OBS lists MKV, MOV, and MP4 as supported video file types for Media Source, which is intended for individual files. VLC Video supports playlists and requires VLC installed with the same 32- or 64-bit architecture as OBS. The extension alone cannot guarantee that a particular file will decode: the codecs inside it matter. YouTube receives the encoded stream OBS sends, not the local playlist files.
Choose the OBS source that matches the job

To add a playlist, add a VLC Video source in your OBS scene, then select the files in its playlist properties. Check the source properties for order and playback behavior: OBS documents looping as on by default and shuffle as off by default. VLC Video also exposes settings for visibility behavior, caching, audio track, and subtitles. Labels and layout can vary with OBS versions, so use the source’s properties rather than relying on a particular menu location.
Why MKV, MOV, or MP4 may still fail
MKV, MOV, and MP4 identify container formats. A container packages encoded video and audio; it does not identify every codec or profile inside the file. OBS’s supported-extension list is not a guarantee that every file with that extension will play on every computer.
If a file shows a black screen, has no sound, or fails to load, inspect its actual audio and video codecs and profiles. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide explains format compatibility. Test the specific files on the computer and OBS/VLC installation you plan to use; a working extension is not a substitute for checking the media itself.

Set up and test the playlist before broadcasting
- Install the matching VLC build. VLC Video depends on VLC libraries. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. See OBS’s source requirements.
- Add VLC Video to the scene. Create the source and add each intended file to its playlist. Check the order, looping, and shuffle settings so playback behaves as planned.
- Preview every file and its audio in OBS. Confirm that video appears and sound reaches the expected audio mixer channel. Verify transitions between playlist items, not only the first clip.
- Run a YouTube test stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check stream health before the real stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Keep local playback separate from YouTube ingest settings
OBS decodes each local playlist item into the scene, then encodes and sends the resulting live stream to YouTube. You do not have to make every playlist file an MP4 merely because YouTube is the destination. The local source’s ability to decode a file and YouTube’s requirements for the incoming stream are separate compatibility questions.
Configure OBS’s outgoing stream for the ingest protocol you select. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, codecs, frame rates, keyframes, audio, and bitrate; it recommends RTMPS. The applicable settings depend on the protocol and stream goals, so follow the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than treating a playlist file’s container as an ingest setting.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest separately. Its HLS requirements include TS segments between one and four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. That transport playlist is not an OBS playlist of local movie files. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
