Yes. FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter transitions between rain recordings, while -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. They solve different problems: looping restarts a file, but does not smooth its ending into its beginning. YouTube Live also needs a continuing video track alongside the audio, and the broadcast remains live only while the encoder, host, and connection keep working.
How do I loop rain sounds on YouTube Live without a gap?
Build the audio and video as one ongoing output. For audio, choose between sequential recordings crossfaded into one another, a pre-rendered loop designed to join smoothly, or a single recording repeated as-is. For video, provide a still, animated, or looping visual that continues for the duration of the stream.
Crossfade separate recordings
FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter fades from one input audio stream to another over a chosen duration. Its documented example, acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp, is an illustration—not a universally suitable setting. Choose a duration and fade curves by listening to the recordings: rain texture, loudness, and the character of the transition all matter.
For an ordered sequence, connect the audio clips through a filter graph with a crossfade at each join, then map the resulting audio stream to the output. The graph depends on the number and length of clips, their codecs and channel layouts, and how you provide the video. FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes the controls and examples: FFmpeg filters documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Repeat one recording
To repeat a suitable input indefinitely, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option. Put it before the -i for the file it should loop. For example, the option order is -stream_loop -1 -i rain.wav. This repeats the file; it does not crossfade the end into the beginning. If that boundary is audible, prepare a loop whose ends meet smoothly or design a filter workflow that transitions at every repeat. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
Mixing rain layers is different
acrossfade sequences audio with a transition. If you want two rain beds playing at once, use a mixing workflow such as amix instead. Manage the combined level: FFmpeg’s documentation warns that disabling amix normalization can cause heavy clipping when inputs are not normalized. A mix that sounds gentle on each track separately can still peak when combined.

Which YouTube Live settings matter?
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the video bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; its recommendations vary with those choices. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring the output.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps. |
| 5.1 audio | 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. |
| Video frame rate | Up to 60 fps. |
Match the visual source’s frame rate and encoding to the stream configuration. A rain audio file by itself is not a complete YouTube Live output: keep a video track running for the full duration.

How do I stop a gap when one rain recording switches to another?
- Choose representative recordings. Use the actual files and channel layout you plan to stream; differences in loudness or tone can make a technically smooth transition sound conspicuous.
- Set a deliberate overlap. Configure
acrossfadefor the transition and select its duration and curves by listening. There is no documented universal best duration. - Listen across every join. Check for a dip, sudden peak, clipping, or an obvious change in the rain pattern. Adjust the transition or source levels where needed.
- Check the loop boundary separately. If a file repeats, listen to its end-to-start join. Infinite looping alone does not create a crossfade there.
- Test the complete output before going live. YouTube advises testing with audio and video similar to the planned stream. Listen in the ingest preview and on an actual viewer playback path; confirm the visual continues and check for ingest warnings or interruptions.
- Monitor stream health during the event. Watch YouTube’s messages and stream-health indicators. A successful test does not guarantee a later uninterrupted broadcast.
What can make a “nonstop” stream stop?
-stream_loop -1 keeps an input repeating; it does not supervise FFmpeg, restore a failed network connection, or guarantee that YouTube stays connected. The encoder process, host, and connection must remain healthy. FFmpeg and YouTube’s published guidance do not establish one universal recovery design for every host and setup.
- Playback ends instead of repeating: check that
-stream_loop -1appears before the intended input’s-i. - A click or audible gap occurs at a repeat: looping is not crossfading. Prepare a seamless loop or add a transition at the boundary.
- Clipping or a level jump occurs: lower source levels and review the mix. For overlapping beds, account for their combined level and
amixnormalization. - The crossfade sounds unnatural: adjust the duration and fade curves by listening to the particular recordings; the documented example is not a prescribed setting.
- YouTube reports an ingest problem: verify the selected codec, CBR output, keyframe interval, audio parameters, and resolution-specific video bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance. Check RTMPS configuration as well.
- The stream disconnects after running correctly: investigate the FFmpeg process, host, and network independently. Infinite input looping does not restart a failed process or recover a dropped connection.
Check rights to the recordings before streaming
Rain sounds may be your own recording, licensed audio, or material from another source. Confirm that your permission covers livestreaming and any intended use of the recording; an audio file being available to download does not establish those rights. YouTube’s encoder settings explain ingest requirements, not whether a particular sound recording is cleared for your use.
