Possibly—but there is no universal cost winner. If you already own a Chromebook, have suitable broadband and can monitor it, streaming locally may cost less in cash than renting cloud hosting. But YouTube’s general streaming guidance does not certify a Chromebook for unattended 24/7 operation, and the true comparison depends on power, data limits, reliability and the stream workload.
Can you stream to YouTube from a Chromebook?
YouTube supports computer webcam streams and encoder-based streams. Its general instructions do not certify a specific Chromebook model, confirm that a particular encoder application will run on it, or establish that it can remain streaming unattended for 24 hours. Treat compatibility and stability as things to verify on your own device, not as guaranteed Chromebook capabilities.
A simple webcam stream and a continuous prerecorded-video stream are different jobs. YouTube’s webcam workflow is for a computer with a webcam; encoder workflows support more involved productions. If you want a prerecorded video to play continuously, verify that your chosen workflow can loop it and sustain the stream. Keep the Chromebook awake, connected to power and network, and available for monitoring; sleep, a dropped connection, a reboot or an application failure can interrupt a locally run stream.
What settings and checks matter?
Match bitrate to the upload connection
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for H.264 include 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps at 720p30. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds or evidence that a Chromebook can encode at those settings. Leave connection headroom and test the actual upload connection before relying on it. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and monitoring stream health.

Use a secure stream connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted stream connection. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Use the key only in the intended streaming workflow, and replace it if it is exposed.
Test before leaving it unattended
- Confirm the Chromebook and the chosen webcam or encoder workflow can produce the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to use.
- Run a test stream and check YouTube’s stream-health information for connection or encoding problems.
- Check that power settings, lid behavior, network stability and any required playback loop will not stop the stream.
- Decide how you will notice and recover from an interruption. A locally running stream depends on the device and its connection being available.
Will YouTube archive one continuous 24-hour stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited encoder guidance does not promise a complete archive for one uninterrupted stream lasting longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on a single 24-hour broadcast being saved in full; check YouTube’s current archive handling and plan a separate recording or shorter stream sessions if keeping the complete program matters.

How to compare Chromebook and cloud costs
Compare recurring costs on the same time period and for the same stream workload. An already-owned Chromebook has no new purchase cost, but local streaming can still use electricity and metered or capped internet data. A cloud plan has its own recurring fee and may add storage, transfer or encoding costs. Monitoring and recovery also take time, even when they do not appear as a bill.

The AWS figure is a useful reference point, not a like-for-like result: the information available does not establish that the listed plan can encode a particular resolution, frame rate or codec. Similarly, Google Cloud pricing cannot be reduced to one VM rate without specifying the configuration and usage.

Which approach makes sense?
- Consider local Chromebook streaming if you already have a suitable device, your connection has enough stable upload capacity, the stream is simple, and you can monitor and recover it yourself.
- Consider cloud hosting or a managed service if leaving a device and home connection running is inconvenient, remote operation matters, or you value recovery and reduced hands-on maintenance. Compare the actual workload and service terms rather than assuming all cloud plans are interchangeable.
For prerecorded continuous video, YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies cloud-based 24/7 streaming tools as a category and names Gyre as an example; the cited information does not establish its current price or suitability for your needs.
