Can I play PS1 games on PCSX2? Yes—some can run, but PCSX2’s PS1 mode is highly experimental and unreliable. The PCSX2 project warns that games may have visual bugs or hang, and says this feature is not intended for general use. If you want dependable PS1 emulation, PCSX2 recommends DuckStation instead. PCSX2’s backward-compatibility documentation explains the limits.
Why can a PS2 emulator run PS1 games?
PCSX2 is designed to emulate the PlayStation 2. Its ability to run some PS1 games is a backward-compatibility feature, not a supported general-purpose PS1 emulator. The project’s documentation describes the feature as “highly experimental” and warns that overall compatibility is low. PCSX2’s project overview describes its primary purpose; its backward-compatibility page covers the PS1 implementation.
What problems should you expect?
A game might boot and still fail later or display incorrectly. PCSX2 specifically warns about visual bugs and hangs. An unofficial community compatibility list, posted in 2017 and edited through 2021, includes reports of boot failures, corrupted graphics or FMV, audio problems, memory-card trouble, and unresponsive controls. These are user reports, not official findings or guarantees for a current PCSX2 version. Read the community’s PSX Mode Unofficial Compatibility List.
There is no current, official title-by-title PS1 compatibility database established by these sources, and PCSX2’s published PS2 compatibility figures do not describe PS1 performance. Don’t treat a game’s appearance on the community list—or a PS2 compatibility percentage—as a promise that it will work in PS1 mode. PCSX2’s compatibility page concerns its PS2 library.

Should you use PCSX2 or DuckStation?
| Choice | Best fit | Support and reliability |
|---|---|---|
| PCSX2’s PS1 mode | You want to experiment with PS1 backward compatibility in a PS2 emulator you already use. | Highly experimental, not intended for general use, and not supported for PS1 games by the PCSX2 project. Bugs, hangs, or failure are possible. PCSX2 documentation. |
| DuckStation | You want an emulator for ordinary PS1 play. | Recommended by PCSX2 for people seeking a PS1 emulator. The cited PCSX2 documentation does not provide a measured head-to-head compatibility comparison. PCSX2 documentation. |
For most players, the practical choice is DuckStation. Use PCSX2’s PS1 mode only if you are comfortable troubleshooting a game-specific experiment rather than expecting a reliable play session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do you need to experiment legally and troubleshoot?
PCSX2’s project rules expect people seeking official support to own legally obtained games and a PS2 BIOS dumped from a PS2 they own. The project’s BIOS guide says the BIOS is proprietary, must be dumped from the user’s console, and is required for PCSX2 to play. These are PCSX2’s stated expectations, not a complete summary of copyright law in every jurisdiction. Do not download unauthorized game or BIOS files. PCSX2’s trademark and copyright policy and its BIOS-dumping guide provide the project’s guidance.

If you are troubleshooting PS1 mode, consult the current PCSX2 documentation before changing BIOS or compatibility settings. The backward-compatibility page includes a version-sensitive implementation note: for a later slim-console configuration, PGIF implementation is not yet supported and BIOS versions below 2.20 are required for now. This is not evergreen setup advice; confirm that it applies to your current PCSX2 version and configuration on the official page.
