Brian Fargo’s Robot Cache: What IRON Was and What Happened to the Store

Robot Cache launched globally in 2023 with a pitch for resalable digital game licenses and IRON store credit. Here is what the credit was—and what is known about the reported closure.

Robot Cache, the PC game store associated with veteran game developer Brian Fargo, proposed resalable digital game licenses and an in-store credit called IRON. The platform eventually launched globally on July 6, 2023, but IRON was not a cryptocurrency users could trade on exchanges or withdraw. In April 2026, PC Gamer reported that the store was set to close, based on a purported customer email; the exact final access date has not been independently confirmed.

What Robot Cache proposed

Robot Cache aimed to be an alternative PC game storefront. Its central pitch was that a player who no longer wanted a game could list its digital license for resale. If another customer bought it, the seller would give up access to the license in return for a partial refund or store credit, subject to the game’s terms and publisher restrictions. The company described this as a way to give digital games a resale path more like physical games.

At launch, Robot Cache also promoted a 95% share of game-sale proceeds for publishers and developers. That was the company’s promotional claim, not an independently verified figure for actual payouts. The model combined standard digital distribution with conditional license resale and company-issued credit; it did not mean every game could be resold on identical terms.

What IRON was—and was not

Robot Cache proposed awarding IRON to users who opted to let their personal computers validate blockchain transactions. The credit could then be used to buy games on the Robot Cache platform. In its SEC offering circular, the company described IRON as digital in-game store credit and stated a value of $0.01 USD per IRON for that disclosed program.

The same filing explicitly distinguished IRON from an exchange-traded cryptocurrency: “IRON is not an ERC20 or other utility or security token, may not be withdrawn from or traded on the Robot Cache Platform and, unlike a ‘cryptocurrency,’ is not tradable on cryptocurrency or other exchanges.” Robot Cache’s SEC offering circular

So “blockchain currency” was an imprecise shorthand for a platform-bound credit. The stated one-cent value was a historical company-disclosed term, not a current redemption promise; the store was later reported to be closing.

How the proposed resale system worked

A buyer’s ability to list a game depended on how it had been acquired and on publisher restrictions. Robot Cache’s SEC disclosures describe resale and store-credit terms as conditional, rather than a blanket right to transfer any digital purchase.

  • Seller lists a license: A user who no longer wanted a qualifying game could offer its license for resale.
  • Buyer acquires it: If another user bought the listing, the original holder relinquished the license and could receive a partial refund or store credit under the applicable terms.
  • Publisher and purchase rules apply: Not every game or purchase necessarily qualified, and the filing does not support treating resale as unrestricted.

Robot Cache’s timeline and reported closure

Date What the available record says
May 2020 An earlier SEC filing said the platform had been completed and was operating in open beta. SEC offering circular
July 6, 2023 A later SEC filing gives this as the date Robot Cache launched globally, after earlier regional launches. SEC filing
November 2024 The company later disclosed that it formally dissolved and liquidated its Robot Cache S.L. subsidiary in November 2024. SEC filing on the company’s strategy and corporate changes
March 18, 2025 The same filing says the company’s name change from Robot Cache US Inc. to Cloudhands, Inc. took effect on this date. It also describes a 2024 shift away from the PC game platform toward an AI-focused business. SEC filing on the company’s strategy and corporate changes
April 2026 PC Gamer reported a purported customer email saying the store would close in 30 days, purchasing was already disabled, downloaded games would become inaccessible, and unused IRON would expire. The report relied on a user-shared email, so it does not establish the exact final access date or how balances were ultimately handled. PC Gamer’s report

What the closure report means for players

The reported email described loss of access to games even if they had already been downloaded. That is a significant distinction from merely disabling new purchases: a downloaded installer or game file does not necessarily preserve the right or technical ability to play if access depends on the storefront. However, the available report is secondary and based on a purported customer email; it is not enough to establish the final shutdown date, account-by-account outcomes, or whether any user could retain access afterward.

Because IRON was described as platform-only credit rather than exchangeable cryptocurrency, its stated value was tied to use within Robot Cache. The reported closure raises a practical concern for any unused balance, but the final handling of those balances is not established by the report alone.

Why the original headline needs updating

The original launch framing was future-looking, but Robot Cache did launch globally in 2023. Its distinctive pitch was not simply “a blockchain currency”: it was a PC storefront proposing conditional resale of digital game licenses alongside IRON credits for purchases and rewards. Later company disclosures describe a move away from the game platform, and the 2026 closure account remains a reported customer-email claim rather than definitive official confirmation of a last-access date.
