You can control a cloud computer running a YouTube livestream from another computer using remote desktop software. If the encoder is OBS Studio, you can also control supported OBS functions through its WebSocket interface without taking over the entire desktop. YouTube Studio handles a separate set of controls: stream settings, preview, and the go-live workflow.
Choose which part of the livestream you need to control
There are two control surfaces, and they do different jobs. The cloud computer runs the encoder and sends the video feed; YouTube Live Control Room manages YouTube-side settings and the platform’s preview and go-live workflow. Access to one does not automatically give you control of the other.

Method 1: Control the cloud computer with remote desktop
Remote desktop gives you access to the cloud machine’s desktop from your local computer. It is the more complete option when you need to interact with OBS directly, change settings, or use other software on that machine. The exact setup depends on the cloud host’s operating system and the remote-access provider it supports.
- Set up remote access on the cloud computer. Enable a remote desktop method supported by your cloud host and operating system, and configure its required access controls.
- Connect from your local computer. For example, AnyDesk’s documented connection flow uses the remote device’s ID or alias. Depending on how access is configured, you may enter an unattended-access password or wait for someone at the remote end to accept the session.
- Operate the encoder on the remote desktop. Open or switch to OBS and make the changes you need. Remote desktop controls the cloud computer; it does not replace YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room for the channel, inspect the incoming preview and stream status, and use YouTube’s controls for YouTube-side actions.
Check your cloud host’s current operating-system support and remote-access configuration before relying on a particular connection method. AnyDesk’s instructions are an example of a remote desktop workflow, not a requirement to use that provider.

Method 2: Control OBS with WebSocket
If you only need supported OBS actions, a compatible external application or script can use OBS WebSocket instead of controlling the whole desktop. OBS Studio includes WebSocket control by default from version 28 onward. The OBS Project documents control of scenes and sources through this interface.
- Confirm the OBS version. The built-in WebSocket interface is included in OBS Studio 28 and later.
- Enable and secure WebSocket access. Configure authentication and set a password. Do not expose an unauthenticated WebSocket endpoint to the internet.
- Connect a compatible external tool. Use it to perform the OBS actions it supports, such as scene or source control.
- Use Live Control Room for YouTube-side checks. WebSocket access to OBS does not show that YouTube is receiving the stream correctly or replace the platform’s preview and controls.
WebSocket is a narrower option than remote desktop: it can handle supported OBS control, but it is not a general way to operate the cloud computer.

Use YouTube Live Control Room for platform-side actions
YouTube’s Live Control Room manages stream settings, including the stream key and stream URL, and provides the preview and go-live workflow. The encoder sends the feed to YouTube. In YouTube’s documented setup flow, wait for the preview to appear and then click Go live when the stream is ready.
Channel permissions matter for sensitive actions. YouTube says a channel owner or manager is required to reset a stream key. After a reset, update the encoder with the new key so it can send the feed again.

Protect access and monitor the outgoing stream
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as like passwords: they tell the encoder where to send the feed. If one is compromised, use YouTube’s reset process and update the encoder.
- Authenticate remote control. Protect remote desktop access with a password or the provider’s access controls. For OBS WebSocket, enable authentication and set a password.
- Watch and listen, not just click. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live and monitor audio and video quality during the stream. A remote-control command can succeed even when the resulting feed has a problem.
