Yes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can play a YouTube stream continuously if the connection and playback setup remain stable—but that is a qualified answer, not a guarantee of uninterrupted all-day viewing. Start at 720p or 1080p, test the exact stream where the Pi will run, and use Gigabit Ethernet if Wi-Fi proves unreliable. YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed guidance is 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K; those figures are not Indian ISP plan requirements or guarantees against congestion.
What “continuous YouTube stream” means
The answer depends partly on what you plan to leave playing. A single long video, a playlist that advances automatically and a live channel are different use cases. YouTube’s playback and troubleshooting guidance can inform a practical test, but it does not certify a particular Raspberry Pi 5 kiosk setup, automatic playlist continuation or 24/7 configuration. Live programming can also be affected by network congestion.
There is no India-wide benchmark in the official guidance cited here that establishes how every household connection will perform. Region, ISP, router position, Wi-Fi interference, other household traffic and time of day can all affect the result. Test at the intended location and quality rather than relying on the advertised maximum speed of a broadband plan.
Can the Pi 5 handle the video?
The Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor, a VideoCore VII GPU, dual-band Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet. Its processor documentation identifies hardware decoding for 4Kp60 HEVC; other codecs run in software. That means the stream’s codec, resolution and frame rate matter, and it would be inaccurate to assume every YouTube 4K stream will use the Pi’s HEVC hardware decoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation estimates H.264 decoding at roughly 10–20% CPU for 1080p24 and 50–60% for 1080p60. These are codec-decoding estimates, not benchmarks of YouTube playback in a particular browser, but they illustrate why higher frame rates can add load.
For a lower-friction starting point, use an up-to-date Raspberry Pi OS installation and browser, close unneeded tabs, and begin at 720p or 1080p. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide identifies Chromium and Firefox as browser choices. If playback buffers or drops frames, lower the quality and compare; either network conditions or local browser and decoding load could be responsible.

How much broadband speed should you allow?
YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds per stream are shown below. They are playback guidance, not guarantees, and a household connection should have headroom for other users and devices.
| YouTube playback quality | Approximate sustained speed recommended by YouTube |
|---|---|
| 360p SD | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p SD | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p HD | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 20 Mbps |
Measure the connection at the Pi’s actual location if possible, then test playback at the intended quality. A speed test is only a snapshot; repeated playback is more useful for finding interruptions caused by congestion or Wi-Fi conditions. YouTube advises trying a wired connection when useful and notes that network congestion and other factors can affect live programming.

Set up and test the Pi 5 for extended playback
- Prepare the desktop setup. Install current Raspberry Pi OS on boot media, connect the display and input devices you need, and use an appropriate power supply. Raspberry Pi’s specifications list 5V/5A USB-C power, with a 5V/3A mode that limits peripheral current. The official setup documentation covers boot media, power and I/O peripherals.
- Update the system and browser. Keep Raspberry Pi OS and your chosen browser current before testing. Use Chromium or Firefox, and close tabs and applications you do not need.
- Choose the most stable available connection. Connect through Gigabit Ethernet if practical. If using Wi-Fi, place the Pi where coverage is reliable, minimize obstructions and interference, and consider competing devices using the connection.
- Test the actual video at 720p. Play the channel or video you intend to use for a meaningful trial. Watch for buffering, dropped frames, browser instability, heat and power interruptions.
- Repeat at 1080p, then higher quality only if stable. Compare results with YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed guidance: 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K. The stream’s codec and frame rate can also affect playback.
- Validate the intended run duration. If the Pi will be unattended, test the exact video or live channel for the length of time you need. The available official documentation does not establish an all-day reliability test or guarantee for a particular ISP connection.
When YouTube buffers or playback falters
- Buffering at a quality your connection cannot sustain: lower playback quality and test again. Compare the result with YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed recommendations rather than the broadband plan’s advertised maximum.
- Playback varies over Wi-Fi: try Gigabit Ethernet, improve the Pi’s Wi-Fi placement, reduce nearby interference or test another connection. Congestion can affect live programming even when a connection appears fast at other times.
- Dropped frames or sluggish playback: reduce resolution or frame rate where YouTube offers a choice, close unneeded tabs and update or restart the browser. Codec decoding and browser load may be factors as well as network speed.
- The system becomes unstable during a long run: check that the power supply and connections are appropriate, then repeat the test with the intended setup. Raspberry Pi lists an Active Cooler as an option for uncased use under continuous heavy load, but the cited documentation does not establish that it is necessary for YouTube playback.
- A playlist stops advancing or an unattended session ends: verify playlist and browser behavior in the exact configuration you plan to use. The official material cited here does not certify automatic playlist continuation or a 24/7 kiosk configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving a Pi or home computer running. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home, and your home connection does not have to carry the stream.
- Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
