Bullet hell makes you survive a screen crowded with enemy projectiles; bullet heaven turns that spectacle around, with your growing attacks mowing through hordes. The difference is less about how many bullets appear than who is filling the screen—and what you must do to stay alive.
Bullet hell vs. bullet heaven: the core difference
In a conventional bullet hell, the danger comes from enemy fire. You read projectile patterns, find openings and move through safe spaces while attacks fill the screen. Epic Games’ developer glossary defines bullet hell as a shooter mode where the screen is often almost completely filled with enemy bullets, also called “curtain fire” (Epic Games’ bullet hell glossary).
Bullet heaven is commonly used for the inverted power fantasy: the player builds and unleashes attacks against large groups of enemies. Rather than primarily threading through enemy fire, you develop an offense capable of overwhelming the horde. The terms describe different dominant roles in projectile-heavy action, not a universal technical standard.
How to tell which kind of game you’re playing
Ask who fills the screen
In bullet hell, the screen-filling threat is generally enemy bullets. In bullet heaven, the player’s expanding attacks often dominate the spectacle as enemies arrive in waves. This is a useful starting point, but not a strict rule for every game.

Notice what demands your attention
Bullet-hell play emphasizes reading patterns and steering into gaps. Bullet-heaven play often emphasizes positioning, surviving waves and developing a stronger attack build. Both can involve dodging and both can feature dense offensive effects; the distinction is which activity defines the main loop.
Use the label as a guide, not a guarantee
These names are descriptive rather than mutually exclusive categories. A game called bullet heaven may still demand careful dodging, while a bullet-hell game can give you a screen full of your own attacks. Check the individual game’s description or gameplay to see what you will actually spend time doing. Genre commentary has also noted that the “heaven” label does not map neatly onto every game’s mechanics (PC Gamer’s discussion of the genre name).

Why Vampire Survivors is a useful example
Vampire Survivors is a clear reference point for bullet heaven: its Steam description urges players to “Mow down thousands of night creatures and survive until dawn!” and says, “Be the bullet hell!” (Vampire Survivors on Steam). The wording captures the reversal: the player’s offense becomes the spectacle that overwhelms the crowd.
The same Steam listing also includes “Bullet Hell” among its user-defined tags. That overlap is a reminder that storefront tags help describe games and connect players with recommendations; they do not impose a single, exclusive genre definition.

What Steam’s Bullet Heaven tag means
In a May 19, 2026 report, GamesRadar said Valve had added a “Bullet Heaven” tag to Steam. The report quotes Valve saying tag changes aim to help players identify games that fit their interests and help Steam generate appropriate recommendations (GamesRadar’s May 2026 report on Steam tags). This is evidence that Steam recognizes the label for storefront categorization; it does not make the tag a universal definition across platforms or settle how every player uses the term.

- Bullet hell: enemy projectiles crowd the screen; your main job is to survive them.
- Bullet heaven: your growing offense crowds the screen; your main job is to build power and overwhelm enemies.
When a game seems to fit both, focus on its dominant loop: are you mainly finding safe paths through incoming fire, or scaling up attacks to clear waves?
