You can stream prerecorded video on YouTube and eligible YouTube Partner Program (YPP) channels can monetize live streams. But putting a video on a live feed does not make it original, rights-cleared, or automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube reviews the channel’s content and policies, and a repetitive loop or minimally changed reused material can put approval at risk.
What must be true for a prerecorded livestream to earn money?
There are two separate questions: whether your channel qualifies for YPP, and whether the content meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Going live, seeing ads, or streaming for a long time does not by itself establish either.
Meet the published YPP requirements
YouTube’s published long-form eligibility route is 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous 12 months. The alternative is 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views during the previous 90 days. The channel must also follow monetization policies, be in a supported country or region, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link or set up an AdSense for YouTube account. Meeting a threshold makes the channel eligible to apply for review; it does not guarantee acceptance. YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility.
Pass a channel-wide originality review
YouTube’s monetization rules apply to live streams as well as Shorts and long-form videos. Reviewers may consider the channel’s main theme, newest and most-viewed videos, content responsible for the greatest share of watch time, metadata, and About section. YouTube expects original, authentic work; repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. Reused material needs significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Can looping or repeated gameplay get rejected as repetitive or reused content?
It can, depending on what the channel publishes and how much original value it adds. For a gaming channel, a long stream of your own gameplay is not automatically equivalent to a stream assembled from other people’s clips, but simply replaying the same short segment or repeating a template with little meaningful variation can raise concerns about repetitive or mass-produced content. Adding a live label or changing the delivery format does not, by itself, turn borrowed material into original work.
- Originality: Are the footage, commentary, analysis, or other substantial creative elements yours?
- Variation: Does the stream offer meaningful differences or a coherent viewing experience, rather than an unchanged loop designed mainly to accumulate viewing time?
- Added value: If you use material created by someone else, have you transformed it substantially or added significant commentary, educational value, or entertainment value?
- Channel context: Would a reviewer examining your channel as a whole understand what original contribution you make?
YouTube’s policy puts it plainly: “Be your original creation. If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own.” That standard applies to the content—not merely to the software or method used to stream it. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Do 24/7 livestream hours count toward the 4,000-hour threshold?
Only qualifying public watch hours count, and the archive matters. YouTube excludes livestream watch hours from the 4,000-hour route when a stream is unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single unbroken 24-hour broadcast could therefore leave you without an archive; do not assume its viewing time will count toward the threshold. YPP eligibility and Archive live streams.
Plan and verify the archive
- Choose a stream length with the archive limit in mind. A stream under 12 hours may be automatically archived; a longer one may not be captured. This is an archive limitation, not a rule that prevents a live broadcast.
- After the broadcast, check YouTube Studio. Confirm that a public VOD exists and is available to viewers; do not infer archive status from the fact that the stream ran.
- Check eligible watch-hour reporting in Studio. An archive’s existence does not mean every view or hour qualifies. The VOD must remain public, and YouTube’s YPP eligibility rules determine what counts.
Archive eligibility and live monetization are separate matters: a channel may be able to monetize an eligible live broadcast even though a stream’s missing or ineligible archive does not help it reach the public-watch-hours threshold.

What monetization features can an eligible live stream use?
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships among live-stream monetization options for eligible creators. When monetization is enabled for a live stream, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled; mid-roll ads can be automated or controlled manually. Availability of individual features depends on the channel and applicable requirements. Monetize your live stream and How to earn money on YouTube.
Ads are not guaranteed to appear for every viewer or at every opportunity. YouTube states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.” It also reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on. That is YouTube’s comparison across 207 countries in January 2024, not a promised result or estimate for an individual channel. Monetize your live stream.

Yes. YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights holders. The rights required depend on the specific content and territories. A prerecorded file is not automatically cleared for broadcast, and owning a copy does not by itself give you streaming rights. For gameplay streams, consider each element separately: game footage, music in the game, overlays, trailers, cutscenes, and third-party clips may have different rights or restrictions. Check the applicable permissions before broadcasting; monetization eligibility does not resolve a rights issue.
How to run a prerecorded stream without leaving a computer on
If you use your own encoder or computer, arrange the recording or playlist, connect the broadcast through YouTube’s live-stream setup, and keep the streaming system running for the duration. A 24/7 schedule also needs a plan for interruptions, connection failures, and the public archive if you are pursuing qualified watch hours. Regardless of the streaming method, YouTube’s originality, rights, and YPP rules still apply.
Or let it run in the cloud

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming a live stream is automatically original: Review the footage and added material against YouTube’s channel-wide originality and reused-content rules.
- Running one continuous broadcast beyond 12 hours to build watch hours: The archive may not be captured. Plan around the archive limit and verify the resulting public VOD and eligible-hour reporting.
- Counting an unlisted, deleted, or unarchived stream toward the threshold: Those livestream hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour route. Check the archive’s public status and YPP reporting.
- Assuming visible ads mean you are earning: Channels outside YPP are not entitled to a share of those ads, and eligible live-stream ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
- Broadcasting music or clips because they are already in a recording: Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the live use; a copy of a file is not proof of permission.
