If Blue Prince crashes on startup, during loading, or after a few minutes, use these fixes in order: restart Steam and Windows, verify the Steam installation, update or roll back your graphics driver, disable overlays, remove mods, lower graphics settings, reset configuration safely, then investigate hardware if the whole PC reboots. The right fix depends on whether the game closes to the desktop, freezes, shows a black screen, or takes down Windows.
Find your crash pattern first
| Symptom | Start with |
|---|---|
| Play is clicked but nothing happens | Restart Steam, remove launch options, verify files, update Windows and the GPU driver |
| Logos appear, then the game closes | Disable overlays, remove mods or injectors, verify files, reset configuration |
| Black screen or frozen loading | Verify files, try borderless or windowed mode, lower resolution and quality |
| Only one save crashes | Back up saves, test a new game, and do not overwrite the original save |
| Crash after several minutes | Check drivers, overlays, temperatures, memory pressure and graphics settings |
| PC reboots, powers off or blue-screens | Stop repeated game tests and investigate drivers, cooling, RAM, power and overclocks |
Before changing anything
Check the published PC baseline
The Steam listing specifies Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), an Intel i5-2300 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 processor, 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580, DirectX 11 and 6 GB of available storage: Steam store listing. These are minimum compatibility requirements, not a promise that every qualifying system will be stable. Leave more than 6 GB free, use the dedicated GPU on a laptop, and be cautious with Insider Windows builds, external GPUs and overclocked systems.
Protect saves
Before renaming folders, reinstalling, or testing a potentially affected save, make a separate backup of your save and configuration data. Do not assume that Steam Cloud will preserve the version you want; read any conflict dialog before choosing a local or cloud file.
1. Restart Steam and Windows
Fully close the client through Steam > Exit, not just the window’s X, then restart Windows and launch the game before changing anything else. This clears a stuck Steam process, pending client state, or temporary driver problem. If the crash returns immediately, continue to file verification rather than repeatedly rebooting.

2. Verify the Blue Prince installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Blue Prince and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check and any download to finish, restart Steam, and test.
Steam may redownload damaged or missing files. If it reports that all files are valid, the cause may be a driver, overlay, configuration file or hardware issue. Verification does not necessarily remove manually added DLLs or other files outside the normal manifest. Older Steam documentation may call this option “Verify integrity of game cache” or place it under “Local Files.” General first-party PC guidance also recommends validation for crashes and black screens: Square Enix troubleshooting guidance.
3. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and the current stable driver for your NVIDIA, AMD or Intel GPU, then restart. On a laptop, plug in power and select the high-performance or dedicated GPU in Windows Graphics settings or the manufacturer’s control panel; do not switch GPU modes while the game is running.
If crashes began immediately after a driver update, test a rollback to the previous stable driver instead of repeatedly installing newer preview releases. These are general compatibility measures, not confirmed Blue Prince-specific cures.

4. Disable overlays and monitoring tools
Temporarily turn off one group at a time so you can identify a conflict. Test with:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD Software overlay
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- OBS hooks, capture tools and performance monitors
- RGB, hardware-control and screen-filter utilities
Re-enable tools individually after the game is stable. Player reports have described interactions involving Steam, NVIDIA and Discord, but those reports are anecdotal rather than a confirmed universal bug: community report.
5. Remove mods, widescreen fixes and custom DLLs
Move or remove unofficial Blue Prince files, including widescreen or resolution patches, ReShade, texture replacements, injectors and manually copied DLLs. Restore the game folder to an unmodified state, run Steam verification again, and test before reinstalling any modification. Do not delete the entire folder indiscriminately, and keep saves outside it.

A player report links a startup crash to a widescreen modification and notes that verification alone did not solve it; this is a troubleshooting lead, not an official diagnosis: community report.
6. Reset graphics settings
If you can reach the menu, select a lower resolution and quality preset, then try borderless or windowed mode. Remove every existing Steam launch option before testing. Disable unusual third-party frame-generation or post-processing tools.
The Steam page lists DirectX 11 as a requirement, but that does not prove that forcing -dx11, -dx12 or another undocumented renderer flag is supported or helpful. Treat such commands as unsupported experiments, not guaranteed fixes.

7. Rebuild configuration or cache safely
- Close Blue Prince and exit Steam.
- Back up saves and configuration data.
- Use Windows Search for “Blue Prince” inside your user profile to locate the relevant configuration folder; possible locations include
%LOCALAPPDATA%,%APPDATA%, Steam userdata, or the installation directory. - Rename the suspected settings or cache folder, rather than deleting it.
- Relaunch the game and let it create fresh settings.
- Test before restoring old configuration files.
Do not rely on an unverified folder path or assume that renaming a folder preserves saves. Keep the backup until the game and the affected saves have been tested.

When the whole PC fails
A desktop crash is different from a reboot, power loss, complete freeze or blue screen. Return CPU and GPU overclocks or undervolts to stock settings, monitor temperatures while reproducing the issue, test another demanding 3D game, and run Windows Memory Diagnostic or a trusted memory test. Review Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer after the failure. A sudden power loss also warrants checks of PSU capacity, cabling and hardware stability. Do not assume the game is damaging the PC.
When only one save fails
- Back up the original saves.
- Start a new game.
- If the new game works, treat the problem as potentially save-specific or tied to a particular game state.
- Do not overwrite or delete the affected save.
- Check Steam Cloud conflict prompts carefully before choosing a version.
What to send support
Record the exact symptom and point of failure; Windows version; GPU model and driver; CPU and RAM; Steam version; installed mods, overlays and launch options; whether verification replaced files; whether a new game works; the approximate crash time; and any error, Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer or crash-report text. Start with Steam’s technical-support route for the game: Steam Blue Prince technical support. The official site links to Dogubomb’s current community channels: Blue Prince official site.

Should you reinstall?
Reinstalling is a last resort after backups and file verification. It may leave user configuration behind, may not remove injected DLLs or mods, and cannot correct a bad driver, overheating or unstable hardware. Confirm your save protection and Steam Cloud state first. Never download “DLL fixers,” registry cleaners, random executables or paid driver-updater utilities for this problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can verifying Steam files delete my save?
File verification normally checks the installed game manifest, but back up saves first because saves and cloud synchronization are separate from that check.
Should I use -dx11 or -dx12 launch options?
No command is established here as an official Blue Prince crash fix. Remove existing launch options and use the game’s own display settings first.
Do I need to reinstall Blue Prince immediately?
No. Verify files, remove modifications, test without overlays, and protect saves before considering a reinstall.
