A scheduled, automatic prerecorded broadcast may not let you change overlays while it plays. An encoder-based stream or a live studio with suitable prerecorded-source support can provide more control. Check the exact workflow before uploading or scheduling: YouTube is the destination, while the service or encoder controls whether graphics are composited into the outgoing video.
What “adding an overlay” can mean
There are two distinct ways to put a graphic over a video:
- Bake it into the video: Add the graphic during editing, before uploading. It will appear whenever that file plays, but you cannot change or remove it independently during the broadcast.
- Composite it during the stream: A studio or encoder layers the graphic over the video as it sends the output to YouTube. Whether you can add, remove, or change it during playback depends on the service and mode.
Do not assume that a service offering scheduled prerecorded streams also offers live overlay controls for those streams.
What the documented workflows allow
Automatic prerecorded broadcast
StreamYard says its automatically running prerecorded streams cannot be controlled for overlays or media assets as they can in a standard live stream. It also says comments cannot be displayed on-stream in that automatic mode because the broadcast is not controlled from a studio; comments remain visible on the destination platform. See StreamYard’s Pre-recorded Streaming help page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
StreamYard suggests uploading a long-form video and recording it after setting up the stage as a possible alternative. That suggestion is not a guarantee of a scheduled cloud loop or of being able to change an overlay midstream.
Live studio with a prerecorded source
A live studio can provide overlay controls, but support for using a prerecorded video as the source—and for changing overlays while it plays—depends on the product and mode. StreamYard documents custom overlay assets for its live studio. Its stated asset dimensions are 1280 × 720 pixels, with JPG, PNG, or GIF formats; it recommends a transparent background when the graphic should sit over the video without obscuring it. The page also lists a file-size limit below 20 MB and tighter limits for GIFs. Check the current details and limits in StreamYard’s asset-size guidance; those specifications are for its studio, not universal requirements.

Encoder output to YouTube
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance describes encoders as supporting overlays alongside other production equipment. An encoder workflow can give the operator control over the composed output, but that does not mean every separate cloud looping service supports live compositing. Confirm that the encoder can take your prerecorded video as its source and that you can operate the overlay controls during transmission. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Which approach should you choose?
| Approach | Overlay control | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic prerecorded broadcast | Limited or unavailable in StreamYard’s documented automatic mode | Convenient scheduling and automatic start; bake graphics into the file if they do not need to change during playback, or verify another mode’s controls. |
| Live studio with prerecorded source | Studio controls may be available, depending on the product and its support for prerecorded inputs | More operator control, but verify the precise source and overlay capabilities before relying on it. |
| Encoder-driven output | YouTube identifies overlays as an encoder capability | Flexible composition requires configuring and operating the encoder workflow. |
Verify overlay support before scheduling
- Choose the exact service and mode. Check whether you are selecting an automatic prerecorded broadcast, a live studio, or an encoder-driven stream. A schedule feature alone does not establish live control.
- Confirm the prerecorded-source workflow. Make sure that mode accepts the video as an input and supports the YouTube destination you plan to use.
- Ask whether overlays are editable during playback. Distinguish live controls from graphics that must be part of the uploaded video. Confirm whether you can change or remove an overlay after the stream starts.
- Check asset requirements and operating limits. Verify the current dimensions, formats, file-size limits, scheduling and runtime limits, and output resolution in the service’s documentation.
- Test the complete setup before relying on it. Confirm that the video and graphic appear as intended in the outgoing stream, not just in a preview or scheduled-event page.
Common points of confusion
- “I can schedule it, so I can control it live.” Scheduling means the broadcast can start automatically; it does not prove that an operator can change studio assets during playback.
- “YouTube supports overlays, so my loop service does too.” YouTube’s guidance establishes an encoder capability, not a feature guarantee for every hosted looping service.
- “A studio overlay limit applies everywhere.” StreamYard’s 1280 × 720 guidance describes its documented assets; other services may specify different requirements.
- “A looping background workaround proves overlays work.” StreamYard describes using OBS to loop a video as a virtual camera for a background or chroma-key workflow and warns that this uses substantial computer resources. That is not evidence that OBS is required for ordinary overlays. See StreamYard’s video-background help page.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. The three steps are: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo’s documented features are 24/7 looping and playlists; they do not establish live overlay controls. If an overlay must be added or changed during transmission, verify that capability with the selected service before going live; graphics already baked into your uploaded video will travel with it.
