Not as a conventional encoder livestream. For a radio-style YouTube broadcast, send audio together with a video signal—usually a static image or a simple visualizer. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies video settings alongside audio settings; it does not explicitly say that every audio-only payload is rejected, so a still image is best understood as a practical setup, not a special YouTube audio-only mode.
What “without video” means for a YouTube radio stream
A radio broadcast can have no camera footage and still include video. The encoder can pair your audio with a still cover image or an animated visualizer, then send both to YouTube. That gives viewers a visual while the audio remains the main content.
YouTube’s encoder settings describe supported video codecs and frame rates as well as audio codecs and settings. For an encoder-based stream, plan to provide both an audio feed and a continuous video signal. YouTube does not explicitly state in the cited guidance that it categorically rejects an audio-only payload, so do not treat that as a direct policy rule.
What you need before going live
- A verified YouTube channel with no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance.
- A software or hardware encoder that can send audio and video to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming; it can use equipment such as a microphone and preamp for live speech. See YouTube’s encoder overview.
- Your audio source and a visual to accompany it: a still image, cover art you have rights to use, or a simple visualizer.
- A YouTube stream key and the server URL from your stream setup. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Permission to broadcast every track and other audio in the program. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including content in another live broadcast. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Configure a static image or visualizer stream
- Prepare the visual. Choose a still image or visualizer that you are permitted to use. If using a still, make sure your encoder can keep it on screen for the full broadcast; a visualizer can provide movement but is not required as a separate YouTube feature.
- Create the livestream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and select the encoder option. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder. YouTube’s encoder overview explains this connection flow at support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883.
- Set the video output. YouTube’s current encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use constant bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds; YouTube advises not exceeding four seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring a specific encoder, since supported settings can change.
- Set the audio output. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended stereo settings include a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. These are guidance values, not a guarantee that every encoder interface uses identical labels.
- Prefer RTMPS and test first. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Test with representative audio and video—including similar motion to the real broadcast—before the scheduled start. Confirm that the still or visualizer remains present and the audio level is clean.
- Check the preview and stream health. In Live Control Room, verify the preview before starting, then monitor stream health messages and audio/video quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring quality.
Activation, rights, and other things that can interrupt a radio stream
First-time activation
YouTube says first-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours. Once livestreaming is enabled, a stream may start immediately. Do not wait until just before an event to verify that your channel is eligible and activated; check the current requirements at YouTube Help.

Copyright checks apply to audio
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image; if the identified content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the livestream. Even licensed third-party content may require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that your rights cover livestreaming on YouTube before broadcasting; permission to play music privately or in a venue does not by itself establish permission to stream it.
Troubleshooting a radio-style livestream
- You have audio but no visible image: Check that the encoder is actually sending a video stream, not just an audio source. Confirm that the still image or visualizer is assigned to the output scene and visible in the encoder preview.
- YouTube shows no preview or reports a connection problem: Recheck the server URL and stream key, verify that the encoder is sending a supported video and audio format, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. Re-enter the key if it was copied incorrectly.
- The broadcast sounds distorted or too quiet: Check the source level and encoder audio meter, and test the actual program audio before going live. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and video rather than assuming a silent or unrelated test reflects the real stream.
- The stream is interrupted after music starts: Check Live Control Room alerts and review your rights for the specific audio. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream when identified third-party content continues.
- Livestreaming is unavailable on the channel: Confirm channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a restriction has applied within the past 90 days. For a first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
