Yes—if you’re streaming prerecorded video that has been uploaded to a cloud service. The service stores the video and sends it to YouTube from its own infrastructure, so your home PC can be off after you start and verify the broadcast. If the source is a live camera, gameplay session, or other feed that exists only on your PC, turning off that PC stops the source; a cloud loop service cannot keep capturing it.
How a cloud stream keeps going after your PC shuts down
In a cloud workflow, you upload a recording or playlist, connect the YouTube destination, and start or schedule the broadcast. The provider’s computers then send the video to YouTube. Your PC is needed for setup, but it does not need to remain the encoder once the cloud stream is running.
That differs from running an encoder on your own PC or server. YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. If that encoder and its video source are on your PC, both must keep running for the stream to continue.
What works—and what stops when the PC goes off
- Uploaded recordings and playlists: A cloud service can loop or schedule these while your PC is off, subject to the provider’s plan and service limits.
- Live camera, gameplay, or another PC-only feed: The source disappears when the PC shuts down. To keep it live, the source and encoder must run on another powered device or infrastructure.
- A prerecorded-media hardware setup: YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus and describes its PlayToStream function as a way to schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. This is dedicated on-premises hardware, not a cloud service; check the manufacturer’s current capabilities and supported media before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder directory
Cloud services and other ways to keep a YouTube stream running

Set up a cloud stream safely before turning off your PC
- Check YouTube Live access. If this is your first time streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Complete that step ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Upload the prerecorded source. Choose the recording or build a playlist in the service. Confirm that the uploaded content is the version you intend to broadcast and that the service supports the file and schedule you need.
- Connect the YouTube destination using the service’s encoder workflow. YouTube’s stream key is used by the encoder to send the feed to your channel. YouTube warns, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; do not show it in screenshots or public documents. If it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update the service using the new key. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Start the broadcast and verify it in YouTube Studio. Check that the correct video is playing and that YouTube shows a healthy incoming stream before closing the browser or powering down your PC. YouTube’s live settings include encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls. Lower latency can reduce the delay but may increase playback buffering, so choose it based on the experience you want for viewers. YouTube Help: Live stream settings
- Turn off your PC only after verification. The cloud service, rather than your home computer, must be responsible for the ongoing video and connection to YouTube.
Content and continuity checks
Make sure you have the rights to everything in the stream
Using a cloud service does not change YouTube’s rules for the video. Check that you have permission to use the footage, music, images, and other material in the recording or playlist. Copyright claims or restrictions can affect a broadcast regardless of where its encoder runs.

Do not treat reconnection as a guarantee
A provider may attempt to reconnect if YouTube drops a stream, but that does not establish that every interruption will be invisible or that the stream will never stop. Check the provider’s recovery behavior and monitor the broadcast when continuity matters.
