Sometimes—but YouTube’s player adapting to a video’s shape does not guarantee that a 24/7 streaming service will handle a playlist of mixed landscape and portrait clips the way you expect. YouTube can display videos in different aspect ratios. The separate question is what the service does when it combines those videos into one continuous live feed: it might preserve, resize, crop, or pad them, and its documentation may not say which. Check the provider’s behavior or test a short mixed-format playlist before scheduling a long stream.
Why YouTube playback and 24/7 stream handling are different
YouTube Help says its video player automatically adapts to the size of each individual video. The standard computer player is 16:9, but that is a default player shape, not a requirement that every video be 16:9. For some formats, including vertical 9:16 video in a computer browser, YouTube may add padding around the image. YouTube recommends not baking padding or black bars into the encoded video, so the player can size it dynamically.
That describes playback of a video. A 24/7 service has a different job: it selects or loops prerecorded clips and sends a continuous live feed to YouTube. The player’s ability to adapt to each video does not establish whether the service can change the live feed cleanly between clips with different dimensions—or whether it alters those clips first.
What YouTube’s live-format options do—and do not—tell you
YouTube documents a Live Control Room option for simultaneous horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 live formats. In that setup, the default vertical output is a center crop of the horizontal stream. This is a dual-output feature for a live broadcast. It does not explain how an automated playlist of separately encoded landscape and portrait videos is treated by a 24/7 service.

Likewise, YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a continuously active 24/7 broadcast alongside a separate interview broadcast using the same incoming stream. That is information about broadcast and stream resources, not a promise that prerecorded clips of varying aspect ratios will be normalized or switched seamlessly.
What OneStream Live’s published instructions establish
OneStream Live’s Help Center describes a YouTube-only 24/7 mode requiring its Enterprise plan. Its setup lets users select prerecorded videos from a device, OneStream storage, or cloud storage, then schedule a 24/7 stream. The instructions state a maximum duration of 30 days. The help page, last updated September 3, 2026, does not specify whether a mixed-ratio playlist is padded, cropped, resized, or passed through unchanged.

OneStream Live separately recommends source settings of 1920×1080 at 16:9 for landscape and 1080×1920 at 9:16 for portrait. It recommends uploading videos in their original orientation to avoid cropping or distortion. Those source recommendations, in guidance last updated September 8, 2026, do not guarantee how transitions between orientations behave in a 24/7 playlist.
How to check a service before committing to a long stream
- Confirm playlist support. Ask whether the service accepts landscape and portrait clips together in one 24/7 playlist, rather than merely accepting each format separately.
- Ask what happens at each transition. Get a clear answer on whether it preserves each clip, resizes it, crops it, or adds padding. Also ask whether the outgoing live dimensions stay constant or change between clips.
- Check the target live format. Decide whether your intended output is horizontal, vertical, or YouTube’s documented dual-format option. Do not assume dual-format output automatically reformats a prerecorded mixed-ratio playlist.
- Run a short test playlist. Include at least one landscape and one portrait clip, and inspect both the YouTube live output and its playback on the devices your audience is likely to use. Look for cropped subjects, black bars baked into the image, unexpected padding, or disruptive changes at the cut.
- Verify plan and scheduling limits. Confirm the service’s required plan and maximum stream duration before building a schedule around it.
If the provider does not document mixed-ratio behavior, treat the result as unknown until it confirms the behavior or your test demonstrates it. Avoid converting every source to 16:9 solely on the assumption that YouTube requires it; first decide whether a crop or added background would harm the video’s composition.
