Bradley Cooper is set to play Duke in a new live-action G.I. Joe film directed and co-written by Danny McBride. Paramount has separated the project from the previously planned Transformers crossover, which is no longer in development. The film is a new reimagining, not a continuation of the earlier movies.
Is Bradley Cooper playing Duke in the new G.I. Joe movie?
Yes. Cooper is set to portray Duke, whom Variety describes as a field commander. The casting was reported October 1–2, 2026. This is a new screen portrayal: Paramount’s catalog identifies Channing Tatum as Duke in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Paramount’s film listing provides that earlier credit.
Who is making the film?
Danny McBride will direct and co-write the screenplay with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri. Hasbro confirmed McBride’s director and screenwriter attachment in its July 16, 2026 announcement. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and Zev Foreman are producing for Hasbro Entertainment.
Is it still a Transformers crossover?
No. Paramount has confirmed the new G.I. Joe film is uncoupled from Transformers; TheWrap reports the earlier crossover plan is no longer in development. Cooper has joined the standalone reimagining, not that crossover project. The film should not be described as a continuation of The Rise of Cobra or the earlier live-action continuity.

What is the story about?
The reported premise places Duke and a group of other Joes in Springfield, a town secretly controlled by Cobra in the comics. McBride described the setting and setup before Cooper’s casting was announced, so this is an early story description rather than a complete official synopsis. TheWrap quoted McBride saying, “You’re following Duke and a group of other Joes. There’s that town in the comics, Springfield, which is a town that’s secretly all Cobra. That is where our film takes place.”
McBride has characterized the movie’s tone as suspense and action rather than comedy. In a July 2026 interview reported by GamesRadar+, he said, “It’s not a comedy; it’s like kind of suspense and action.” Those comments also predate the casting announcement.
