Can FFmpeg Stream Bhajans to YouTube Live in a Loop?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. FFmpeg can repeatedly read a bhajan audio or video file and send it to YouTube Live. Use -stream_loop -1 to loop the file and -re to read it at its normal pace, then configure the output for YouTube’s current ingest requirements. The loop option does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: encoding capacity, internet reliability, stream health, rights, and YouTube’s own behavior still matter.

What you need to decide first

Before starting FFmpeg, decide whether the live stream will contain only audio or will pair the bhajan with a still image or moving video. Check that your installed FFmpeg can read the chosen file and identify its audio and video streams. The command and stream mapping depend on those details; the example below assumes an input with video and audio.

  • Choose the intended visual: source video, a still/background image, or another suitable video layout.
  • Check the source streams and choose output encoders and settings that your computer can sustain.
  • Confirm that you have permission to broadcast the specific recording and any visuals.

Configure YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for your channel.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming encoder help explains stream keys.
  3. Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements and bitrate table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than assuming one bitrate suits every output.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or shared commands.

Loop a file with FFmpeg

For file input, put input options before the relevant -i. FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1; it reads at the input’s native rate, which is useful when sending a file as a live feed. The -stream_loop -1 option requests an indefinite loop. See the FFmpeg documentation for option details.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "<YouTube stream URL>/<stream key>"

This is an illustrative command shape, not a tested, universal command. Replace the input and destination with your own values, verify the URL format shown in Live Control Room, and adapt mapping, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate to your file, FFmpeg build, and YouTube settings. In particular, the example’s encoder and audio bitrate are not a recommendation for every source or quality target. Check whether your FFmpeg build supports the selected output protocol and codecs.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Audio-only sources and custom visuals

If the bhajan file contains audio only, the example’s video encoder has no video stream to encode. You will need to provide a visual input—such as an appropriately prepared still image or video—and explicitly map the intended audio and video streams. If the source contains both, verify that FFmpeg selects the streams you intend to broadcast. The right inputs and mapping depend on the files and desired layout, so check the installed build’s output and test before going live.

Test the stream and keep it healthy

  1. Run a test using representative audio and visuals before the intended broadcast.
  2. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health panel for ingest errors or degraded quality.
  3. Make sure your upload capacity can sustain the total stream bitrate, including any backup feed. YouTube recommends 20% extra upload capacity as headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  4. Watch the FFmpeg process and the live dashboard while streaming. A looping input will not by itself recover from a read error, overloaded encoder, internet interruption, or a problem on the platform.

To stop, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer stream will be archived on the same basis. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.

Rights: looping a file does not clear the music

Technical ability to stream a recording is not permission to use it. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents and warrants that it has the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. The rights status of a particular bhajan cannot be determined without knowing the recording, arrangement, performers, publishers, territories, and license terms. Clear rights for both music and visuals before streaming or archiving. Read YouTube’s terms.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely issue What to check
YouTube does not receive a feed Wrong stream URL or key, or an output protocol unsupported by the FFmpeg build. Copy the current destination from Live Control Room, keep the key private, and verify RTMP/RTMPS support and URL format.
FFmpeg reports that a stream or encoder is unavailable The source does not contain the stream selected for encoding, or the installed build lacks that encoder. Inspect the input streams, adjust mapping and output codecs, and confirm the build’s encoder support.
Playback stutters or stream health degrades Upload capacity may be insufficient, the encoder may be overloaded, or the connection may be unstable. Check encoder load and network conditions, compare available upload capacity with total bitrate, and allow the recommended 20% headroom.
The loop works but the broadcast stops or degrades A source read error, encoding problem, internet interruption, or platform-side event can interrupt a stream. Review FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health; test the same source and settings before the planned broadcast.
The feed is rejected or does not match the intended quality Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or audio settings may not match the current YouTube requirements. Check the current encoder guidance and select bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate.
