But a used office PC that can send a test stream is not automatically reliable enough to run unattended around the clock. Check its exact hardware, test it with the real production setup, and assess operational risks separately before relying on it.
What a used office PC can—and cannot—tell you
A desktop can run OBS Studio and send video to YouTube if its operating system, processor or supported hardware encoder, graphics capability, workload and internet connection are suitable. “Office PC” and the computer’s age alone do not establish that. The OBS Project explicitly cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record.
There are two different questions: can the PC produce a stream under test, and can the whole setup keep an unattended stream running continuously? A representative test can help answer the first. The official guidance cited here does not provide a universal 24/7 reliability guarantee for an unspecified used PC—or a failure-rate statistic for this use.
Check YouTube eligibility before setting up the PC
YouTube requires a channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s eligibility before troubleshooting OBS or buying equipment. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Assess the exact computer and production workload
Identify the hardware and operating system
Record the PC’s make and model, processor, graphics hardware, installed operating system and available encoder. OBS’s Windows requirements list Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, but those are compatibility requirements, not a performance certification. Confirm that the installed OBS release supports the PC’s operating system; requirements can change.
Describe what the church will actually stream
List the camera or cameras, capture device, switcher, overlays, presentation software, graphics, audio sources, resolution and frame rate. A static image with an audio feed is a different workload from several camera inputs, animated graphics and a live presentation. OBS says CPU needs vary with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.

If the PC needs to receive a camera or switcher output, check whether it already has a compatible input path. A separate USB HDMI capture device is only relevant if the church needs one; it is not required for every setup.
Choose an encoder and test its output
When the machine has a supported hardware encoder, try it. OBS says hardware encoding generally moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, which can help performance. However, older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Compare the actual picture rather than assuming that every hardware encoder is better.

OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, but it does not replace a test with the intended scenes and sources. Watch for dropped frames, stuttering, audio problems and signs of sustained system strain while the PC is doing its real work.

These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not measurements of the church’s connection or a guarantee that a given PC can encode smoothly. Choose the output that suits the stream and the hardware; 60 fps is not automatically necessary for a service.
Measure sustained upload capacity at the installation location over the connection the PC will use, preferably at busy times as well as quiet ones. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A nominal speed-test result does not establish that the connection will remain stable. Use wired Ethernet if it improves reliability at the site; YouTube’s guidance emphasizes reliable connectivity, not a universal requirement to use a cable. Run a representative test before depending on it
- Prepare the channel. Confirm verification and live-stream eligibility, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation if needed.
- Configure the actual production. Connect the intended camera or video source, capture hardware, audio, overlays and presentation software. Set the planned resolution, frame rate and encoder.
- Check the connection. Measure upload performance on the intended network and allow the recommended 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Include representative sound and movement rather than testing only a still image if the real service contains motion.
- Inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health, confirm the intended audience can access the event, and review audio and video quality.
- Observe the computer during the test. Look for encoder strain, unexpected restarts, dropped frames, audio interruptions, overheating or other behavior that could affect a longer run.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, checking the Live Control Room preview and stream health, verifying viewer access, and monitoring audio and video. A successful short test is useful evidence about that workload; it does not prove continuous unattended reliability.
Assess continuous operation separately
Before leaving the setup unattended, consider the condition of the used PC, cooling, power, operating-system update and restart behavior, network stability, what happens if the encoder stops, and who will monitor the stream. These are practical operational checks, not a published YouTube or OBS certification for 24/7 use. Decide how the church will notice a failure and who can respond; a working encoder alone cannot prevent every power or connectivity interruption.
When to use a different streaming approach
YouTube supports both computer-based software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. A dedicated encoder may better suit a more complex production or the church’s operating needs, but the appropriate choice depends on the equipment and workflow; YouTube’s guidance does not establish that every church needs one.
For a live service captured on site, the PC or a suitable hardware encoder must handle the live production path. A cloud playback service for uploaded prerecorded video is a different approach, not a substitute for sending a live camera feed.
