In Java Edition, yes: a pillager’s crossbow loses durability as it fires and can eventually break. In Bedrock Edition, pillager crossbows do not break, according to the cited Minecraft Wiki references.
What happens in each edition?
| Edition | Does the pillager’s crossbow break? | What happens afterward? |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Yes. The weapon loses durability with use and can eventually break. Minecraft Wiki: Durability; Minecraft Wiki: Pillager | The pillager can become unarmed and passive toward players. Minecraft Wiki: Pillager |
| Bedrock Edition | No. The cited references say pillager-held crossbows do not break. Minecraft Wiki: Durability; Minecraft Wiki: Pillager | The Java outcome should not be assumed to apply. |
How many shots does it take?
The cited sources establish that a pillager’s crossbow can eventually break in Java Edition, but they do not provide a dependable fixed number of shots. The crossbow a pillager drops may have random durability, so a dropped weapon’s condition is not a reliable way to infer a universal shot count. Minecraft Wiki: Pillager; Minecraft Wiki: Crossbow
Can you repair a pillager’s crossbow?
Mojang says player-owned crossbows can be repaired at an anvil or grindstone. That describes repairing an item in your inventory; it does not establish that you can repair a crossbow while a pillager is holding it. Mojang: Taking Inventory: Crossbow
