Borderlands 4 has eight named weapon manufacturers: Daedalus, Jakobs, Order, Ripper, Vladof, Torgue, Maliwan and Tediore. Hyperion does not return as a full weapon manufacturer. Gearbox’s reported explanation combines a change in weapon feel with the way the story has shifted since Handsome Jack’s fall. Licensed parts and individual returning guns still bring some legacy brands and equipment into the mix, so “missing” does not always mean entirely absent.
Which manufacturers are in Borderlands 4?
2K describes Borderlands 4 as featuring eight new and returning weapon manufacturers. The roster named in the Epic Games Store interview with Gearbox staff is:
- Daedalus
- Jakobs
- Order
- Ripper
- Vladof
- Torgue
- Maliwan
- Tediore
The roster is not simply a list of brands attached to weapons made entirely from one manufacturer’s parts. Borderlands 4’s Licensed Parts system can combine manufacturer behaviors and components on a single gun. Gearbox art director Adam May told Epic Games Store that this modular approach contributes to a developer-reported total of more than 30 billion possible guns; that is a reported scale estimate, not an independently audited count. Epic Games Store’s interview and 2K’s announcement describe the roster and system.
Why isn’t Hyperion a full manufacturer?
GameSpot reported on September 10, 2025, that Gearbox creative associate director Grant Kao gave both a gameplay and a story reason for Hyperion not returning fully as a weapon manufacturer. The mechanical issue was Hyperion’s familiar accuracy pattern: its weapons started inaccurate and became very accurate with sustained fire. Kao said the behavior did not feel good in Borderlands gameplay. GameSpot’s report quotes him: “Part of the reason why the Hyperion manufacturer does not fully return … is because the behavior that was connected with the Hyperion manufacturer was that you would start very inaccurate,”

The report also gives a narrative rationale. After Handsome Jack’s fall, Hyperion no longer made sense as the dominant manufacturer it had been, leaving room for Maliwan and the plot-relevant Order. The explanation is specific to Hyperion; it should not be treated as a confirmed account of why every legacy brand that is absent from the named roster was omitted.
Does a missing manufacturer mean its parts and weapons are gone?
No. A manufacturer’s absence from the full roster is different from its parts or individual weapons appearing in the loot pool. Licensed Parts let a weapon combine elements associated with multiple brands. The Epic Games Store interview gives the example of a Daedalus underbarrel on a Maliwan shotgun, illustrating how manufacturer identity can persist in a mixed build rather than as a whole-brand gun.
Official update notes provide further examples of legacy elements in current loot. Borderlands 4 version 1.6 notes describe a Daedalus pistol with a better chance of an Atlas underbarrel and a COV magazine. In February 2026 notes, Gearbox also identified the Laser Disker as a Tediore Assault Rifle returning from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!. These examples show that a legacy part or returning item does not by itself add its maker to the named manufacturer roster.

Are the omitted manufacturers really “fan favorites”?
“Fan favorite” is a useful way to describe why players may ask about familiar brands, but the available sources do not establish which absent manufacturer is most missed. There is no representative poll or other preference statistic here that supports ranking fans’ attachment to Hyperion or any other omitted brand. Hyperion is the one legacy manufacturer for which the cited coverage reports a specific developer explanation; that does not prove it is universally the most popular or most missed.

The practical distinction is between the named roster, the parts that can be licensed onto guns, and individual items that return from earlier games. Borderlands 4 has eight named manufacturers; Hyperion is reported not to return in full, while licensed components and returning weapons can still carry legacy identities. The result preserves recognizable weapon variety without requiring every earlier manufacturer to operate as a complete brand in the new game.
