Bungie released Destiny 2’s final live-service content update, Monument of Triumph, on June 9, 2026. The announcement marks the end of planned live-service content updates—not a shutdown of the game or confirmation that the Destiny franchise is over.
What Bungie announced
On May 21, 2026, Bungie said the June 9 release would be Destiny 2’s “final live-service content update.” The studio described the move as the close of active content development for the game and a transition toward a new direction for Bungie. Bungie’s announcement framed the change as an ending for this phase of Destiny 2, not an announcement that the game would be taken offline.
When was the final Destiny 2 update?
The final update arrived June 9, 2026, under the title Monument of Triumph. Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 notes, published that day, document the release and its in-game changes.
Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
No shutdown was announced. Bungie said: “Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today.” That is Bungie’s stated intention; it is not a specified service guarantee or a promise of a particular support period.

Is Bungie done with Destiny?
The end of planned Destiny 2 live-service updates does not establish that Bungie is done with the Destiny franchise. In a September 17, 2026 update, the studio discussed “the future of Destiny and Marathon” and its aim to earn back player trust. The statement is an expression of direction, not confirmation of a new Destiny game or its release date. Bungie’s September update is the clearest later indication that the studio is still addressing Destiny’s future.
What the announcement means for Bungie
Bungie said its focus would turn toward a “new beginning” for the studio and that it would begin incubating future games. That describes a stated shift in focus; the May and September announcements do not identify a newly confirmed project with a launch date.
