Yes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can encode and send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but that does not guarantee an unattended stream will stay up 24/7. Raspberry Pi documents a software-encoding path; whether it works reliably depends on your playlist, output settings, power, cooling, network, and recovery plan. YouTube also warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as replays.
What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—promise
Raspberry Pi’s official streaming guide includes a Pi 5 example using the software encoder x264. That establishes a documented way to encode video on the board, not a performance guarantee for every resolution, frame rate, or playlist. No verified benchmark establishes that a particular Pi 5 setup can stream a specified profile continuously for 24 hours a day.
Think of the Pi as an encoder host: it reads your local video files, encodes a live output, and sends that output to YouTube. The stream can run while the hardware and network cooperate, but the owner remains responsible for power, connectivity, software restarts, and monitoring.
What you need before setting it up
- A Raspberry Pi 5 and a 27W USB-C power supply, which Raspberry Pi recommends for the board. See the Raspberry Pi documentation.
- Boot storage, such as a microSD card, and a network connection. Ethernet can simplify a fixed installation, but no connection type guarantees uninterrupted service.
- Playlist files stored locally or on storage that remains available to the Pi.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
- A way to supervise the process and recover it after a failure, such as service startup at boot, automatic process restart, and remote monitoring.
Cooling is sensible to consider for sustained work, but the cited documentation does not establish a particular cooler requirement or temperature target. Choose and test the physical setup for your environment rather than assuming an accessory is mandatory.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure a playlist-to-YouTube workflow
- Prepare the Pi and media. Install Raspberry Pi OS, complete initial setup, and place the files where the streaming process can read them. Check that the audio and video play correctly before building the broadcast around them.
- Choose a looping encoder workflow. Use a local media/encoder pipeline that advances through the playlist and loops it. Raspberry Pi’s documented Pi 5 software-encoding example uses
x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1. The guide’s stated replacement for Pi 5 isv4l2h264enc extra-controls="controls,repeat_sequence_header=1"to that x264 setting. This is an example, not a complete playlist command or a promise that every media format and output profile will work unchanged. - Set and test the output profile. Pick a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that both your source material and upload connection can sustain. Match the encoder’s output to YouTube’s current recommendations, and use a keyframe interval appropriate to that guidance. Do not assume a Pi 5 profile from another device will perform identically. Test with the exact files and settings you intend to use; the available documentation does not certify a universal Pi 5 setting.
- Get YouTube’s stream details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public configuration. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Run a private test first. Use an unlisted test stream, then check the Live Control Room for incoming video and audio. Watch for stalls, dropped connections, audio problems, and encoder overload. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup, monitoring audio/video quality, and verifying local archive files.
- Arrange startup and recovery. Configure the streaming process to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit. Monitor the Pi remotely and check that the stream is still live; an automatic restart cannot fix a failed power supply, broken network, missing media, or invalid stream key.
- Only then switch to public operation. Confirm the playlist order, audio levels, stream status, and recovery behavior before leaving the system unattended.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so one continuous 24-hour broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete replay. If preserving a replay matters, keep a local recording or schedule planned segments under 12 hours, then verify the resulting archives. A local recording needs its own storage and failure plan.
Rights and monetization are separate questions
Copyright and music rights
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for rights on the creator, including rights needed for live and archived content and applicable music licensing. Having a copy of a song or video does not itself establish permission to stream it. Check rights for every playlist item and for both live use and any replay you intend to keep. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Repetitive or reused material
Monetization is not guaranteed by keeping a stream running. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced material can be treated as inauthentic content; reused content is evaluated at the channel level. Repeating a playlist does not itself establish eligibility. Rights and the channel’s original value matter, and YouTube makes the relevant policy decisions. The clarification was not a blanket ban on prerecorded livestreams. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshooting a Pi 5 stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming stream | Live streaming has not finished activating, the stream URL or key is wrong, or the encoder is not sending data. | Check activation and account restrictions in YouTube Studio, confirm the configured URL and key, and inspect the encoder process. Replace an exposed or suspect key. |
| The stream starts but stops later | Network interruption, power loss, process exit, or unavailable media. | Check network and power stability, confirm the playlist files remain accessible, and set up process restart plus remote monitoring. Restart behavior does not solve an underlying connection or hardware fault. |
| Video stutters or the Pi cannot keep up | The chosen encoding workload may exceed what the tested setup can sustain, or the source/profile combination may be problematic. | Test with the exact media and output settings, reduce the workload if needed, and check system health and cooling. No universal Pi 5 resolution or bitrate is established for continuous operation. |
| Audio is missing, out of sync, or wrong | Source-file audio, encoder pipeline, or output configuration issue. | Play each source locally, then monitor audio during an unlisted test and verify the encoder’s audio path before going public. |
| No complete replay appears | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use a local recording or planned shorter segments and verify each archive; do not rely on a continuous 24-hour stream to preserve a full replay. |
DIY Pi or a hosted stream?
A Pi 5 keeps files and configuration under your control, but you own its power, storage, network, restarts, and monitoring. A hosted service runs the stream on provider infrastructure, while you still manage your YouTube account, content, and rights. YouTube’s encoder help page lists a cloud-based tool category for continuous 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video; that category listing is not an endorsement or an independent evaluation of a provider.
