Minecraft says the editions use different servers, so friends need to choose the same edition to play together.
Why Java and Bedrock players can’t join the same game
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate multiplayer environments. Minecraft’s official edition guide explains that they use different servers and says players cannot play together through the usual setup. The official multiplayer requirements likewise specify that Java players join Java-hosted games, while Bedrock worlds, servers, Realms, and LAN games require Bedrock.

That remains true whether the host uses a personal world, a Realm, or a dedicated server. Hosting does not bridge the edition boundary.
Cross-platform play is different from cross-edition play
Players can play across supported devices within an edition, but that does not make Java and Bedrock compatible with each other.

Minecraft describes these separate platform groups in its edition guide and multiplayer requirements.
Can Bedrock join a Java Realm—or the other way around?
No. Realms follow the same edition boundary as other multiplayer games. Bedrock Realms are for Bedrock players on supported devices; Java Realms are for Java players on Windows, Linux, and macOS. A Bedrock player cannot join a Java Realm, and a Java player cannot join a Bedrock Realm. See Minecraft’s Realms information for the edition-specific options.

What if you own both editions?
Owning both editions lets you launch either one; it does not combine them into one multiplayer version. The Windows PC product, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, includes both editions, but a multiplayer session still runs in either Java or Bedrock. Friends must join the edition used by the host.
How to choose an edition your group can play
- Ask everyone which edition and device they use. Do this before paying for a Realm or setting up a server.
- Find an edition supported by everyone’s devices. If one friend has Java and another has Bedrock, the group needs to agree on a common edition that each player can run.
- Join a game hosted in that edition. Use a friend’s world, an edition-matched Realm, or an edition-matched server.
Minecraft documents separate official server setups: the Java server download is for Java Edition, while the Bedrock server download is for Bedrock Edition. Neither official setup makes the two editions interoperable.
