Yes—if the laptop stays awake, the encoder keeps sending video to YouTube, and the network connection holds. Closing the lid does not keep a stream alive by itself: if the computer sleeps or the encoder feed stops, the livestream can stop too.
What has to keep working
A YouTube Live stream made with an encoder depends on the encoder sending a video feed to YouTube. The encoder connects using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key; closing the laptop lid is safe only if it does not interrupt that feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Also distinguish an encoder loop from playback looping on a YouTube watch page. Repeating a video in a browser does not itself send an encoder livestream. For a live loop, the encoder must send the video feed to YouTube.
Keep a Windows laptop awake when the lid closes
Microsoft says many laptops sleep when the lid closes. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Control Panel, go to Power Options, then select Choose what closing the lid does. Set the plugged-in lid action to an option that keeps the PC awake, if available. Configure the battery action separately; a long stream can also end if the laptop runs out of power. Available choices can vary by hardware and manufacturer. Follow Microsoft’s current power guidance.

Keep the laptop on its power adapter for an extended stream, and confirm that changing the lid action has not affected the encoder or network. A power setting that prevents sleep does not guarantee the encoder, Wi-Fi, or YouTube connection will remain stable.
Use a closed-display Mac only if its model supports the setup
Apple’s guidance for closed-display use calls for an external display, mouse, and keyboard. Apple silicon Macs may ask you to authorize connected accessories. Requirements can differ by model and macOS version, so do not assume one Mac’s setup applies to every MacBook.

For the specific M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro dual-display workflow, Apple lists supported macOS versions, external input devices, and power requirements. Check Apple’s accessory guidance and the M3 MacBook display instructions for your model. If using a dock or external display, verify compatibility with that Mac, then test the encoder with the lid shut.
Test the complete lid-closed stream before relying on it
Run a private or unlisted test, if appropriate, using the same power, lid, encoder, and network setup you intend to use. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health. Its checks include previewing the stream, confirming the local archive is growing, verifying the event is accessible on the channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. These are platform planning instructions, not a guarantee that a laptop will stream reliably. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not promise an uninterrupted stream for that duration. See YouTube’s encoder documentation.
A wired network may help compared with Wi-Fi, according to YouTube, but it will not prevent sleep or guarantee an uninterrupted stream. See YouTube’s system guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or misbehaves
- The stream ends as soon as the lid closes: the laptop may be sleeping. Recheck the lid-close action for plugged-in use on Windows. On a Mac, confirm that your model supports the closed-display setup and that its required display, input devices, and power are connected.
- The laptop stays awake, but YouTube loses the feed: check that the encoder is still running and connected with the correct stream URL and key. Confirm the network connection and encoder status; a lid setting cannot repair a dropped encoder feed.
- The stream appears live but has no picture or sound: inspect the encoder preview and YouTube stream health, then check the audio and video quality in the actual lid-closed configuration.
- The local archive does not grow or the event is not accessible: check the encoder and event setup, then verify the archive and watch-page access during a test rather than assuming the public stream is working.
- The setup works briefly but fails during a longer run: check power, network stability, and whether the computer remains awake. A wired connection may help against Wi-Fi problems, but is not a guarantee.
