A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Yes, a Raspberry Pi 4 can be part of an FFmpeg-to-YouTube Live setup, but that does not establish that a particular playlist will run unattended 24/7. Raspberry Pi documents a Pi 4 hardware H.264 encoding configuration using FFmpeg’s h264_v4l2m2m encoder. You still need to verify your files, FFmpeg build, RTMPS support, network and recovery setup together. There is a separate archive limit: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What the Pi 4’s encoding capability does—and doesn’t—prove
Raspberry Pi’s documentation includes a Pi 4 hardware H.264 encoder configuration using FFmpeg’s h264_v4l2m2m. That is evidence that the hardware encoding path exists; it is not an end-to-end test of sending a playlist to YouTube, nor a guarantee of continuous operation on a particular operating system or FFmpeg build. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding note is useful for understanding the encoder capability, but it does not certify an always-on YouTube setup.
A playlist of prerecorded files and a live camera feed are different jobs. Camera examples in Raspberry Pi community discussions do not establish a current, validated command for looping arbitrary video files with correct timestamps, compatible codecs and reconnect behavior. Treat any setup as something to test with your own sources and software rather than a ready-made 24/7 recipe.
Choose the source path: playlist or camera
| Decision | Prerecorded playlist | Live camera or other capture source |
|---|---|---|
| Input handling | Files must play repeatedly with transitions and continuous timestamps. The current sources do not establish a tested Pi 4 playlist command. | The capture device’s format, resolution, frame rate and capture utility must work with the encoder. |
| Video encoding | Compatible encoded video may be copied, while other files may need decoding and re-encoding. Check each file and the complete playlist on the target Pi. | Pi 4 hardware H.264 encoding is documented, but capture-to-encoder compatibility still needs testing. |
| Audio | Check whether the files contain audio and whether every transition produces a valid continuous audio stream. | Configure the microphone or other audio input, or deliberately provide an audio track if required. |
| Continuity and recovery | Handle end-of-file, loop boundaries, unreadable files and timestamp discontinuities. | Handle camera disconnects and capture-process failures. |
Historical Raspberry Pi forum posts show examples of Pi-based streaming, including camera-oriented setups, but these are anecdotal and do not prove current compatibility, playlist behavior or 24/7 reliability. See the Raspberry Pi community discussion of streaming questions and community discussion of FFmpeg hardware encoding as examples of experiments, not supported recipes.

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP; do not assume an old rtmp:// example uses encrypted ingest. Use the URL and protocol currently shown in your channel’s Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
For a straightforward Pi H.264 path, the following are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended video bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a promise that your Pi or upload connection can sustain the selected setting. Leave upload headroom and test the actual connection.

YouTube’s advanced settings recommend stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. The accepted audio codecs in its RTMP/RTMPS guidance are AAC and MP3. Confirm the actual outgoing audio stream—especially if some playlist items are silent or use different audio formats—rather than assuming a video-only source will behave as intended.
Set up a private test before relying on the stream
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the channel’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the current stream URL and key shown there; do not substitute a URL copied from an old example.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube describes the stream key as the means by which an encoder sends a feed for YouTube to accept. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shell history or log. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Check the Pi’s actual FFmpeg build and source files. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg exposes the encoder and protocol options you intend to use, that each playlist file can be read, and that any hardware-encoding path works with your input. The existence of
h264_v4l2m2min Raspberry Pi documentation does not mean every current distribution packages it in a compatible way. - Choose settings from the YouTube guidance. Select a resolution and frame rate the Pi and connection can sustain, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and choose a bitrate appropriate to that resolution and frame rate. Use the ingest protocol and destination shown in Live Control Room.
- Run a representative private or unlisted test. Include typical video and audio, playlist transitions and enough runtime to exercise the loop. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the preview, stream-health messages and audio/video quality, then confirm that any local recording is actually growing. See YouTube encoder settings and YouTube live streaming tips.
- Test recovery deliberately. Observe what happens if the network drops, the Pi reboots, FFmpeg exits, storage fills or a playlist file cannot be read. Add process supervision and monitoring appropriate to your deployment; neither hardware encoding capability nor a successful short test guarantees automatic recovery.
Plan separately for 24/7 transmission and YouTube replays
A feed that keeps transmitting for a full day is not necessarily a replay that YouTube will retain in one piece. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The shorter duration is not a guarantee that every stream will archive successfully. If you need a complete record of the program, record locally and check that the recording continues to grow; if you need YouTube replays, consider planned sessions within YouTube’s stated archive window. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Common failure points to check
- The stream does not connect: Check that the destination URL and key match the current Live Control Room settings, that the key has not been revoked or exposed, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected ingest protocol. Use RTMPS when the channel provides it.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering: Compare the actual upload capacity with the chosen bitrate and leave headroom. Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target, then repeat the test and monitor stream health.
- Video works but audio is missing or breaks at playlist transitions: Inspect the audio tracks and codecs in the files and confirm that the outgoing stream uses AAC or MP3. Check the complete playlist, not just a single clip.
- The playlist freezes, skips or fails to loop: The available Pi documentation does not validate a universal playlist command. Check file readability, end-of-file behavior, timestamps and transitions in your own FFmpeg setup, and verify that a supervisor can recover from a process exit.
- The Pi streams initially but stops later: Test power and network continuity, free storage, process exits and restart behavior under the actual installation. Monitor the process and local recording rather than inferring long-term reliability from a brief test.
- The broadcast is live but its full replay is missing: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a local archive if the complete program matters.
