Yes. An Android phone or iPhone can connect to an Xbox One through the Xbox mobile experience and Remote Play. You can manage the console, queue downloads, message friends, and stream games installed on your own Xbox to the phone. A compatible physical controller usually gives the best results. This is not the same as plugging the phone into the Xbox as an HDMI display or mirroring the console’s output directly.

What “connecting” your phone to Xbox One can mean

Choose the method that matches what you actually want to do:

Goal Best method Xbox One required? Subscription required?
Manage games, messages, friends, captures, and installs Xbox app or Xbox mobile web experience For console-specific actions, yes Usually no
Play games installed on your console Remote Play Yes Check current account and regional availability
Play supported games without using your console Xbox Cloud Gaming No Generally an eligible Game Pass plan, with applicable free-to-play or promotional exceptions
Use a phone as a console remote Xbox app or compatible accessory Usually Usually no
Use an Xbox controller with the phone Bluetooth or USB No No
Show the Xbox’s HDMI output on the phone No standard native Xbox One feature — —

Microsoft describes the current mobile experience, Remote Play route, and mobile features at Xbox.com.

What you need before starting

  • An Xbox One with current system software. Check Settings > System > Updates & downloads; Microsoft documents this update location at Xbox One system updates.
  • The same Microsoft account signed in on the console and phone.
  • The official Xbox app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or a supported browser at Xbox.com/play. Verify that the publisher is Microsoft Corporation.
  • A reliable network. Microsoft recommends 5GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 20 Mbps or higher for mobile Xbox play; that is a recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth streaming (Microsoft’s mobile guidance).
  • A compatible controller if the game does not offer touch controls.
  • Console device connections and game streaming enabled.

For first-time setup, put the phone and Xbox on the same home network. Guest Wi-Fi, captive portals, and router settings that isolate devices can prevent discovery.

How to connect your phone to Xbox One

  1. On the Xbox, press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > Devices & streaming > Device connections. Depending on the system update, the category may appear as Devices & connections.
  2. Turn on Allow game streaming to other devices.
  3. In the Xbox app settings, enable Allow connections from any device, or choose the more restrictive profile-only option if the console is shared. Microsoft’s Xbox One instructions are at this support page.
  4. Install or open the official Xbox app, then sign in with the Microsoft account used on the Xbox One.
  5. Keep both devices on the same home network and select the console/device option in the app or mobile experience.
  6. Follow the pairing prompt. If a code or QR prompt appears, enter or scan exactly what is shown. Labels vary by app version, region, and rollout.
  7. Open Xbox.com/play when prompted by the current experience and choose Remote Play. Older guides may describe a Remote Play button inside the app; Microsoft’s current public instructions emphasize the web route.

How Remote Play works

Remote Play sends video from your Xbox One to the phone and sends your controller input back to the console. The game normally needs to be installed and playable on that Xbox. The console must remain configured and reachable, and remote wake behavior depends on its power and network settings.

Remote Play is useful when the television is occupied or you want to play from another room. Away from home, performance depends on the Xbox’s home upload connection as well as the phone’s download connection, signal, and router behavior.

Touch controls exist for selected Xbox mobile and remote-play experiences, not for every Xbox One title. A controller is the safer choice for most games; menus may be comfortable with touch even when action gameplay is not. See Microsoft’s current feature notes at Xbox on mobile.

Pair an Xbox controller with Android or iPhone

Use a Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller. Microsoft lists compatible Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS support, with Bluetooth used on compatible mobile devices (controller specifications).

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. Turn on the controller and hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  2. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller.
  3. Start Remote Play after the controller shows as connected.

Some older Xbox One controller revisions do not include Bluetooth. Check the exact model rather than judging by appearance. A USB cable may work when the phone, adapter, operating system, and connector support USB OTG or the required Lightning/USB-C connection. A controller paired to the phone is controlling the streamed session; it is not simultaneously connected to the Xbox in the normal wireless-console mode.

Remote Play versus Xbox Cloud Gaming

Feature Remote Play Xbox Cloud Gaming
Game source Your Xbox One Microsoft’s cloud servers
Xbox One required Yes No
Game installed on your console Generally yes No
Home-console upload required Yes No
Game selection Eligible games available on your console Cloud-supported catalog and applicable free-to-play titles
Best use Continue your own console library remotely Play supported games without access to the console

Cloud Gaming has separate catalog, region, device, queue, and plan limitations. Microsoft’s current details are at xbox.com/cloud-gaming. Xbox announced U.S. pricing of $22.99 per month for Game Pass Ultimate and $13.99 for PC Game Pass on April 21, 2026, with regional prices varying; verify the checkout page before subscribing (Xbox announcement). A Game Pass subscription is not automatically required to Remote Play games you already own and have installed.

Can Xbox One mirror its screen to a phone?

Not as a normal direct display connection. The Xbox One does not ordinarily turn an iPhone or Android phone into an HDMI-style monitor. Remote Play is the practical, supported way to view and control console gameplay on a phone. Capture-card or third-party streaming arrangements are separate, more complicated setups and are unnecessary for typical Remote Play.

Troubleshooting

The phone cannot find the Xbox One

  1. Confirm the same Microsoft account is used on both devices.
  2. Put both devices on the same non-guest home network.
  3. Disable client isolation, VPNs, or network filters temporarily.
  4. Confirm the Xbox is online and that game streaming and device connections are enabled.
  5. Restart the Xbox, phone, router, and app or browser.
  6. Update the Xbox system and the mobile app or browser.
  7. Remove and re-add the console, then test with the phone near the router.
  8. If possible, connect the Xbox by Ethernet. Complete local setup before testing Remote Play away from home.

Family restrictions or child-account permissions can also limit connections. In a shared home, prefer the profile-only connection setting where it meets your needs.

Remote Play is missing from the app

Open Xbox.com/play and switch to Remote Play. Microsoft’s current route differs from older app instructions, and menus can vary by platform and rollout.

The picture is blurry or the stream drops

  • Use 5GHz Wi-Fi near the router.
  • Connect the Xbox to Ethernet if possible.
  • Pause large downloads and video streams on the network.
  • Test without a VPN and on another reliable network.
  • Remove battery-saving restrictions and keep the phone ventilated.

Mobile data use varies with stream quality, resolution, game, and network behavior, so there is no dependable universal gigabytes-per-hour figure.

Input feels delayed

Remote Play always involves a round trip: input travels to the console and video returns to the phone. Ethernet for the Xbox, 5GHz Wi-Fi for the phone, and a wired phone controller where supported can reduce variables. Turn-based and slower single-player games tolerate delay better than competitive action games.

The controller will not pair

  • Verify that the exact controller revision supports Bluetooth.
  • Disconnect it from the Xbox One or place it in pairing mode again.
  • Toggle Bluetooth on the phone and remove an old controller entry.
  • Check operating-system compatibility and try a supported USB cable or adapter.
  • Make sure a phone case is not blocking a plug-in connector.

Accessories that make phone-based Xbox play easier

Lowest-cost setup: existing controller plus phone clip

If you already own a compatible controller, a phone mount or stand is usually the most economical upgrade. It avoids buying a second controller; verify the clip’s fit and weight limits before purchase.

For accessibility setups, the Xbox Adaptive Controller acts as a hub for switches, buttons, joysticks, and other assistive inputs and works with Xbox One and Windows PCs. See Microsoft’s accessibility controller page. It is not a conventional phone-mounted gamepad.
