Can a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Use HEVC (H.265)?

YouTube supports H.265 (HEVC) for 4K/2160p at 60 fps live ingest. Here are its bitrate recommendations, the settings to check, and what changes for HDR.

Yes. YouTube lists H.265 (HEVC) as a supported codec for RTMP/RTMPS live ingest, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and gives specific bitrate guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. For SDR, YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended bitrates are 10 Mbps and 35 Mbps for HEVC or AV1. Those are ingest recommendations—not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can deliver a stable stream.

Recommended 4K/2160p at 60 fps settings for SDR

YouTube’s live encoder settings, checked on October 3, 2026, list H.265 (HEVC) for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its retrieved settings page did not show a publication or revision date, so check YouTube’s current guidance before a broadcast.

Setting Recommended configuration
Video codec H.265 (HEVC)
Resolution and frame rate 4K/2160p at up to 60 fps
Transport RTMPS recommended; RTMP is also listed
Bitrate control CBR (constant bitrate)
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
Scan Progressive
Audio codec AAC or MP3

Use the 4K/2160p at 60 fps bitrate row for the codec you select. YouTube groups AV1 and H.265 together in that row:

Video codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s published encoder guidance, not a promise of acceptable quality at the minimum or proof that a particular setup will hold the rate. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, with capacity for other network use and normal fluctuations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to configure and test the stream

  1. Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use the stream key and server details shown for that event. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with viewers.
  2. Configure your encoder. Choose H.265 (HEVC), 3840 × 2160 resolution, and 60 fps or lower. Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), progressive scan, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
  3. Check the upload connection. Run an upload-speed test and make sure the connection has reliable headroom above the selected video bitrate, including room for audio and network variation. A speed-test result is a snapshot; it does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout the event.
  4. Run a representative test before going live. Include the motion, scene changes, and audio you expect in the actual broadcast. Check the encoder for dropped frames or overload and monitor YouTube’s stream health for ingest warnings.
  5. Confirm the live output. Verify that the stream is receiving video and audio and that the resolution and frame rate are as intended. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes live video into output formats for viewers, so the source codec you send is not necessarily the codec every viewer receives.

What changes for HDR?

Do not apply the ordinary SDR RTMP/RTMPS settings and bitrate table as if they also described HDR transport. YouTube’s separate HDR guidance specifies HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. It also specifies HLS delivery, including TS segments of 1–4 seconds, with additional playlist and HTTPS requirements. Use that dedicated HDR specification and your encoder’s compatible setup instructions for an HDR broadcast.

Latency and encoder choice

YouTube’s settings indicate that 4K/2160p streams do not have the low-latency improvement option and are optimized for quality at normal latency. If low latency is essential, account for that limitation before choosing 4K60.

The encoder can be software or hardware; YouTube does not require one particular computer, capture card, router, or encoder. Its encoder listing includes AWS Elemental MediaLive as an example of a service supporting live video up to 4Kp60 HEVC. That example establishes a supported option, not a requirement to use or purchase it.

Common problems and fixes

  • Unstable stream or dropped frames: The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or another device or process may be using upload capacity. Test the connection under realistic conditions, reduce the bitrate or stream quality if necessary, and retest.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the encoder is sending to the server address and current stream key shown in YouTube Studio, and verify the connection protocol and encoder status.
  • Encoder rejects HEVC or cannot produce 4K60: Codec support and encoding capacity depend on the software or hardware in use. Check that encoder’s documentation and select a supported output mode; YouTube support for HEVC does not mean every encoder can generate it.
  • Keyframe or bitrate warnings: Confirm CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, with 4 seconds as the maximum in YouTube’s guidance. Use the bitrate row for the codec and resolution/frame rate combination you are sending.
  • HDR looks wrong or is not accepted: Check the HDR-specific requirements for 10-bit depth, BT.2020, PQ or HLG, and HLS rather than assuming the SDR ingest configuration applies.
  • Copyright or monetization restrictions: HEVC is only a video encoding format; it does not grant rights to game footage, music, cutscenes, or other material in a broadcast. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for the content you plan to stream.
