That response says the adapter currently requires a Windows PC, while Valve hopes to add other operating systems after launch. Valve’s broader Steamworks description does list Linux PC titles among supported execution models, but that does not establish Linux-host support for the headset’s dedicated PCVR streaming path.
Why Valve’s documentation can sound contradictory
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. Its Steamworks documentation names Windows and Linux PC titles among supported execution models. Those statements describe the product and the kinds of PC titles in scope; they do not guarantee that every SteamVR host configuration works with Steam Frame.
The distinction is the streaming route. The Windows-only statement in the available guidance concerns the dedicated Steam Frame wireless adapter and comes from a Steam Support response reproduced by a Steam Community user—not from a directly verified Valve guide. In that late-September 2026 discussion, the response says: “Currently, the Wireless Adapter requires a Windows PC. The hardware team hopes to expand support to other operating systems, including SteamOS, post-launch.” It also says SteamVR on Steam Machine and desktop Linux is not fully supported at that time.
Linux host options and stated prerequisites
| Linux host | Prerequisite stated for using the Steam Frame wireless adapter | What that does—and does not—mean |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine | SteamOS 3.9 or later | A stated prerequisite in the reproduced support response; not a guarantee of full support or successful setup. |
| Another Linux PC | Linux kernel 7.2 or later | A stated prerequisite in the reproduced support response; not a guarantee of compatibility with every distribution, performance, or official full support. |
These version requirements are attributed to the same reproduced response. Because the source is a community user’s reproduction of support guidance, and Linux support details can change, treat them as conditional prerequisites rather than a promise that a Linux PC will work reliably with the adapter.

Steam Frame PCVR streaming is not the same as Steam Remote Play
Valve’s general Steam Remote Play information covers streaming between Steam computers, including Linux. That is a separate capability from streaming PCVR to Steam Frame through its wireless adapter. A Linux Remote Play setup therefore does not, by itself, show that Steam Frame’s VR streaming stack or adapter is supported on Linux.

What you can do now
- For the clearest supported PCVR route: use a Windows PC with the Steam Frame wireless adapter, in line with the reproduced support response.
- If you want to try Linux: the response gives SteamOS 3.9+ for Steam Machine and Linux kernel 7.2+ for other Linux PCs, but describes Linux SteamVR as not fully supported. Expect that the stated requirements alone may not resolve compatibility or reliability issues.
- If you only need ordinary game streaming: consult Valve’s Remote Play documentation, but do not treat it as confirmation of Steam Frame PCVR-adapter support.
- If you do not need a PC host: Steam Frame also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences, as described in Valve’s product documentation.
