Yes, a Mac mini can run an encoder such as OBS to send prerecorded 4K video to YouTube Live, but whether a specific Mac mini can do it reliably around the clock depends on its hardware, encoding settings, and sustained internet connection. The official guidance establishes compatible Mac software and YouTube settings, not a guaranteed 24-hour performance result for any Mac mini model. Test the exact setup before relying on it unattended.
What you need to know before setting it up
- YouTube accepts encoder-based live streams. Its current guidance lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. For the standard SDR workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings give the current targets.
- For 4K, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 30 fps; at 60 fps, the recommendations are 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/HEVC. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a Mac mini or your internet connection can sustain them.
- OBS supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but its system requirements warn that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee streaming at a chosen resolution and frame rate. OBS documents H.264 streaming through Apple VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon; for Intel Macs, it directs users to x264 because the Intel VideoToolbox path does not provide CBR support required by most streaming services. OBS system requirements and encoder guidance.
- A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast is not a safe way to preserve a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including at 1440p and 2160p/4K. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording if the full broadcast matters.
Check channel eligibility first
- Verify the YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before planning a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
- Confirm the video and audio rights. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; copyright matches or strikes can lead to restrictions. Permission to use a video or track is specific to the rights holder and work—do not assume that owning a copy means you may broadcast it.
Choose a Mac and encoder configuration
There is no documented Mac mini generation or configuration that can be called a proven 24/7 4K choice on the basis of platform compatibility alone. OBS supports macOS 11 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon, but warns that actual streaming capability varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The sources do not provide model-specific 24-hour 4K benchmarks, thermal results, or reliability measurements.
Apple Silicon Mac mini
In OBS, check whether Apple VideoToolbox H.264 hardware encoding is available and use it only after confirming it exposes the streaming settings YouTube requires. Hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU, but that does not establish that a particular machine will sustain your chosen 4K rate continuously.
Intel Mac mini
OBS says its Intel VideoToolbox route is not suitable for streaming through services that require CBR, so its guidance is to use x264. Test whether the specific Intel Mac mini can encode your target resolution and frame rate without dropped frames or encoder overload. Do not infer suitability from the fact that OBS opens or a short preview works.

Set YouTube’s 4K stream targets in OBS
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as the target, then confirm that the selected OBS version and encoder expose a compatible combination. Exact OBS menu labels can vary by version and selected encoder; avoid assuming a setting exists if it is not shown.
| Target | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Keyframe interval | Protocol and rate control |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps, H.264 | 42 Mbps | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | RTMPS recommended; CBR |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps, AV1 or HEVC/H.265 | 30 Mbps | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | RTMPS recommended; CBR |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps, H.264 | 50 Mbps | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | RTMPS recommended; CBR |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps, AV1 or HEVC/H.265 | 35 Mbps | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | RTMPS recommended; CBR |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations; the cited page does not state a publication year. The figures are not a test result for your computer, encoder, or network. YouTube’s listed codecs and RTMP/RTMPS support also do not guarantee that every Mac/OBS encoder combination supports every codec. For 4K HDR, YouTube describes a different workflow requiring HEVC and HLS. Do not apply the SDR RTMP recommendations to an HDR setup without checking the HDR guidance on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Connect OBS to YouTube and loop the video
- In YouTube Studio, start a live stream or create a scheduled stream, then copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if offered, and enter the stream key. If configuring a server manually, use the YouTube ingest details shown for that stream and prefer RTMPS where available.
- Set the video source to the prerecorded file or playlist you intend to broadcast. Configure it to loop or advance through the intended playlist, then preview the output to check framing, audio, and transitions. Confirm looping behavior in the actual OBS version and source type you are using.
- Set the output encoder to a YouTube-compatible configuration from the table. Choose the bitrate for the desired resolution, frame rate, and codec; set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Check the encoder’s actual output, not just the requested settings.
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate. Check YouTube’s stream-health status, confirm the stream is accessible, and monitor picture and sound. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health before and during a broadcast; for a long-running loop, also test that the video advances or restarts as intended.
- Plan an archive separately. Keep OBS local recording enabled if you need a copy, and confirm the Mac has enough available storage for the recording. YouTube’s automatic archive may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours.
Make the network and Mac suitable for unattended operation
The Mac must remain powered on, OBS must continue sending, and the network must stay connected. Measure sustained upload capacity at the actual location; download speed is not a substitute for upload speed, and a shared connection can leave less capacity for your stream than a speed test suggests.
YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including any backup stream. At a 50 Mbps video target, that means planning for roughly 60 Mbps of sustained available upload before accounting for other traffic. This is a headroom recommendation, not an uptime guarantee. Use a reliable network connection and test during the hours and conditions in which the stream will run. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss bandwidth and connection interruptions.

Before leaving the setup unattended, run an extended test with the exact file or playlist, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and network. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio drift, source playback stopping, and stream-health warnings. OBS compatibility does not guarantee that the machine will sustain a particular workload, and the available guidance provides no universal Mac mini 24-hour pass/fail threshold.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient bitrate: check sustained upload—not download—capacity, reduce competing network traffic, and verify the encoder is actually sending the selected bitrate. Preserve the recommended upload headroom.
- OBS reports encoding overload or frames are dropped: confirm the resolution and frame rate are intentional, check that the selected hardware or software encoder is the one in use, and test a lower workload before returning to 4K. Intel Mac users should account for OBS’s x264 guidance.
- The stream will not connect: recheck the stream key and the ingest details shown in YouTube Studio. Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming and that initial activation has completed.
- The broadcast stops after the video ends: verify that the media source or playlist is configured to loop or advance and test a full source cycle in advance.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local recording or a shorter-session archive plan when preserving the entire program matters.
- Audio or video degrades over time: monitor the stream during an extended test and inspect the source, encoder status, and network. The cited guidance does not identify a Mac mini-specific cause or automatic OBS recovery guarantee.
