Yes—if you already own a compatible NAS that is running anyway, its extra electricity can cost less than renting a VPS. But a NAS is not automatically cheaper: the answer depends on measured power use, hardware and backup costs, electricity rates, and the VPS’s complete bill. It also depends on whether the NAS can reliably encode and upload your particular video.
What the comparison includes
A NAS can run encoder software that sends prerecorded video to YouTube Live, provided the exact NAS model supports the workload and has a stable outbound connection. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; an encoder may run in software on a computer or on hardware. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Compare the extra cost of running the stream on your NAS with the full cost of a VPS capable of the same job. If the NAS would be on regardless, its purchase price and baseline electricity are not necessarily costs caused by streaming; include the streaming-related increase and any additional equipment or resilience costs. If you would buy a NAS specifically for this stream, allocate the relevant hardware cost rather than treating the device as free.
Check whether the NAS can do the job
Confirm model and software compatibility
Identify the exact NAS model, operating system version, and encoder you intend to use. Confirm that the manufacturer supports the required software on that model. Container support is not universal: Synology’s guidance, for example, tells users to check model-specific Container Manager availability and compatible package versions. It does not establish that every Synology model—or any other NAS brand—can run a given container. Consult the Synology model-specific Container Manager guidance and the documentation for your own device.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test the actual video and stream settings
Do not infer encoding capacity from the NAS’s name or specifications alone. Test the resolution, frame rate, audio, and video you plan to stream, and monitor encoder load and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube advises testing representative content: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Its encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported codecs. Choose settings appropriate to the intended quality and the upload capacity you can sustain; a supported codec does not guarantee that a particular NAS can encode it in real time.
Allow for home-network and power interruptions
For a NAS at home, check that upload capacity has headroom for a continuous stream and consider what happens if the ISP, router, or household power fails. Test what the encoder does after a restart and whether it resumes without manual intervention. A VPS moves the encoder off the home connection, but still requires server administration and a provider plan that fits the workload. The available evidence does not establish that NAS hosting or VPS hosting has better uptime in general.

Calculate NAS and VPS costs on equal terms
Measure the NAS’s incremental electricity
Measure wall power in the NAS’s normal state and while it is streaming, using the same setup. If it would otherwise remain on, use the increase in watts for a marginal-cost estimate:
Monthly streaming energy (kWh) = extra watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000

Monthly energy cost = monthly streaming energy (kWh) × your electricity price per kWh
This uses a 30-day month for estimation. Use your local tariff and measured power; there is no universal energy cost or savings figure. Add costs that apply to your setup, such as extra hardware, backup power, or storage. If the NAS is being purchased for this use, account for the portion of its cost attributable to streaming.

Compare the complete VPS bill
Compare against a current VPS plan that can run the same encoder at the intended quality. Include the plan price and any applicable IP address, tax, storage, bandwidth, and backup charges. Check regional pricing, transfer rules, capacity, and reliability terms directly with the provider before deciding.
As dated examples, Hetzner’s price-adjustment documentation effective June 15, 2026 lists the CAX11 at €5.99 per month and the CX23 at €5.49 per month for Germany/Finland; those listed prices exclude VAT and IPv4. They are not universal VPS prices, and the figures alone do not establish that either instance is suitable for a specific encoding workload. Verify current regional prices and additional charges in Hetzner’s price adjustment documentation.

Use this decision process
- Identify the NAS and encoder. Check official compatibility information for the exact model and software version; do not assume container support.
- Run a representative test. Use the actual video and intended stream settings. Check encoder load, YouTube stream health, upload stability, and recovery after a restart.
- Measure power at the wall. Record normal NAS power and power while streaming; use the increase if the device would otherwise be running.
- Calculate local monthly cost. Apply your electricity tariff and add only the hardware, backup, or other costs that the stream would cause or that you choose to allocate to it.
- Price a comparable VPS. Verify the region, instance capacity, transfer allowance, IP, tax, storage, backup, and any other charges for a plan able to run the same workload.
- Choose the risk and workload you can support. A compatible NAS can be a low-marginal-cost choice when power and upload are stable and you are comfortable maintaining it. A VPS or managed option may suit you better if remote hosting or reduced dependence on your home network matters more than minimizing marginal spend.
Plan for 24/7 archives and YouTube rules
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that duration, so do not assume YouTube will provide a complete replay of the entire broadcast. If a replay matters, plan separate shorter sessions or another archive workflow, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on it. The YouTube encoder workflow page describes the under-12-hour archive behavior.
Using an encoder does not change the need to follow YouTube’s rules for live content and rights. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content involved. A technical test can confirm stream health, but it does not establish that content is permitted or that a 24/7 format will be treated favorably by the platform.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a NAS or VPS for the stream, StreamNeo is the first option to consider for keeping prerecorded video live on YouTube: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a first day free with no card. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
