Yes—with the right model and setup, a Raspberry Pi can encode and send 1080p video to YouTube. That does not mean every Pi setup is proven to stay live without interruption for 24 hours a day. The model, video source, encoder, network, power and cooling all matter, so test the complete build before relying on it.
What “1080p 24/7” requires
Encoding and sending a 1080p stream is one challenge; keeping the broadcast going around the clock is another. Raspberry Pi’s published information establishes encoding capability for particular workloads, and YouTube specifies ingest settings. Neither certifies a complete Raspberry Pi setup for uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
This guide uses 1080p30 as the practical starting point because Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 5 encoding result is specifically for real-time 1080p30. Your actual result may differ with camera or capture hardware, conversion, overlays, audio, software, other processes, network conditions and the environment.
Which Raspberry Pi can encode 1080p?
| Model generation | H.264 encoding path | What that means for a 1080p30 stream |
|---|---|---|
| Models before Pi 5 | Raspberry Pi says every model before Pi 5 included a hardware H.264 encoder in its VideoCore GPU. | A suitable older model can use hardware encoding. Confirm that your chosen software actually uses that encoder and test the complete workload. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | H.264 encoding is done in software; Pi 5 has no hardware encoder. | Raspberry Pi’s 2026 low-latency encoding note reports real-time 1080p30 in its described test, using 60–90% of one CPU core. This is a result for that test, not a guarantee for every source, scene or concurrent workload. |
The model name alone does not prove suitability. A Pi that encodes a simple video may behave differently with a camera feed that needs conversion, moving scenes, overlays or additional processing. Compare your intended workload against the encoder path and measure its performance on the actual build.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure YouTube’s 1080p30 ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for H.264 1080p30 lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. Set a constant bitrate (CBR), use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. Send progressive video and use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP.
Your upload connection must sustain the selected video bitrate reliably, as well as the audio and any normal variation in your connection. A speed-test result by itself does not establish that the connection will remain stable during a long broadcast. Test with audio and motion comparable to the real stream, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.

Build and test the setup for continuous use
- Identify the board and encoding route. Check the exact Raspberry Pi model and confirm in your streaming software that it uses the hardware H.264 encoder where available. On Pi 5, account for software encoding and competing CPU work.
- Start with a realistic video target. Use 1080p30 as a baseline unless the use case needs a different frame rate. Test the actual camera or capture source, scene motion, audio, overlays and conversion steps you intend to run.
- Apply YouTube’s ingest settings. For H.264 1080p30, configure CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and a bitrate within YouTube’s stated 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended guidance. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Provide suitable power. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/3A supply for Pi 4 Model B and a 5V/5A supply for Pi 5. Account for the power needs of connected cameras, USB devices and other peripherals as well as the board.
- Watch temperature and performance. Raspberry Pi documents progressive Arm throttling between 80°C and 85°C and defines 85°C as the SoC thermal limit. A heatsink or small fan can reduce throttling and improve performance, but only observation under your intended workload shows whether cooling is adequate.
- Run a representative extended trial. Check stream health, audio, image quality, temperature and behavior after ordinary network variation. Raspberry Pi and YouTube do not establish a universal 24/7 uptime guarantee for a particular build, so do not infer one from a short successful test.
- Make a recovery and recording plan. A power or network interruption can break continuity; the cited YouTube guidance recommends testing and monitoring but does not establish that every encoder will reconnect automatically. If keeping a complete local recording matters, plan for separate recording and storage.
Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. They do not establish that a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If you need to retain the entire day, use a separate recording plan and verify YouTube’s current controls rather than assuming a 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archive.
Common problems and what to check
- Encoding cannot keep up: Check whether the software is using the expected H.264 path, and reduce competing work or the workload if performance is unstable. Pi 5’s published 1080p30 result used 60–90% of one CPU core in a described low-latency test; your source and software may demand more.
- Stream health reports connection trouble: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with audio and normal variation. Test again under conditions resembling the actual broadcast rather than relying only on a speed test.
- Performance worsens during a long run: Observe temperature and throttling, and check the supply and peripheral power requirements. Consider a heatsink or fan if temperatures are affecting performance.
- The stream stops after an interruption: Check the network and power, then determine whether your encoder reconnects as expected. Test recovery behavior; the cited guidance does not promise automatic reconnection for every Pi setup.
- The full broadcast is not available as an archive: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive instruction covers streams under 12 hours, not a full continuous stream exceeding that duration. Use separate local recording when complete retention is required.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube broadcast from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops from the cloud, supports any quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live encoding. Read more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
