The victory puts him in contention for a wildcard place at December’s World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Beijing, but his selection has not been confirmed.
McEvoy breaks the World Cup record in Baku
McEvoy’s 20.22 lowered the previous World Cup record of 20.31, set by Canada’s Josh Liendo in 2025, according to World Aquatics. The official Baku results list Egor Kornev second in 20.26 and Sean Niewold third in 20.82.
This was a short-course race in a 25m pool. The World Cup record is a separate category from McEvoy’s long-course 50m freestyle world record; the two should not be treated as the same mark.
After the race, McEvoy said: “It was good. 11 years since my personal best, so I think I’m due for one.” He added that 20.2 put him “relatively close to that sub-20,” calling the result “a good start to the Tour,” in comments reported by World Aquatics.

Does the Baku win qualify McEvoy for Beijing?
Not by itself. World Aquatics’ wildcard route requires a swimmer to finish in the top three of an individual final and achieve an A standard at one of the three World Cup tour stops. McEvoy’s Baku win satisfies the placing part of that rule, but the available announcements do not confirm that his Beijing entry has been awarded.
Swimming Australia announced 24 swimmers for Beijing after its Sydney trials. McEvoy missed those trials and was not included in the announced squad, so the wildcard route is the basis for his possible selection. Each member federation can enter up to three additional swimmers through this route, under the criteria set out in World Aquatics’ 2026 Silk Road Tour media advisory.

What comes next before the Beijing championships?
The 2026 Silk Road Tour continues in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 8–10 October, then moves to Astana, Kazakhstan, from 15–17 October. The World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) are scheduled for Beijing from 1–6 December 2026.
McEvoy’s Baku result makes him a contender, not a confirmed member of Australia’s Beijing team. The distinction matters: the wildcard rule requires both a top-three individual finish and an A standard, and Swimming Australia’s announced roster did not include him.
