Can I Switch Cloud Streaming Services Without Changing My YouTube Live URL?

You can usually keep the same YouTube live watch-page URL by preserving the scheduled event and changing only the cloud service’s ingest settings.

Usually, yes—if you keep the same scheduled YouTube event and change only the service sending its video feed. The public watch-page URL belongs to the YouTube event; the replacement service needs that event’s current ingest details, including its stream URL and stream key. If you create a new event instead, do not assume it will have the old event’s viewer link.

“YouTube live URL” can mean either the public link viewers open or the ingest address used by an encoder. They are different, and changing one streaming service does not automatically change the other.

Which URL do you want to keep?

Address What it does What to preserve or update
Viewer-facing watch-page URL Opens the scheduled or live YouTube event for viewers. Keep the existing YouTube event if you want to keep sharing its link.
Encoder ingest URL Directs a service or encoder where to send the video feed. Use the current Stream URL and stream key for the YouTube event in the replacement service.

YouTube says scheduled streams can be shared with viewers, and its encoder setup separates the Stream URL from the stream key. The key is a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address.” YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and scheduled-stream instructions explain these separate roles.

How to switch services and keep the existing watch-page link

  1. Keep the existing scheduled event in YouTube Studio. Use the event you have already shared rather than creating a replacement. YouTube’s scheduling workflow distinguishes reusing settings from creating a new stream; it does not say a newly created event inherits the old event’s watch-page URL. Review YouTube’s scheduling instructions.
  2. Open the event in Live Control Room and retrieve its current connection details. Copy the Stream URL and stream key for that event. If you reset the key, use the newly issued key: YouTube says the encoder must be updated after a reset. Keep the key private, as you would a password. See YouTube’s stream-key and encoder instructions.
  3. Configure the replacement cloud service’s YouTube destination. Enter the current Stream URL and stream key in the appropriate server and key fields. Confirm that the service supports the ingest method selected for the event.
  4. Check protocol compatibility where relevant. YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS ingest options. HLS is used for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, and the encoder or service must support the protocol you choose. Check YouTube’s ingest-protocol guidance.
  5. Test before the broadcast. Start a rehearsal or test transmission, confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room’s preview, then open the existing event’s watch page to verify it is accessible. YouTube recommends checking the preview and watch-page accessibility. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

What changes if you create a new YouTube event?

A new event is a different YouTube event, so do not count on it keeping the original watch-page URL. YouTube’s guidance covers creating or reusing stream settings, but does not state that a new event inherits an existing event’s viewer link. If the old URL must remain valid, retain the old scheduled event and connect the replacement service to it.

Common snags and what to check

  • The old watch page is still waiting or shows no feed: Confirm the replacement service is sending to the existing event’s current Stream URL and key, and look for its incoming feed in Live Control Room preview.
  • YouTube does not accept the feed: Check for a stale or mistyped stream key. If the key was reset, replace it in the service settings. Confirm the selected ingest protocol is supported by both YouTube and the service.
  • The replacement service asks for a URL: Determine whether the field expects the ingest Stream URL or the public watch-page link. The watch-page link is for viewers; the encoder needs the ingest destination and key.
  • You have already created a new event: Verify which event the service is feeding and which watch-page URL you shared. The new event’s link should not be assumed to match the old one.
