Bungie substantially expanded its Bellevue headquarters, but the studio’s headline promise to bring at least one new intellectual property to market before 2025 was not clearly fulfilled by a Bungie release. Its most visible non-Destiny game, Marathon, belongs to an existing franchise and was delayed beyond 2025; an original-universe project that began at Bungie was introduced as a separate PlayStation Studios team, teamLFG.

What Bungie announced in 2021

The headline refers to a real growth plan Bungie announced on February 18, 2021. The studio said it planned to expand its Bellevue, Washington, headquarters, open an Amsterdam office in 2022, broaden the Destiny universe beyond the core game and bring “at least one new IP to market before 2025.” The wording matters: this was an announced target, not a named game or a guaranteed release date. Bungie’s announcement presented the moves as part of a larger transition from a game studio centered on Destiny toward a broader entertainment company.

The plan followed Bungie’s 2019 separation from Activision, after which Bungie self-published Destiny 2. Expanding beyond one continuing franchise could diversify its development slate, while investment in publishing, media and additional teams could support that ambition. In January 2022, before the 2025 target, Sony Interactive Entertainment agreed to acquire Bungie for $3.6 billion. Sony described Bungie as a multiplatform studio focused on Destiny’s long-term development, expanding its universe and creating new worlds—not as a move to make Destiny exclusive. The acquisition changed Bungie’s ownership and capital structure, but it does not by itself show that every 2021 goal was met. Sony’s acquisition announcement

The Bellevue expansion largely happened

In 2021, Bungie’s existing headquarters covered about 84,000 square feet. The announced plan was to grow it to more than 208,000 square feet, with completion expected in fall 2022. That is more than double the floor area, not proof that Bungie more than doubled its workforce or that every part of the building was continuously occupied.

By December 2022, Bungie described its Bellevue headquarters as reimagined and expanded, with capacity for more than 1,000 people. It also reported a satellite office near Seattle’s waterfront. Those updates make the physical expansion a substantially realized part of the plan. Office capacity, actual headcount and day-to-day occupancy are different measures, particularly where hybrid work is involved. Bungie’s account of its offices and remote work

Amsterdam: an announced plan, not a verified current status

Bungie said it planned to open its first international office in Amsterdam in 2022, with publishing and marketing among the functions associated with its growth strategy. The announcement establishes the plan, but the available evidence here does not independently establish the office’s later operating status, staffing or role after restructuring. It is therefore safer to describe Amsterdam as an announced expansion than to claim that a fully operational office remains active today.

Why Marathon does not settle the new-IP question

Bungie announced Marathon in 2023 as a new game, but it is a new entry in an existing Bungie franchise. The distinction is between a new game and a new intellectual property: a new release can use an established universe, while a new IP introduces a distinct property. Bungie’s Marathon FAQ says the game shares a world with the original trilogy and is neither a remake nor a direct sequel. So calling it a new Bungie IP would be inaccurate, even though it is a new game for modern platforms.

Nor did Bungie’s 2021 announcement name Marathon as the project behind its new-IP target. In April 2025, Bungie set September 23, 2025, as the game’s planned release date. It delayed the launch in June, saying a new date would follow. In December 2025, Bungie announced a March 2026 target and a U.S. price of $39.99. The schedule changed; the franchise did not become new IP. April release-date announcement · June delay update · December 2025 update

An original universe moved into teamLFG

Another part of Bungie’s diversification effort appeared in May 2025, when Sony introduced teamLFG as a new PlayStation Studios team that originated at Bungie. Sony said the Bellevue-based team was developing an action game in a brand-new science-fantasy universe, with staff across the United States and Canada. This is evidence that Bungie incubation work produced an original-universe project, but the project’s transfer into a separate PlayStation studio matters: it is not evidence that Bungie itself released a new IP by the 2025 target. The announcement did not establish the game’s name, release date, platforms or commercial model. Sony’s teamLFG introduction

2021 plan versus later outcome

2021 initiative What the record supports
Bellevue headquarters expansion Substantially realized: Bungie later described an expanded facility with capacity for more than 1,000 people, plus a Seattle satellite office. Capacity is not a headcount figure.
Amsterdam office Announced for 2022; later operating status and current role are not established here.
Expand the Destiny universe A continuing strategic direction rather than a single pass-or-fail deliverable. Destiny 2 remained a central live-service pillar.
At least one new IP before 2025 Not clearly confirmed as fulfilled by a Bungie-released game. Marathon is an existing IP, while an original-universe incubation project became teamLFG, a separate PlayStation Studios team.
Diversify the portfolio Partially visible in the work on Marathon and the teamLFG project, but those developments should not be conflated with shipping a new Bungie-owned IP.

Bungie’s 2025 communications also referred to incubation projects codenamed Frontiers and Apollo. A codename alone does not establish a separate new IP: Apollo was later associated with Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate. Bungie was preparing to operate Destiny and Marathon simultaneously, but that portfolio plan does not change the distinction between a new game and a new property. How to read the headline in retrospect

The 2021 plan was not simply a success or a failure. Its clearest physical commitment—the larger Bellevue headquarters—was substantially delivered. The Amsterdam office was a real announced initiative, but the available record does not establish its later status. The studio’s diversification efforts are visible in Marathon and in an original-universe project that moved into teamLFG. But neither point proves that Bungie brought a new IP to market before 2025: Marathon belongs to an older franchise, and teamLFG was presented as a separate PlayStation Studios team working on a project that had not yet been identified as a release.

For players and industry watchers, the fairest conclusion is that Bungie did grow its physical footprint and broaden its development ambitions, while the most specific creative target remains unconfirmed as a Bungie release by the stated horizon. The 2021 wording was a forward-looking goal; it should not be retroactively turned into a claim that a particular game shipped—or that Marathon was the promised new IP.
