A keychain-sized Nintendo Wii appears technically feasible, but the Kawaii project is better understood as an extreme hardware-modding concept than as a finished consumer console. Reported at roughly 60 × 60 × 16 mm, it uses a severely trimmed original Wii motherboard, custom electronics, an external dock, and an aluminum enclosure. It sacrifices Bluetooth, ordinary Wii Remote support, built-in video output, and much of the convenience that makes a standard Wii easy to use.
The short answer
The Kawaii project shows that a genuine Wii—not a Raspberry Pi, PC, or emulator—could fit inside a remarkably small enclosure. The approach is technically plausible because the Wii’s motherboard can be aggressively reduced using an Omega Trim, leaving the essential computing hardware while removing bulky sections and connectors.
That does not make Kawaii a pocketable, plug-and-play Wii. The reported dimensions describe the tiny console core, not a complete playable setup with a screen, controls, battery, power supply, cables, and dock. The project was described as mostly conceptual in the original coverage, and no finished, generally available retail product is established by that report.

What is the Kawaii?
Kawaii is the name of a proposed ultra-small Wii built around a trimmed original motherboard. Its goal is extreme miniaturization rather than a conventional handheld design. Instead of recreating the Wii’s functionality in a new, smaller computer, the project retains genuine Nintendo Wii silicon and reorganizes the surrounding electronics into custom boards and connections.
The reported target size—approximately 60 × 60 × 16 mm—is small enough to justify the “keychain Wii” description for the central enclosure. It should not be read as the size of the complete gaming system. A display, controller, external video connection, dock, and power solution would all remain outside that measurement unless the project documentation says otherwise.
How an original Wii can be reduced so dramatically
The key is to remove the parts of the original console that are useful in a living-room system but unnecessary in a specialized custom build.

The donor board contains the Wii’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, power circuitry, and the connections needed to boot and run software.
- Perform an Omega Trim. Large areas of the board can be removed while preserving the critical circuitry. This is an irreversible and high-risk operation, not a matter of simply cutting along an obvious empty edge.
- Replace bulky original assemblies. Full-size connectors, shielding, optical-drive hardware, and other surrounding sections can be removed, relocated, or bypassed.
- Add custom interconnects and PCBs. Power, video, controller signals, storage, buttons, and status indicators can be routed through project-specific boards.
- Package the result in a heat-spreading enclosure. The proposed aluminum housing provides mechanical protection and forms part of the passive cooling strategy.
A trimmed motherboard can contain buried traces, vias, and power paths near a cut line. A mistake can destroy the donor board or compromise its boot and memory systems. Anyone treating a normal Wii as a donor should therefore regard it as raw material for an expert-level board-rework project, not as a beginner kit.
What remains—and what gets removed
The essential Wii hardware includes the CPU, GPU, system memory, NAND flash storage, power regulation, clocking and signal infrastructure, boot controls, and video and input pathways. These are the parts that allow a real Wii motherboard to start and run software.
The miniaturization works by removing or externalizing less essential features:

- Large sections of the motherboard and shielding
- Bluetooth hardware and normal wireless Wiimote connectivity
- A built-in display
- Conventional active cooling
- Speakers, battery hardware, and charging circuitry unless separately added
That distinction matters. The project does not shrink every part of a retail Wii proportionally. It retains the computing core and rebuilds the supporting system around it.
It is real Wii hardware, not emulation
Kawaii’s significance is that it is based on genuine Wii hardware. It is not a small computer running Dolphin or another Wii emulator. In principle, that gives it the same underlying hardware platform as an original Wii and potentially preserves Wii and GameCube software compatibility more faithfully than an emulation-based alternative.
However, the available report does not establish a complete game-by-game compatibility test. A trimmed board’s firmware, storage implementation, video modification, controller arrangement, and power behavior all matter. “Uses Wii hardware” should not be expanded into “every Wii game works exactly like it does on an unmodified console.”
For context, the earlier Short Stack Wii project reportedly used an original motherboard trimmed to about 62 × 62 mm. It retained the CPU, GPU, RAM, and flash memory while using several custom boards for power, HDMI, NAND storage, controller connections, buttons, and indicators. Short Stack is a separate project, but it demonstrates why Kawaii’s approach is technically credible.
The dock is part of the usable system
Kawaii reportedly routes controller connections and video through a dock. That means the tiny enclosure is not necessarily a self-contained console that can be connected directly to a television or used with a controller on its own.

The exact final dock specification, video standard, resolution behavior, and cable compatibility are not established in the available report, so those details should not be assumed.

The biggest compromise: no Bluetooth
The reported design omits Bluetooth. As a result, it does not provide the standard wireless Wii Remote experience. This is more significant than merely losing a convenience feature: many Wii games depend on pointing, infrared positioning, motion input, or combinations of those controls.
The project reportedly considered using GameCube controllers through GC2Wiimote as a workaround. That may provide a useful way to control some software, but it cannot automatically reproduce every Wii Remote or motion-control function. A game that expects pointer aiming or motion gestures may be impractical even if the underlying Wii hardware boots it successfully.
The distinction is therefore:
- Bootable Wii hardware: the trimmed system can potentially start and run Wii software.
- Usable Wii system: it needs an input path and video output through the dock.
- Full original Wii experience: this is limited by the lack of Bluetooth and the available controller adapters.
Why undervolting and aluminum matter
The Kawaii concept reportedly uses undervolting to make passive cooling possible. Lowering voltage can reduce power consumption and heat output, which is valuable when there is no room for a conventional fan and heatsink.

Undervolting is not free miniaturization. It can reduce operating margin and may introduce instability, boot failures, or crashes under sustained load. Results can vary between individual Wii boards and depend on voltage regulators, chip characteristics, operating conditions, and thermal behavior. The available report does not provide voltage values, frequency settings, thermal limits, or a stability-testing procedure, so those should not be generalized to every donor Wii.
The aluminum enclosure is intended to act as a compact heat spreader. For that to work, heat must move effectively from the relevant components into the case through suitable thermal interfaces. The case also needs adequate electrical insulation, grounding, mechanical clearance, and protection against shorts. A metal shell can spread heat without guaranteeing safe temperatures; it may simply become hot if the internal heat path is poorly designed.

This is not a single-board adapter project. The design depends on a group of custom electronics that may include:

- Video-output circuitry
- Controller breakouts
- Dock and board-to-board interconnects
- NAND or other storage connections
- Boot, reset, and status controls
- Battery management, if a battery-powered version is developed
The original report said the designs were intended to be open-sourced in due time. That historical statement should not be treated as proof that all Kawaii PCB files are currently published or that a complete kit is available.
Why this is much harder than buying a Wii
A normal Wii is a finished consumer product. Kawaii requires destructive board modification, precision soldering, custom PCB fabrication or assembly, mechanical work, power validation, thermal testing, and troubleshooting at the board level.
A responsible build would need to account for:
- Donor-board revision differences
- Accurate cut lines and possible damage to traces or vias
- NAND and boot integrity
- Replacement power-regulator requirements
- Video-modification compatibility
- Controller communication and game-specific input needs
- Thermal contact with the enclosure
- Mechanical tolerances and dock alignment
Typical equipment for this class of work includes a temperature-controlled soldering iron, hot-air rework station, rotary tool, precision knife, tweezers, wire cutters, flux, solder, wire, and suitable measurement equipment. Those tools do not turn the project into a reproducible weekend build.
Related projects put Kawaii in perspective
The Short Stack project is useful evidence that extreme Wii motherboard reduction is a real modding path, but its roughly 62 × 62 mm board and multiple custom PCBs should not be confused with Kawaii’s final design or dimensions.
At the other end of the practicality scale is the G-Boy, a much larger real-hardware Wii portable. Tom’s Hardware reported on the G-Boy kit in 2020, including a historical $325 preorder price for the Rev III. That price is not a current 2026 price, and the G-Boy is not keychain-sized. Its value as a comparison is that it aims to be a self-contained handheld, with the screen, controls, battery, and enclosure that Kawaii leaves external or unresolved.

Can you build one from a normal Wii?
In principle, yes—but not from a simple consumer guide. The donor Wii supplies the core hardware, while the rest of the system requires project-specific trimming, boards, firmware or software configuration, power work, video output, controller integration, and enclosure fabrication.

The irreversible cut is only one risk. A board that survives trimming still has to boot reliably, accept storage, produce a usable video signal, respond to controls, remain stable at its reduced voltage, and transfer heat into the enclosure. Without documentation for the specific Kawaii revision and its supporting electronics, a reader would be attempting an original hardware-development project rather than following a proven kit build.
Can it play Wii games?
It is designed around genuine Wii hardware and may run Wii software if the trimmed system boots correctly. But game compatibility must be qualified:
- Games requiring standard Wiimote motion or pointing may not be practical.
- GameCube-controller-compatible titles are a better fit for a docked controller workaround.
- The available report does not establish universal compatibility.
- Running software is not the same as reproducing every original control scheme.
Is it actually a keychain?
The reported 60 × 60 × 16 mm dimensions support “keychain-sized” as a description of the central enclosure. The complete playable setup is larger because it still needs power, a display, a controller, a dock, and cables. In other words, the console core may fit the keychain metaphor; the gaming experience does not.

The available coverage does not establish a finished commercial Kawaii product, a regular retail release, or an active kit store. An expression of interest for aluminum enclosures reportedly filled quickly and closed, but that demonstrates demand for the enclosures—not ongoing availability of complete units or kits.
Readers should not confuse a historical enclosure interest form, planned open-source files, or community enthusiasm with a shipping product. The more realistic commercial alternative is a larger, documented Wii-portable project or kit. Readers interested in experimenting with Kawaii-like hardware would need a suitable donor console, custom electronics, precision rework tools, and project-specific documentation.

Verdict
A keychain-sized Wii is plausible as an expert hardware project because the original Wii motherboard can be aggressively trimmed and supported by custom PCBs. Kawaii’s reported 60 × 60 × 16 mm target is therefore more than a software-emulation fantasy.
But the tiny size comes from removing the features that make a Wii convenient: Bluetooth, standard wireless controllers, built-in ports, optical-drive hardware, conventional cooling, and standalone usability. With the project described as mostly conceptual and no generally available finished product established, Kawaii should be viewed as an impressive direction in Wii modding—not as a tiny Wii you can simply buy or assemble from ordinary parts.
