In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Block lets you defend with a weapon or shield, but it reduces damage rather than stopping every hit. Shields block most effectively; ranged physical attacks and spell projectiles can be mitigated, while other magic passes through. Blocking is also much less effective when your Stamina is depleted.
What does Block do?
Block is a combat skill that governs your ability to defend against attacks with shields or weapons, according to Bethesda’s leveling guide. It is damage mitigation, not complete protection: a successful block does not guarantee that you will take no damage.
Bethesda’s Remastered blocking guidance says blocking is far less effective when you are out of Stamina. If your defense suddenly feels weak, check your Stamina rather than assuming the attack type cannot be blocked.
Can you block without a shield?
Yes. Bethesda says you can block with all weapons, though a shield is the most effective blocking option. The official Remastered guidance does not give comparative damage-reduction percentages, so there is no verified numeric measure of how much better a shield is.

What is not confirmed for the Remastered?
Bethesda’s available Remastered guidance does not specify Block damage-reduction percentages, skill progression thresholds, or a mastery-perk table. The original Oblivion PC manual describes older mechanics, including that shields are more effective than weapons and that two-handed weapons cannot be used with a shield; those details should not be treated as confirmed Remastered rules without current Remastered-specific documentation.
