Borderlands 4 is already out. It launched on September 12, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, then arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025. The game takes place on Kairos, where four new Vault Hunters enter a conflict against the planet’s controlling regime.
When did Borderlands 4 come out?
The final release date for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC was September 12, 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 version followed on October 3, 2025. PC availability includes Steam and the Epic Games Store. 2K had previously announced September 23, 2025, before moving the date forward; September 12 was the launch date.

What is Borderlands 4 about?
The story unfolds on Kairos, a planet the Timekeeper has kept hidden and under control. Cybernetic implants called Bolts help enforce that control, while the Timekeeper’s synthetic soldiers are known as the Order. The arrival of a rogue moon shatters Kairos’s protective veil and accelerates unrest. The player joins the upheaval as one of four Vault Hunters.

Borderlands 4 is a first-person looter-shooter built around combat, weapon collection, character abilities, exploration, and solo or cooperative play. 2K’s phrase “billions of wild and deadly weapons” is promotional copy, not a verified weapon count.
Who are the four launch Vault Hunters?

- Vex: A Siren who channels supernatural phase energy and can summon deadly minions. Her spectral feline familiar is named Trouble.
- Rafa: A former Tediore trooper whose experimental exo-suit can digistruct weapons.
- Harlowe and Amon: Both are named as launch Vault Hunters, but the cited deep dive does not provide comparable descriptions of their abilities or play styles.

How do the abilities, weapons, and world work?
Each Vault Hunter has three Action Skills to choose from, alongside branching passive skill trees, augments, capstones, and character-specific Traits. The game adds gliding, dashing, double-jumping, and point-grappling to movement. Kairos is presented as a connected world with regions, factions, quests, dynamic events, hidden treasures, and a summonable Digirunner.

Gearbox names eight weapon manufacturers: Order, Ripper, Daedalus, Tediore, Maliwan, Jakobs, Vladof, and Torgue. Its Licensed Parts system allows weapons to combine behaviors from multiple manufacturers. Other gear systems include Ordnance, Enhancements, and Repkits. What co-op options and online requirements are there?
Gearbox describes two-player split-screen, online drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to four players, and crossplay at launch. The co-op features also include instanced loot, dynamic level scaling, individual difficulty settings, and fast travel to other players.

The Bounty Pack Bundle and Story Packs were also announced as separate purchases requiring the base game. For a current price or exact present-day contents, check the platform or publisher store listing rather than relying on the launch announcement. The official FAQ says the Standard Edition is physical on consoles and digital across supported platforms.
A separate ECHO-4 physical bundle includes an ECHO-4 statue, Vault Symbol necklace, Kairos map, four double-sided lithographs, and a SHiFT code. The game is not included in that merchandise bundle.
What has been announced for post-launch play?
2K’s 2025 roadmap described Bounty Packs, Story Packs, free seasonal mini-events, Invincible Bosses, weekly challenges, and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. The announced Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode has five unlockable difficulty levels, with progression based on curated challenges rather than replaying the entire campaign for each rank. That roadmap records the original plan; subsequent releases may differ.
Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
2K announced this first Story Pack for March 26, 2026. Its announced additions include playable Vault Hunter C4SH, Ellie, the Whispering Glacier region, missions, activities, bosses, and gear.
