Brookhaven is a hospital in West South Vale, a district of the fictional town of Silent Hill. In SILENT HILL 2, James Sunderland enters the hospital during his search for Mary. The building’s rooms, records, and encounters make it more than a backdrop: it is a place where the game’s medical imagery and uneasy account of its characters meet.

The hospital appears in both the 2001 original and the 2024 remake. PlayStation’s coverage of the remake describes James’s confrontation with the creature Flesh Lip inside Brookhaven and compares the sequence with the original game. What is the hospital’s fictional history?
The Silent Hill Historical Society’s in-universe account says Brookhaven began in the 1700s as an infectious-disease hospital during an epidemic, then later shifted toward psychiatric care. It describes a three-story expansion during the Civil War period and pools and gardens added in the 1950s. That account also says the hospital became the subject of rumors and accusations of unethical treatment. A physician’s diary in its archives, by contrast, suggests a more sympathetic interest in the patients. The contrast gives the location a troubled history without reducing every record or character to a single explanation.
Why are there patient notes, and what do they mean?
Patient records help make Brookhaven feel like a working institution with a past, while their unsettling details contribute to the game’s sense of dread. They invite players to connect the hospital’s history with the people James encounters and with his own search for Mary.
It is reasonable to read the records and hospital setting as part of the game’s psychological storytelling, but the cited in-universe history does not establish a definitive explanation tying every note to Mary’s illness or to James’s mental state. Treat specific connections as interpretation rather than confirmed plot fact.
Is Brookhaven Hospital a real place?
The Brookhaven Hospital in SILENT HILL 2 is fictional. Real institutions share similar names, but they are separate from the game location and their histories or services should not be attributed to it.
