The 60-second answer
btvid_32.dll belongs to older TV-tuner, PCI video-capture, CCTV, and multimedia software built around Brooktree BT848 or BT878-family hardware. It was commonly installed with a complete capture-card driver and application package.
The safest repair is to identify the program and capture card that requested the file, then reinstall the complete matching package. Do not download a solitary DLL and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
On modern 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application can load a 32-bit DLL, but that does not make its old kernel driver compatible. If the capture hardware requires an obsolete or unsigned driver, restoring the DLL alone will not make the card work.

What is btvid_32.dll?
btvid_32.dll is commonly described as the Bt Video I2C and GPIO API DLL. It is associated with Brooktree BT8x8 video-capture hardware, including BT848 and BT878-family PCI cards. Brooktree’s hardware lineage was later associated with Conexant.
The library may be used by:
- TV-tuner utilities
- Video-capture applications
- CCTV viewing or recording software
- Older multimedia tools
- Manufacturer-specific control panels and plug-ins
The exact parent program cannot be identified from the filename alone. The file was not an inbox Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component.
Legacy packages often installed several related files together, including driver, control-panel, API, and Video-for-Windows components. A missing btvid_32.dll can therefore indicate that the entire package is incomplete.
The publisher is widely associated with RSS – Brooktree Division, but the name alone does not prove that every copy on your computer is genuine. Treat the original installer or complete driver package as the source of truth.

- “The file Btvid_32.dll is missing.”
- “Cannot find Btvid_32.dll.”
- “This application failed to start because Btvid_32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “Error loading btvid_32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load btvid_32.dll.”
These messages are loader errors rather than proof that the named file is the only problem.
For example, Windows may find btvid_32.dll but fail to load one of its dependencies. In that case, “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a related driver, runtime, or legacy system component.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Before replacing anything, find the application that calls btvid_32.dll.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and full message. The title may identify the TV application, capture utility, or installer that failed.
Write down:
- The program name
- The folder shown in any error details
- Whether the error appears during startup or only when capturing video
- Whether the hardware is still installed
Search installed applications
- Press
Windowsand type Installed apps. - Open Installed apps.
- Search for terms related to the old card, TV tuner, capture software, CCTV, Brooktree, BT848, BT878, Conexant, or the card manufacturer.
- Select a likely application and choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Note its installation location and whether Repair is available.
You can also search File Explorer for:
btvid_32.dll
Look first in the application’s own folder or a related driver directory. Do not assume that the correct destination is a Windows system folder.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Also inspect Imaging devices, Other devices, and System devices.
- Look for Brooktree, BT848, BT878, Conexant Fusion, a card manufacturer name, or an unknown multimedia device.
- Right-click a likely device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Set Property to Hardware Ids.
- Record the values before changing drivers.
If the card is not present, the error may come from abandoned software that still launches with Windows. In that situation, removing the unused program is usually safer than rebuilding an obsolete driver stack.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the capture application
Start with the program that displays the error.
Try Windows repair
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected capture application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data while restoring damaged program files. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
Reinstall the application
If Repair is unavailable:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the capture-card manufacturer, the original installation media, or a trusted archive of the original package.
- Install the version intended for the exact hardware.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application.
Do not install a similarly named TV application for a different card. The application, DLLs, firmware, INF files, and kernel driver must match.

If the software predates current Windows versions, the installer may need to run with compatibility settings:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only when appropriate.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then run the installer.
Compatibility mode can help an installer run, but it cannot make an incompatible kernel driver safe or functional.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete capture-card driver package
A standalone btvid_32.dll is rarely enough. The original package may also require a .DRV, .VXD, .SYS, INF, codec, control-panel file, or related API library.
Use the exact card model and the correct operating system package.
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the capture device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device only when you have the correct replacement package ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the complete manufacturer package.
- Restart again.
- Check Device Manager for warning icons.
- Launch the capture application.
If Windows reports that the driver is unsigned, blocked, or incompatible, stop treating the DLL as the main problem. An old BT848 or BT878 driver may not work on Windows 10 or Windows 11 even when its user-mode DLL can be copied successfully.
Manually browsing to a random folder containing btvid_32.dll is not a substitute for installing the driver through its original installer or INF.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a legacy DLL, especially if the file was extracted from old media or an unusual installer.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry associated with the capture application or driver.
- Confirm the original file path and package before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because the application needs it. First verify that it came from the legitimate original package, scan the complete package, and confirm that the hardware and software are expected.
If the file was genuinely removed from a trusted installer, reinstalling the complete package is safer than restoring an isolated copy. Microsoft notes that a restored quarantined file may be detected again.
Fix 5: Confirm the 32-bit architecture
Treat btvid_32.dll as a 32-bit library.
A 32-bit process can load a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 provides compatibility support for many 32-bit applications, but it does not convert an old driver into a modern 64-bit driver.
To check the application architecture:
- Start the affected program, if possible.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Open the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. Those directories have different purposes, and indiscriminate copying can create new conflicts without supplying the driver dependencies the application actually needs.
A 64-bit replacement is not appropriate simply because a catalogue labels a file that way. The legacy package and requesting application point to a 32-bit library.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point, typically COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that btvid_32.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Running this command is therefore normally not a valid repair:
regsvr32 btvid_32.dll
It may produce errors such as:
- The module was loaded but the entry point was not found
- The specified module could not be found
- The file is not compatible with the version of Windows
If the original manufacturer’s installer specifically instructs you to register a component, use the command from that installer’s documentation and the correct 32-bit regsvr32 executable. Otherwise, reinstall the complete package instead.

Fix 7: Check optional Windows features only when the application requires one
Some very old multimedia programs depend on Windows optional components, but enabling features at random will not replace btvid_32.dll.
If the application’s own documentation names a required component:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features.
- Search for the named feature.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application again.
On some Windows versions, you can reach older feature controls through Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
Do not enable legacy features solely because a DLL is missing. The correct capture-card package is still required.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself appears damaged, other applications also fail, or system files are reporting errors. They generally do not recreate a third-party Brooktree DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the capture application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to the capture application and driver package rather than repeating them indefinitely.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful if the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup operation, update, or antivirus action.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
System Restore rolls back system configuration and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It will not make unsupported capture hardware compatible with current Windows, and it may not restore a deleted third-party file if the original installer is absent.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading btvid_32.dll from an unrelated DLL website can introduce several problems:

- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong build for the application
- The wrong architecture
- Missing companion drivers and libraries
- A version mismatch with the capture card
- A file that loads but causes the application to crash
- A copy that does not belong to your hardware at all
There is no current verified official Brooktree or Conexant download page for this exact DLL. Use the original capture-card manufacturer’s support material, installation media, or a trusted archival copy of the complete package. Restore the whole package, not just the named file.
When the correct fix is an older environment
If the application still fails after reinstalling the matching package, check:

- Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application
- The complete loader error
- Whether the card is detected at all
- Whether the driver is blocked because it is obsolete or unsigned
The real incompatibility may be the kernel driver rather than btvid_32.dll. In that case, use the software with the card in an appropriately isolated older Windows environment, or replace the capture hardware with a device that supports current Windows.
Avoid connecting an unsupported legacy system directly to untrusted networks. If the old application is no longer needed and the hardware is gone, uninstall the abandoned software and remove its startup entries instead.
FAQ
Is btvid_32.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a legacy third-party library associated with Brooktree BT848, BT878, and related video-capture software.
Is btvid_32.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A legitimate copy may belong to an old capture-card package, but any copy should be checked against the original installer and scanned by Windows Security.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX?
