Can a Raspberry Pi 5 Run a 24/7 Rain Sounds YouTube Stream?

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a plausible encoder for a simple rain-sounds stream, but 24/7 reliability depends on power, cooling, network stability and testing.

Yes. A Raspberry Pi 5 is a plausible encoder for a simple, low-motion rain-sounds stream, but its specifications do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Start with a static or gently moving visual, H.264 video at 720p30, AAC audio, a stable network, and proper power and cooling; then test the complete setup for an extended period before relying on it.

What a Pi 5 can—and cannot—be said to do

The workload is modest in principle: a looping image or slow-moving scene paired with continuous audio is less demanding than a multi-camera production. YouTube accepts encoder-based live broadcasts, and its current guidance supports H.264 video and AAC audio over RTMP or RTMPS. Raspberry Pi has also published a technical paper on H.264 encoding performance on Pi 5-series computers. Together, these facts make the setup plausible, not proven for every configuration. Raspberry Pi specifications and documentation · YouTube live encoder settings

No verified test establishes how long this exact combination of Raspberry Pi 5, software, power supply, cooling, network and content will stay live. Do not treat a successful launch—or a specification sheet—as a 24/7 uptime guarantee. The Pi 5 specification’s 4Kp60 HEVC figure refers to decoding, not proof of hardware HEVC encoding. The Raspberry Pi H.264 paper is relevant background, but no benchmark result or maximum encoding resolution is established here.

Recommended starting settings for YouTube

For a first attempt, prioritize a straightforward, low-motion stream rather than maximum resolution. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a Pi-specific performance guarantee. YouTube’s encoder settings

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Setting Starting point Why it matters
Video codec H.264 A conservative, widely supported encoder choice.
Resolution and frame rate 720p30 A practical starting profile for a static or slow-moving visual.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30; it is not a Pi 5 benchmark.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingestion.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds Matches YouTube’s keyframe guidance.
Audio AAC YouTube also accepts MP3; AAC is a straightforward choice for rain audio.
Transport RTMPS, if supported by the encoder YouTube recommends encrypted RTMP.

A rain stream can sound poor even when its video is static. Listen for clipping, gaps, abrupt loop boundaries and excessive silence before going live. Use an audio file and visual you have permission to broadcast; ownership or licensing cannot be inferred from the subject matter.

Prepare the Pi for continuous operation

Power and cooling

Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C power supply and says the Pi 5 performs best with active cooling. An under-powered supply can cause problems. For a system intended to run continuously, use a suitable supply and active cooling rather than assuming a brief successful test proves it will behave the same over long runs. Network capacity

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom. At an 8 Mbps video bitrate, plan for more than 8 Mbps of available upload capacity, with the additional margin available throughout the stream; audio and other network use also consume capacity. Measure your connection during the hours you plan to broadcast. A wired connection is preferable when practical, but it does not eliminate outages or congestion. YouTube streaming tips

Network interruptions can disrupt a broadcast. If the connection is shared, consider other devices’ uploads and whether the ISP connection remains stable overnight. A speed test at one moment cannot establish uninterrupted service.

Set up the YouTube broadcast

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube Live Control Room before the day you want to begin. YouTube encoder setup
  2. Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the appropriate broadcast settings and locate the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
  3. Configure your encoder on the Pi. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then apply the H.264, 720p30, 8 Mbps, CBR, 2-second keyframe and AAC starting profile. Select RTMPS if available in your encoder.
  4. Preview before going live. Confirm the picture, rain audio and stream health in Live Control Room. Correct problems before starting the public broadcast.
  5. Run a long-duration test and monitor it. Check the stream during the hours it is expected to run, including audio/video quality and stream health. YouTube advises testing before a broadcast and monitoring during it. A brief successful preview is not evidence of 24/7 reliability. Encoder setup and monitoring guidance · Network and stream tips

Copyright, live-stream rules and monetization

Before broadcasting, verify that you have the necessary rights to both the rain recording and the visual loop. A recording found online is not automatically free to reuse, and permission for a sound may not cover its accompanying video. YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies, as well as the channel’s status and eligibility, affect whether a stream can remain available or be monetized. Those outcomes depend on your actual content and account; they cannot be guaranteed for rain sounds generally. Review YouTube’s current policies and use material you created or are licensed to broadcast.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect What to do
YouTube does not receive a feed Live enablement, server URL or stream key Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement; verify the current URL and key in Live Control Room and re-enter them carefully in the encoder.
Stream health warns of unstable connection Upload capacity, congestion or network interruptions Measure upload speed during broadcast hours, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and use wired networking if practical.
Video drops frames or looks inconsistent Encoder load, bitrate or power Return to the 720p30 H.264 starting profile; check the encoder’s status and use the recommended quality 5V/5A supply.
Audio cuts out or loops badly Source file, playback loop or encoder audio configuration Test the full audio loop locally, confirm AAC or MP3 output, and listen to the YouTube preview before starting.
Pi behaves poorly after extended use Cooling, power or accumulated instability Use active cooling and appropriate power, then repeat an extended test while monitoring the system and stream.
The stream ends after a connection or YouTube interruption Recovery behavior in the local setup Check whether your encoder or workflow reconnects, and monitor Live Control Room. A Raspberry Pi specification alone does not establish automatic recovery.

Cost and operational trade-offs

A Pi setup puts encoding and recovery responsibility on your local equipment and connection. It depends on the Pi having power, cooling and usable internet, and any outage may require attention. A cloud service shifts the continuous playback and reconnection work away from the home computer, but has a recurring cost. The best fit depends on whether you want to maintain the local setup or pay for the stream to run in the cloud.
