Yes—supported AMD Radeon cards can run Minecraft’s official ray tracing, but only in Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition). Microsoft identifies Radeon RX 6000 Series and newer as examples of DirectX hardware-ray-tracing-capable GPUs. That is a documented generation baseline, not a guarantee for every individual card or laptop. Java Edition has no equivalent built-in ray-tracing mode.
What “Minecraft RTX” means on an AMD card
“RTX” is NVIDIA’s branding, but an NVIDIA GPU is not required for Minecraft Bedrock’s official ray-tracing feature. The relevant requirement is a GPU that supports DirectX Raytracing (DXR). Microsoft’s ray-tracing guide names AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series and newer as supported examples.
The official route is Minecraft for Windows, the Bedrock Edition for PC. The PC product page lists ray tracing as a Bedrock feature requiring a DXR-capable GPU. Owning Minecraft Java Edition, or simply having an AMD card that runs ordinary Minecraft, does not by itself qualify you.
Which Radeon generations should work?
| AMD graphics | What to expect |
|---|---|
| RX 6000 Series | Microsoft’s documented AMD baseline for hardware ray tracing in Bedrock. Check the exact model and system configuration. |
| RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series | Newer Radeon generations with hardware ray-tracing capability; they should meet the generation-level requirement, subject to the exact GPU, drivers, and game setup. |
| RX 5000 Series and older | Do not expect the official hardware-ray-tracing mode. These older families are not the documented supported baseline. |
| Integrated or laptop Radeon graphics | Check the precise GPU model. “Radeon” in a processor or laptop name is not enough to establish DXR support, and mobile models can differ from similarly named desktop cards. |
Microsoft does not provide a complete SKU-by-SKU whitelist in the cited guide. Treat RX 6000 and newer as the safest documented family-level reference, not an unconditional promise that every system will expose the option or run it smoothly.

Requirements and performance expectations
Microsoft’s guide lists a 64-bit Windows PC, a DXR-capable GPU, an Intel Core i5 or equivalent processor, at least 8 GB of RAM, and Minecraft version 1.16.200 or higher as requirements for its documented ray-tracing setup. These are prerequisites, not a performance guarantee or a recommended settings profile. Current game versions and menus may differ from the guide’s original version reference.
How well it runs depends on the specific GPU and its VRAM, resolution, render distance, resource-pack texture size, driver, CPU, and background load. A card can support ray tracing yet struggle at high resolution or with demanding PBR textures. There is no single frame-rate figure that applies to all Radeon cards and worlds, so compare performance for the exact model and settings you plan to use rather than treating compatibility as a speed rating.
How to try official ray tracing
- Install or update Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition) and update Windows and your AMD graphics driver.
- Open the game’s Marketplace and look for worlds or content marked with the blue ray-tracing icon. Microsoft explains this identification in its ray-tracing guide. Compatible free worlds are available; buying a pack is not inherently required.
- Download and open a compatible world or apply its compatible ray-tracing resource pack as directed by that content.
- Check the world’s graphics or video settings for the ray-tracing control. Menu wording and availability can vary by build. Ray tracing will not automatically transform every ordinary survival world or texture pack.
The official Minecraft ray-tracing page describes selected Marketplace worlds as the way to experience the feature. If a compatible world does not expose ray tracing, work through the checks below.

If ray tracing is missing or greyed out
- Verify the edition. Use Minecraft for Windows / Bedrock, not Java Edition.
- Identify the exact GPU. Check Windows Device Manager or AMD Software. A generic “AMD graphics” listing does not confirm DXR capability; RX 6000 Series and newer is Microsoft’s named baseline.
- Check which adapter the game is using. On a laptop or a PC with integrated graphics, set Minecraft to use the high-performance Radeon in Windows Graphics settings and any relevant manufacturer controls.
- Update Windows and the AMD driver. An outdated or faulty driver can interfere with feature detection even when the hardware is capable.
- Test known-compatible content. Use a Marketplace world or resource pack marked for ray tracing. An ordinary world or standard texture pack may not enable it.
- Separate compatibility from performance trouble. If the feature appears but the game lags or crashes, lower render and simulation distance, test a standard compatible pack, and temporarily disable overlays or optional experimental graphics settings. Minecraft’s Bedrock performance guidance recommends reducing demanding video settings when performance is poor.
On a laptop, also make sure it is plugged in and not restricted by a power-saving mode. If ray tracing is available but the experience remains too slow, the problem may be the chosen resolution, pack, or settings rather than basic compatibility.
Bedrock ray tracing, Java shaders, and Vibrant Visuals
| Rendering option | Edition and nature | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Official Bedrock ray tracing | Built-in Windows Bedrock feature using DXR; requires compatible hardware and ray-tracing content. | It does not require an NVIDIA logo, but it is not available as the official Java mode. |
| Java shaders | Third-party shader packs and related rendering tools for Java Edition; compatibility and effects depend on the particular software. | They are not the same renderer or support path as official Bedrock ray tracing. |
| Vibrant Visuals | A separate Minecraft graphics feature. Microsoft’s current ray-tracing guide says ray tracing remains supported but has largely been superseded by Vibrant Visuals. | It should not be treated as another name for hardware ray tracing; availability and requirements depend on platform and current game support. |
Java’s ability to use modern graphics APIs does not change this distinction: the official PC edition page lists ray tracing under Bedrock, while Java’s separate graphics and shader ecosystem is not an official Bedrock-style RTX mode.
Do AMD players get DLSS?
No. DLSS is NVIDIA’s proprietary technology, so an AMD Radeon user should not expect DLSS controls just because Minecraft ray tracing works. AMD has its own technologies, but whether a particular upscaler is available depends on the current game build and rendering configuration; do not assume a specific in-game option without checking that setup.

Should you buy an AMD card for Minecraft ray tracing?
If you already have an RX 6000-or-newer Radeon, try Minecraft for Windows with compatible content before considering an upgrade. If you are buying a card specifically for this feature, compare the exact AMD and NVIDIA models on ray-tracing performance, VRAM, price, driver support, and the upscaling features you care about. Compatibility alone cannot establish which card is faster or better value.

Conversely, do not choose a Radeon solely because its family meets the documented baseline; actual performance and settings matter. Console hardware also does not provide the same documented PC ray-tracing workflow merely because it uses AMD graphics technology: Microsoft’s guide specifies a 64-bit Windows PC with a DXR-capable GPU.
