If you already own suitable solar panels, battery capacity and a PC, running the stream locally may cost less in cash than paying for cloud service. If you must buy and install a solar-and-battery system for this one job, its upfront and replacement costs can outweigh a cloud subscription. Measure the PC’s actual power draw, price the system and cloud option you would really use, and compare both over the same period.
What you are comparing
A solar-powered PC and “cloud” are not automatically equivalent. A local setup uses your computer and internet connection to send the video to YouTube. A cloud option may mean either a general-purpose virtual machine (VM), which you configure and operate, or managed cloud playout, which handles continuous playback through a service. Compare the managed service with the local setup when automation, monitoring and support matter; compare a VM when you are prepared to install and maintain the encoder yourself.

Can a PC send prerecorded video to YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” The encoder sends the video as a live stream; stopping the encoder’s content input ends the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder

That workflow establishes technical compatibility, not permission to rebroadcast any particular recording. Use content you have the rights to stream and check current YouTube copyright, platform and monetization rules. A live label does not change the underlying rights or eligibility of the video.
Connection and encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate. It transcodes incoming live streams into formats suited to viewers’ devices and networks. Select settings using YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then make sure your upstream connection can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom for fluctuations. Test and monitor stream health; interruptions and maintenance effort have a cost even when they do not appear on the electricity bill. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions
Measure the PC’s annual electricity use
- Measure at the wall. Use a power meter to measure the PC while it is running the intended encoder and playback workload. Include a display if it will stay on, the router, and any conversion equipment. An idle or advertised power rating is not a substitute for the operating load.
- Calculate annual energy. For a constant average load, annual use in kWh = average watts × 8.76. For example, each 10 W of continuous draw uses 87.6 kWh per year. This is arithmetic from the formula, not a measured PC result.
- Price grid electricity and backup. Multiply the energy supplied from the grid by your actual marginal electricity rate. If solar will not cover every hour, include expected grid backup rather than treating the stream as wholly solar-powered.
- Account for solar-system losses and autonomy. Size for the local solar resource, conversion losses, peak PC draw, battery capacity and the period you need to run through night or low-sun conditions. Average daily solar production alone does not guarantee continuous operation during poor conditions.
Include the real cost of solar and storage
Solar electricity is not cost-free when the panels, inverter, battery, installation or replacements are new purchases. Annualize the installed system cost over the service life you choose, and include maintenance and battery replacement assumptions. If you already have a solar system for other uses, compare only the incremental capacity and storage needed for streaming where that allocation is appropriate.

The DOE benchmarks model residential, commercial and utility systems and include operation and maintenance analysis. Do not divide a benchmark system price by the PC’s annual kWh and call the result an electricity rate: system lifetime, financing, storage, site-specific production and residual value all affect the comparison. Compare the cloud bill fairly
General-purpose VM
A VM is a building block, not a turnkey playlist service. You need to install and configure encoder or playout software, make the video available to it, and keep the process working. Estimate the VM’s runtime cost for the chosen machine and region, plus storage and any other applicable charges. Managed cloud playout
A managed service can reduce the setup and ongoing work of keeping a playlist running, but compare its actual destination support, plan limits, playlist controls and service terms. Looping Stream describes a workflow in which uploaded videos run without a personal computer left online; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent test. Looping Stream
Upstream’s page, accessed 2026-10-03, listed a free plan limited to 24 hours per month and a paid plan at $30 monthly for one concurrent stream. These are vendor-published terms and may change, so verify the current plan before comparing. Upstream pricing
Cloudflare Stream publishes usage pricing of $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered and storage in $5 monthly increments per 1,000 minutes of capacity. It is a cloud video product, not necessarily a turnkey service for sending a continuous playlist to YouTube Live; check current terms and product fit before treating it as an alternative. Find your break-even point
If you already own solar and a PC
Compare the extra cost of running the PC with the cloud bill for the same period. Include battery wear, any grid backup and the time you spend monitoring or recovering the stream. Existing equipment may make the local option attractive on cash outlay, but that alone does not account for reliability or your time.
If you are buying equipment for this stream
Estimate the appropriately sized installed system, annualize its cost over your chosen service life, and add maintenance and replacements. Compare that total with the actual VM or managed-playout bill over the same period. A broad residential PV-plus-storage benchmark signals that equipment is a substantial capital item; it cannot determine the cost for your load, location or autonomy target.
- Use a measured average and peak load, not a guess.
- Use your site’s solar conditions and the battery autonomy your uptime target requires.
- Count the PC and connectivity costs that differ between options, but do not charge the solar comparison for capacity you would buy anyway without stating that allocation.
- Compare cloud compute, storage and applicable network charges separately; a no-charge destination transfer is not a free VM.
- Give maintenance, interruptions and recovery effort a place in the decision, even if you cannot assign them a precise dollar value.
Without the location, measured load, equipment ownership, uptime requirement and actual cloud plan, a universal “solar is cheaper” or “cloud is cheaper” verdict would be misleading. There is no directly comparable independent test establishing savings for a solar-powered PC versus a named cloud service.
