Can a Raspberry Pi Keep a YouTube Pre-Recorded Live Stream Online Without Dropping Frames?

A Raspberry Pi can run a pre-recorded YouTube Live stream, but reliability depends on encoding load, network stability, and testing—not the board specification alone.

Yes, a Raspberry Pi can send a pre-recorded video to YouTube Live, but no Pi model or published specification guarantees a 24/7 stream without dropped frames. The Raspberry Pi 4 has a documented hardware H.264 encoding capability up to 1080p30, making it the better-supported choice when the Pi itself must encode. Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so its sustained performance depends more on the workload and operating conditions. In either case, the encoder, power and cooling, and upload connection all matter. Test the complete setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it for a long broadcast.

What determines whether the stream stays smooth?

A pre-recorded stream still has to be encoded and sent to YouTube continuously. A capable board alone is not enough: the video pipeline must sustain its chosen output, and the internet connection must keep up with the outgoing bitrate. A temporary connectivity disruption can break the stream.

  • Encoding: The board and encoder must produce the selected resolution and frame rate without falling behind.
  • Network: Sustained upload capacity and connection reliability affect whether YouTube receives a steady feed.
  • Operating conditions: Power, cooling, the operating system and encoder build, source file, and competing workload can affect a particular setup.
  • Recovery: A stream intended to run unattended needs a plan for encoder or connection interruptions, not just a successful initial launch.

Raspberry Pi’s published capability figures describe encoding support, not certification for continuous streaming or zero dropped frames. The result depends on the exact system you run.

Raspberry Pi 4 vs. Raspberry Pi 5 for YouTube Live

Board Encoding basis What that means for this use
Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry Pi documents H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. The clearest documented Pi option when the board itself must encode H.264. The specification does not establish long-duration, zero-drop performance.
Raspberry Pi 5 Raspberry Pi documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. It can encode in software, but sustained performance depends on resolution, frame rate, settings, heat and power conditions, and competing work. Do not assume it has a hardware video encoder.

Raspberry Pi’s performance note, updated 6 May 2026, compares specific Pi 5 software encoding modes with Pi 4 hardware encoding. Those configurations are not a guarantee for every source file, operating environment, or continuous broadcast.

Choose a YouTube ingest profile the Pi and connection can sustain

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS where available. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. For a first test on a Pi, 720p30 or 1080p30 H.264 is a practical target; start lower if the board or upload connection cannot sustain the higher setting.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube minimum bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps

These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a promise that a Raspberry Pi can encode every source at that rate. YouTube recommends about 20% spare bandwidth above the total outgoing stream load. Measure upload speed where the Pi will operate; download speed does not show whether that connection can send the stream reliably.

  • Set the encoder to H.264 and CBR, and select a bitrate appropriate for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  • Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Use AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
  • Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it, and keep the stream key private.
  • If upload capacity is tight or variable, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again rather than using the highest setting by default.

How to test a Raspberry Pi setup before relying on it

  1. Pick the actual source and target. Use the pre-recorded file you intend to stream, including its audio and motion. Choose a supported H.264 output profile, such as 720p30 or 1080p30, and the matching bitrate and keyframe settings.
  2. Check upload capacity at the Pi’s location. Measure sustained upload, not download, and allow YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total outgoing bitrate. Repeat at times when the connection is likely to be busy.
  3. Run the complete pipeline. Test the actual board, power supply, cooling, operating system and encoder, source file, settings, and network—not a short sample on a different setup.
  4. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Look for warnings or interruptions while the test is running. YouTube recommends using representative audio and motion in a test.
  5. Check local recording if you make one. If the encoder also archives the stream, check that the file grows as expected and is intact; a live preview alone does not verify the archive.
  6. Exercise recovery if interruptions matter. Test your backup encoder or failover plan in advance. YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet to check whether the player rolls over to a backup.

For an event or unattended channel, a representative sustained test is more informative than a brief successful start. YouTube’s guidance covers testing and stream health in its encoder settings help.

Troubleshooting dropped frames and interruptions

Symptom Possible cause What to check or change
YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient connection. Upload capacity is too low for the total outgoing bitrate, or the connection is fluctuating. Measure upload at the Pi’s location, leave about 20% headroom, and reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. Prefer a more reliable connection.
The stream falls behind or drops frames while encoding. The selected resolution, frame rate, or encoder workload may exceed what the board can sustain under its current conditions. Try a lower target such as 720p30, check heat and power conditions, reduce competing workload, and repeat the full test. Pi 5 encodes video in software.
The stream connects but YouTube flags its settings. The encoder output may not match YouTube’s ingest recommendations. Check H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), compatible AAC or MP3 audio, and the bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
The stream stops after the connection or encoder is interrupted. The setup may not restart or fail over automatically. Test restart and backup behavior before a long event; verify the player switches to a backup encoder if that is part of your plan.
The stream looks fine but the local archive is missing or incomplete. Streaming health and local recording integrity are separate checks. Inspect archive growth during the test and verify the resulting file.
