Can a Raspberry Pi Reliably Run a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream?

A Pi can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but a working FFmpeg stream is not proof of unattended reliability. Here’s how to configure, test, and compare options.

Yes, a Raspberry Pi can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live using FFmpeg, but that does not establish that a particular Pi setup will run unattended 24/7. Continuous operation depends on the whole system: compatible encoding settings, sustained upload bandwidth, stable power and temperature, and tested recovery when the encoder, network, or host fails. There is no independently published uptime figure here that can guarantee months of uninterrupted streaming.

What “reliably” means for a Pi stream

A community Raspberry Pi example demonstrates a way to stream a video file to YouTube over RTMP with FFmpeg; it is not a measured endurance test or proof for a specific Pi model. An open-source headless project documents a Raspberry Pi-oriented FFmpeg and systemd approach that can be configured to recover from camera loss, encoder crashes, network interruptions, and reboots. That is a useful implementation pattern, not independent evidence that any setup will recover correctly without testing.

For a prerecorded broadcast, distinguish three things: FFmpeg continuing to send video, YouTube receiving a healthy stream, and the YouTube live event remaining in the desired state. Restarting FFmpeg may restore an encoder process without resolving every YouTube event or broadcast-state issue. Monitor the actual stream and validate the restart behavior you plan to depend on.

Check YouTube’s requirements before choosing a profile

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported because it encrypts the RTMP connection. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Example H.264 profile YouTube-recommended video bitrate Keyframe guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a Pi can encode a given profile or that a particular internet connection can sustain it. Speed-test the upload connection and choose a rate it can maintain with headroom beyond the video stream. Test the actual video’s motion and audio: a static clip and a busy game recording can place different demands on the encoder and connection.

When the source file is already compatible, avoiding an unnecessary transcode may reduce the Pi’s workload if the chosen FFmpeg workflow supports stream-copying. Copying does not remove the need to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements; check the source codec, audio, bitrate, and keyframe cadence, and validate the resulting stream in YouTube Studio.

Set up and validate the local method

  1. Enable YouTube Live in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete it before the intended launch and confirm the channel is ready in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
  2. Create the broadcast and protect its stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in a public script repository. Use RTMPS if your encoder and selected YouTube ingest endpoint support it.
  3. Choose a conservative profile. Start at a resolution and frame rate the Pi can sustain and your upload can carry continuously. Set constant bitrate encoding, a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), and compatible audio and video formats. YouTube’s bitrate table is a target for ingest, not a Pi performance benchmark.
  4. Configure FFmpeg for the source. Point it at the intended file or playlist and configure it to loop the material as needed. Decide whether to copy compatible streams or transcode; verify that the actual output matches YouTube’s requirements. Keep credentials out of logs and shared command history where practical.
  5. Run a representative test. Test with audio and movement resembling the real stream, not just a short static sample. Check both the picture and sound in YouTube Studio, along with stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health during the event (encoder settings and stream health).
  6. Supervise the process and startup. Configure a process supervisor such as systemd to start the encoder after boot and restart it after a process failure. Test a reboot and a deliberately interrupted network connection so you know what happens. Confirm separately how the YouTube broadcast behaves after an encoder restart; a process restart alone is not a full lifecycle plan.
  7. Observe the deployment under its real conditions. Before relying on unattended operation, run a sustained test long enough to reveal practical issues, without assuming any universal test duration. Monitor stream health, upload stability, temperature, power, and storage behavior. The evidence does not establish a particular Pi model, case, cooling arrangement, or storage setup as guaranteed for 24/7 duty.

What can interrupt an unattended stream

  • Upload variation or a network outage: The configured bitrate may exceed sustained capacity, or the connection may drop. Lower the profile, verify sustained upload headroom, and test the recovery path rather than relying on a single speed test.
  • Encoder or host failure: FFmpeg can exit, or the Pi can reboot or lose power. A supervisor can restart a process, but it cannot compensate for an unstable power supply or guarantee YouTube resumes the intended broadcast.
  • Thermal or workload limits: The available examples do not establish which model or cooling configuration will sustain a chosen encode profile. Validate your actual hardware, enclosure, ambient conditions, and workload.
  • Source or format mismatch: A file that plays locally may still have codecs or keyframe timing unsuitable for the chosen ingest workflow. Check the outgoing stream against YouTube’s supported formats and inspect Studio health messages.
  • Rights and channel policy: A prerecorded video is not exempt from YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s policies on copyright and YouTube channel monetization and reused content. Permission to broadcast does not itself guarantee monetization eligibility.

Choose between a Pi, another local encoder, and cloud playback

Approach What it gives you What you must plan for
Raspberry Pi with FFmpeg Local control over the device and streaming workflow. Validate encoding capacity and manage local power, network, operating system, supervision, and YouTube broadcast recovery.
More capable local computer or hardware encoder A different local encoding option if the Pi cannot sustain the chosen profile. Still depends on local power, network, monitoring, and recovery. The available evidence does not establish comparative performance or cost.
Cloud playback service Playback and streaming operations run with a provider rather than on your home encoder. Check current availability, plan limits, terms, and costs; you rely on the provider and still need to verify YouTube stream health.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud options including Gyre, described there for prerecorded 24/7 YouTube streams, and Upstream.so, described as a cloud studio for continuous live streams. Listings are not independent reliability measurements; check each provider’s current service details before choosing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is continuous prerecorded playback without keeping a Pi or computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
