bsnes is a standalone emulator for Super Nintendo and Super Famicom games. It is not simply a launcher for higan or a RetroArch core: the modern project was revived by forking higan, removing its other system emulators, and developing a focused SNES application. It retains much of the lineage’s accuracy-oriented emulation while offering its own interface and features.

What is bsnes?

bsnes is a multi-platform, open-source emulator for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Super Famicom. The project is distributed under the GPLv3 and describes its goals as performance, features, ease of use, and accurate hardware emulation. It is a complete application with its own game loading, input configuration, video and audio settings, save management, cheats, and other tools—not an application that requires RetroArch.

The name can be confusing because bsnes has changed scope over time. In current usage, “standalone bsnes” means the focused SNES emulator; it does not mean that the project has no historical or code relationship to higan.

How bsnes and higan are related

bsnes began in 2004 as an effort to improve SNES emulation accuracy. As the project expanded to emulate additional systems, it was renamed higan in 2012. In 2018, bsnes was revived as a fork of higan. The revived project removed the non-SNES system emulators, rebuilt the interface around SNES use, and added performance and usability features. The standalone release became public in February 2019. The project’s history describes this progression.

Today, higan remains a broader multi-system emulator, while bsnes concentrates on SNES and Super Famicom. So “bsnes uses the higan SNES core” is an imprecise shorthand: it is more accurate to say that current bsnes is a standalone SNES project forked from higan and descended from its SNES emulation technology.

Other names refer to distinct projects or packaging choices. A libretro bsnes core runs inside a frontend such as RetroArch. bsnes-mercury is a separate fork/core family, and bsnes-HD is a specialized branch associated with HD Mode 7 and widescreen-related enhancements. Their options and behavior should not be assumed to match current standalone bsnes.

Current release: stable tag versus nightly

As of August 18, 2026, the project’s GitHub Releases page identifies v115 as its latest tagged release. It also lists an automated bsnes nightly dated May 23, 2026 as a prerelease. For most users, the tagged release is the more conservative choice. A nightly may include newer fixes or features, but it is an automated prerelease and may be less tested. Check the release page for changes before choosing; these version details can change.

What bsnes can do

Accuracy and cartridge hardware

The current project lists low-level emulation for SNES coprocessors, including DSP-series chips, ST-01n, and Cx4. It also offers optional high-level emulation for some coprocessors and optional behavior that reproduces flaws found in older emulators. Those options can help with compatibility, but they are not all the same as faithfully emulating the original hardware. The project also lists Super Game Boy support using the SameBoy core, Satellaview and BS Memory-related support, customizable mappings for unusual cartridges and prototypes, and optional higan-style game-folder support.

bsnes is positioned by its maintainers as a high-accuracy emulator, and the project site uses a “100% compatibility” claim. Treat that as a project claim rather than a guarantee backed here by a current, independently verified test suite. Compatibility also depends on what you are trying to run: a commercially released game, homebrew intended for real hardware, and a ROM hack that depends on quirks from another emulator are different cases.

Graphics and display options

Features listed by the project include HD Mode 7, supersampling, OpenGL multi-pass shaders, built-in filters such as HQ2x and snes_ntsc, HiDPI and multi-monitor support, sprite-limit disabling, and deinterlacing. These features do different things: a filter changes the appearance of the rendered image; supersampling renders at a higher internal resolution; HD Mode 7 can enhance certain Mode 7 graphics; and widescreen behavior may require a specialized patch or branch. None of these options automatically makes every SNES game widescreen or turns every scene into high-resolution art.

Input, saves, and convenience

bsnes lists multiple bindings per emulated input, just-in-time input polling, run-ahead, and turbo input. Its convenience features include battery-backed game saves, save states with undo and redo, automatic state saving and resuming, rewind, screenshots, movie recording and playback, and cheat support and searching. The official documentation covers controls, ROM configuration, graphics enhancements, features, and troubleshooting. Exact menu labels and controller behavior can vary by version and platform.

A battery save is the game’s ordinary cartridge-style save data. A save state is a snapshot of the emulator at a particular moment. States are useful for resuming or experimenting, but may stop working after changing the game image, emulator version, or settings, and may not transfer between emulator families. For long-term use, make an in-game save and keep a separate backup of the battery-save data as well as the original game image.

Where to download bsnes

Get the application from the official bsnes GitHub repository or its Releases page. The repository lists standalone nightly builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD. Confirm that the specific package you choose is for your operating system, and prefer the latest tagged release unless you have a reason to try a prerelease nightly. Avoid third-party download pages that repackage the emulator or make unsupported claims about what it includes.

bsnes is the emulator; it does not provide copyrighted game images. Use game dumps you are legally entitled to use, and do not assume that owning a cartridge makes downloading a separate ROM from an unofficial site lawful in your jurisdiction. Requirements for firmware or other support files also vary by feature, build, and emulation mode.

Getting started

  1. Download and unpack the build for your operating system from the official repository or Releases page.
  2. Start bsnes and configure input. Bind a keyboard or controller using the application’s input setup, then check that the buttons respond as expected.
  3. Set up display and audio. Begin with the defaults. Choose scaling, aspect ratio, video output, and audio settings to suit your display and preferences.
  4. Load a legally obtained game image. The project supports standard game ROM files and optionally higan-style game folders. Common SNES file extensions include .sfc and .smc; support for archives and folders can depend on the build.
  5. Make a normal in-game save and verify it works. Check that the save location is writable. Back up battery-save data and the original image separately before relying on save states.
  6. Change advanced settings only when needed. Try per-game configuration or specialized features if a title, patch, controller, or display setup calls for them.

For soft patches, the project lists BPS and IPS support; it also lists 7-Zip decompression support. Support can vary by release, so consult the current documentation if a file does not load. A patch is normally applied to a compatible, unmodified game image; keep a clean copy so you can reapply or troubleshoot the patch.

Advanced cases and compatibility

ROM hacks and accuracy

Accuracy-oriented emulation is not always the most forgiving choice for software built around emulator mistakes. Some unofficial games or ROM hacks may rely on behavior from an inaccurate emulator and fail, behave differently, or require a compatibility option in an accuracy-focused one. That does not imply that ordinary commercial releases have the same problem. If a hack fails, check its own requirements and any per-game compatibility settings before assuming the image is bad.

Special-chip firmware and emulation modes

Special-chip support can involve low-level emulation (LLE) or high-level emulation (HLE). Depending on the chip, mode, and build, firmware files may be relevant; some chips may not have an HLE alternative. Documentation for the separate bsnes-mercury Accuracy libretro core explains its own LLE/HLE distinctions, but those details should not be treated as a definitive guide to every standalone bsnes release. Check the documentation for the exact build you use rather than copying firmware names or setup instructions from a different core.

Super Game Boy and MSU1

Super Game Boy play involves a Super Game Boy cartridge and a Game Boy game, not simply an ordinary SNES ROM. Support and any firmware requirements can differ among standalone bsnes, higan, and libretro cores.

MSU1 is an enhancement feature used by certain games and patches. These setups often depend on a specific arrangement and naming of the game image and supporting files. If a title starts but lacks audio or other data, or reports an error, check that the required files are present together in the expected structure. MSU1 is an advanced per-game setup, not a feature that changes every standard SNES game.

Performance and troubleshooting

There is no useful universal minimum CPU or GPU specification to give without tying it to a particular release, operating system, and configuration. Accuracy-oriented emulation can demand more than lightweight options, and performance depends on the renderer, shaders, scaling, coprocessor mode, run-ahead, and other settings. Start with defaults. If audio crackles or frame pacing is uneven, try disabling shaders or supersampling and reducing run-ahead or other enhancements. A nightly may behave differently from v115.

bsnes compared with alternatives

Option Best fit Main advantage Trade-off
Standalone bsnes A dedicated, accuracy-focused SNES setup Focused application with extensive emulation, save, shader, and enhancement features Can be more demanding and involved than a lightweight emulator
Snes9x Simplicity, broad everyday use, or weaker hardware Mature, familiar, and generally efficient Less focused on maximum hardware accuracy; for many mainstream games, the practical difference may not matter
higan Multi-system preservation and configuration Broader system coverage beyond SNES More complex and not the focused standalone SNES application
RetroArch + a bsnes core People who want one frontend for many systems Unified library, controller profiles, playlists, shaders, and frontend tools Adds a configuration layer; core names, options, and behavior differ from standalone bsnes
Ares People interested in broader multi-system emulation in the same general accuracy-oriented lineage Multi-system scope rather than an SNES-only application Not the same interface or feature set as standalone bsnes

higan’s project repository describes a multi-system emulator that includes systems beyond SNES. Choose it when that breadth or its established workflow is what you need, not because bsnes requires it. Choose RetroArch when frontend integration matters more than having a self-contained emulator interface. Snes9x is a sensible alternative when simplicity or lower hardware demands take priority.

Which emulator should you choose?

Choose standalone bsnes if you want a dedicated SNES/Super Famicom application, care about accurate hardware and special-chip emulation, and want its advanced display, save, and input features. Choose Snes9x if you want a straightforward option or are using lower-powered hardware. Choose RetroArch with a bsnes core if you already use RetroArch and want a unified multi-system library. Choose higan if you need its wider system coverage and preservation-oriented workflow.

For official SNES games, the practical difference between accuracy-focused and lighter emulators may be small in ordinary play. The extra accuracy and configuration options matter most to preservationists, users of special-chip titles, and people investigating unusual behavior—not as a promise that every unofficial patch will work better.
