Yes, a secondhand computer can carry an anti-cheat restriction that affects its next user—but that does not mean every ban is tied to the CPU, or that every provider uses the same rules. There is no universal pre-purchase lookup established by the policies discussed here. Activision documents a Call of Duty status check that must be performed on the device; Riot, by contrast, warns people not to log in to a computer they suspect has an HWID ban.
Can a used CPU or computer carry a ban from its previous owner?
It is possible for a later user to encounter a restriction associated with a device or its physical components. Riot says its hardware ID (HWID) bans apply to physical components of a computer, and warns that an account used on affected hardware may itself be restricted on that device and banned for a set period. Activision says Call of Duty hardware bans apply to the device and can extend across Call of Duty titles. Riot’s HWID-ban guidance and Activision’s enforcement policy describe those provider-specific rules.
That is not the same as proving that a processor’s serial number is always what an anti-cheat system identifies. Riot’s guidance discusses a computer’s physical components; a separate Riot technical article about Vanguard discusses a TPM endorsement key and, in that specific context, the possibility of replacing a TPM chip or CPU to avoid re-detection. These sources do not establish a universal CPU-specific ban mechanism or a reliable component-swap fix.
Can you check for a ban before buying?
There is no single cross-provider registry or universal pre-purchase check established by these policies. The available methods differ, and one provider’s check says nothing about another game’s anti-cheat system.

Call of Duty: an on-device check
Activision says a user can sign in to a crossplay Call of Duty title on the device using an account in good standing. If the device has a hardware ban, a status notification appears. This is a check performed on the device, not a remote lookup before purchase; it also requires using an account that meets Activision’s stated condition. Activision cautions buyers and users of secondhand, borrowed, shared, or public devices in its policy.
Riot: do not test suspected hardware with an account
Riot advises against logging in to a computer suspected of having an HWID ban. Its guidance says another account used on that hardware can be restricted on the device and banned for a set period. Testing with your personal account could therefore expose that account to consequences; do not treat a login attempt as a harmless inspection. See Riot’s guidance.

Anti-cheat ban rules differ by provider
“Hardware ban” is not a uniform sanction. These official policies describe different scopes, durations, and ways to check or challenge enforcement.

How to reduce risk when buying a used CPU or PC
- Identify the game and enforcement provider. Check the current official policy for the game you intend to play; do not assume a result for Call of Duty, Riot games, BattlEye-protected games, or VAC-secured servers applies to another system.
- Ask the seller for the system’s history. Ask whether the computer has received an anti-cheat or account enforcement notice, and request a return window. Seller answers and returns are ordinary buyer protections, not anti-cheat certifications.
- Do not test suspected Riot-banned hardware with your account. Riot specifically warns that logging in can affect the account used on the device.
- Use only provider-documented checks. For Call of Duty, Activision’s check requires using the device and an account in good standing in a crossplay title. It does not verify status for other providers.
- Keep proof of purchase and seller communications. If an enforcement issue appears, contact the relevant provider through its official support route and provide the requested information.
Will reinstalling Windows or replacing the CPU remove a ban?
Do not rely on either as a guaranteed remedy. Riot says reinstalling a game or deleting the account responsible does not remove an HWID ban. Its TPM/CPU discussion is specific technical context, not evidence that replacing a CPU will clear a ban in every case. BattlEye’s appeal route requires the exact ban ID and game; Riot allows re-evaluation in some cases, without promising reversal; Activision says hardware bans are not appealable under the cited policy.
