and operation of an unauthorized modified game service. Legal reporting on the Turtle WoW case describes the lawsuit and its eventual resolution.

In April 2026, Blizzard and the defendants notified the court that they had reached a settlement. A permanent injunction was entered, requiring the project to shut down. The settlement terms were not publicly disclosed. Turtle WoW’s official servers subsequently went offline on May 15, 2026.

  • Incredibly detailed, highly decorated 1:12 scale posed figures based on the global phenomenon WORLD OF WARCRAFT game
  • Dwarf Hunter: Beast Master & Marksman includes 1 alternate head, 2 weapons, 2 interchangeable armor pieces, 1 animal companion, and environmental base
  • Pandaren: Monk & Rogue includes 1 alternate head, 2 weapons, 1 staff, 2 interchangeable armor pieces, and environmental base
  • Also includes a mystery weapon
  • Collect all McFARLANE TOYS World of Warcraft figures

This was not a trial verdict finding the defendants liable on every allegation. The precise description is that Blizzard obtained permanent injunctive relief and the parties resolved the remaining dispute through a confidential settlement.

What did Blizzard accuse Turtle WoW of doing?

Blizzard’s case was based on the claim that Turtle WoW used Blizzard-owned software and intellectual property to operate an unauthorized alternative World of Warcraft service. The allegations reportedly covered:

  • Use or distribution of unauthorized copies of World of Warcraft software.
  • Use of Blizzard-owned characters, assets, branding and other copyrighted material.
  • Operation of a modified server outside Blizzard’s official services.
  • Unauthorized modification of Blizzard software and alleged circumvention of technical protections.
  • Collection of donations or other payments connected with access to the project.

These points describe Blizzard’s legal theories and allegations. Because the case ended in settlement and injunctive relief rather than a public trial, they should not be presented as findings from a merits verdict.

The June 2026 lawsuit was against Project Ascension

The newer lawsuit that drew attention in June 2026 involved Project Ascension, not Turtle WoW. Blizzard filed that complaint in California on June 12, 2026.

Project Ascension is a separate private server project known for a classless World of Warcraft-inspired system in which players can combine abilities associated with different classes. According to reporting on Blizzard’s complaint, the company alleges that Project Ascension:

  • Distributed millions of unauthorized copies of WoW software.
  • Used Blizzard’s copyrighted material and trademarks.
  • Operated a commercial enterprise around an unauthorized game service.
  • Collected millions of dollars through a system called “Donation Points.”
  • Used shell companies and overseas hosting infrastructure.
  • Caused lost revenue and other harm to Blizzard’s intellectual property.

Blizzard’s complaint reportedly cited a claim that Project Ascension had more than one million players. That figure should be treated as a claim associated with the project or the complaint, not as an independently audited active-player count. Likewise, claims about revenue, infrastructure or corporate arrangements remain allegations unless established by later court findings.

GameSpot’s report on the Project Ascension lawsuit summarizes Blizzard’s allegations. Aftermath’s coverage discusses the complaint, Project Ascension’s business model and the project’s classless design.

What legal claims are in the Project Ascension case?

Publicly discussed summaries of the complaint describe nine civil counts:

  1. Copyright infringement.
  2. Inducement to infringe copyrights.
  3. Contributory copyright infringement.
  4. Vicarious copyright infringement.
  5. Violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
  6. Intentional interference with contractual relations.
  7. False designation of origin.
  8. Participation in a RICO enterprise.
  9. RICO conspiracy.

The terms “RICO,” “racketeering” and “conspiracy” refer to claims Blizzard pleaded in a civil complaint. They do not mean that a court has found Project Ascension or its operators liable, and they are not criminal convictions.

On June 29, 2026, Blizzard filed summons requests seeking to move the Project Ascension case forward. The reported summons warned that defendants would generally have 21 days after service to answer or file a motion, with a failure to respond potentially exposing them to a default judgment. That deadline and warning are procedural; they do not decide the merits of the case.

As of the latest publicly documented update available for this article, no final judgment, settlement or dismissal in the Project Ascension case had been established. It therefore remains an active lawsuit, with service and related proceedings underway. Massively Overpowered reported on the summons requests.

How the two cases are connected—and how they are not

The Turtle WoW and Project Ascension cases are separate lawsuits involving different defendants and different procedural histories:

Issue Turtle WoW Project Ascension
Case filed August 2025 June 12, 2026
Status Settlement and permanent injunction Active lawsuit as of the latest documented update
Outcome or current position Official servers shut down May 15, 2026 No established final judgment or settlement
Legal significance Practical shutdown, not a reported trial verdict Blizzard’s allegations remain unproven claims

The cases are connected by Blizzard’s broader enforcement effort against unauthorized World of Warcraft servers. Reporting also described legal pressure or operational changes involving other projects, including Stormforge and Project Epoch. However, Turtle WoW’s settlement did not legally decide the Project Ascension case, and neither case establishes that every private server will automatically be shut down.

What does this mean for other WoW private servers?

The lawsuits increase the legal and operational risk for private-server operators, but they do not guarantee that every remaining server will disappear immediately. The practical outcome can depend on where operators, hosting providers and payment processors are located; whether defendants can be identified and served; whether a project accepts a settlement; how closely the service uses Blizzard software and assets; and whether a court grants emergency or permanent injunctive relief.

A cease-and-desist letter is also not the same as a filed lawsuit. Some projects may receive legal demands or pressure without becoming defendants in federal litigation. Conversely, a server can remain online after a lawsuit is filed and close later.

Turtle WoW developers reportedly asked Blizzard in October 2025 to consider a licensing framework for fan-run servers. That request reflects an unresolved tension: private-server communities argue that fan projects can preserve older experiences or experiment with content Blizzard does not offer, while Blizzard argues that unauthorized services use its software, intellectual property and trademarks and may divert revenue. Blizzard has not been confirmed to have agreed to create such a licensing program.

What players should know

Turtle WoW players lost access to the official service when its servers shut down. The available reporting does not establish a player-compensation or migration program. Accounts, characters, items, progression, donations and virtual balances tied to the project should therefore be treated as unavailable unless the operators separately announced another arrangement.

Players considering another private server should account for several risks:

  • Continuity: A server can disappear with little notice, taking characters and progression with it.
  • Financial exposure: Payments called “donations,” subscriptions, points or purchases may not receive the protections associated with an official game service.
  • Support: Operators may be outside the player’s country and may not provide durable customer support or refunds.
  • Security: Unofficial clients and launchers should be downloaded only with extreme caution. Malware and account-security risks are separate from the copyright dispute.
  • Geographic uncertainty: Hosting, payment processing and operators may be spread across different jurisdictions.
  • Brand confusion: A new project may reuse familiar names or branding without being operated by the original team.

Project Ascension’s official site is ascension.gg, but its status as a defendant in an active Blizzard lawsuit makes it a poor choice for anyone seeking low legal or continuity risk. It should not be treated as a stable alternative merely because its service remains accessible.

Is Blizzard preparing an official Classic+ game?

There is no confirmed Classic+ announcement established by the sources used for this article. The private-server crackdown has encouraged speculation because projects such as Turtle WoW offer custom content that some players want from an official game. That speculation is not evidence that Blizzard is preparing or has approved a Classic+ product.

Players who want a legitimate older-era WoW experience can review Blizzard’s official World of Warcraft information and news pages at worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com. Blizzard’s official Classic offerings may provide a more secure and supported classic-era experience, but they are not equivalent to Turtle WoW’s fan-made expansions or Project Ascension’s classless mechanics.

The bottom line on the Turtle WoW lawsuit

Blizzard did sue Turtle WoW, but that case began in August 2025 and ended in 2026 with a confidential settlement, permanent injunctive relief and the shutdown of Turtle WoW’s official servers on May 15. The lawsuit filed in June 2026 was a separate action against Project Ascension. That case was still active in the latest documented update, and Blizzard’s claims—including the copyright, DMCA and RICO-related allegations—should not be confused with findings already made by a court.
