Not by itself, according to Owncast’s documentation. Owncast accepts an incoming broadcast over RTMP and serves it to viewers through HLS; the documentation does not describe a built-in playlist player, loop controller, or direct YouTube relay. To keep a playlist live on YouTube, you need a separate playout and encoder or relay that sends video to YouTube’s own ingest URL and stream key. Add Owncast only if you also want to host an Owncast viewing destination.
What Owncast does—and what it does not do
Owncast is a self-hosted live-streaming server. Its broadcasting guide describes accepting an RTMP feed, by default on TCP port 1935, with the stream key on the /live/ path. Its video pipeline processes the incoming source into short segments and delivers viewer playback using HLS; optional quality variants can also be generated. That is an ingest-and-delivery role, not playlist playback or automatic forwarding to another platform. See Owncast’s broadcasting documentation and video documentation.
Owncast documents ways to send a broadcast into its server: an OBS or Streamlabs custom-RTMP setup and an advanced FFmpeg guide. Those guides establish ingest options; they do not establish an Owncast playlist loop or a tested Owncast-to-YouTube relay. An HLS playlist URL shown in Owncast’s embed guidance is an output for compatible playback, not proof that Owncast can use it as a source and rebroadcast it to YouTube.
How a playlist can reach YouTube
The key is to keep the roles separate. A playlist-capable playout source supplies the video and audio; an encoder or relay plays or processes that source and publishes a stream to the intended destination. Owncast and YouTube are separate destinations with separate ingest settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions tell creators to provide the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. They do not describe Owncast as that encoder or as a relay.

- Choose where playback happens. Select a source or playout tool that can play your playlist continuously. The reviewed Owncast guides do not supply a playlist-loop recipe, so choose and configure the playout separately.
- Decide whether Owncast is actually needed. If you want your own Owncast viewing site as well as a YouTube stream, plan for an encoder or relay that can deliver to both destinations, if supported by your chosen setup. Do not assume that sending a feed into Owncast automatically republishes it to YouTube. If YouTube is the only destination, Owncast may not need to be in the path.
- Configure each destination independently. For an Owncast destination, use its RTMP ingest details and compatible broadcaster settings. For YouTube, use the stream URL and key provided for the destination in YouTube Studio. YouTube lets creators create a custom stream key for reuse; check the current key, privacy, and encoder settings in Studio. Never share a stream key publicly.
- Test the whole route before relying on it. Confirm that the playlist advances or loops as intended, that audio and video reach every intended destination, and that viewers can watch. Then test what happens after a source, encoder, server, or network interruption, and arrange monitoring and restart behavior for the components you selected.
This is an architectural outline, not a verified end-to-end Owncast playlist-to-YouTube configuration. Exact settings depend on the playout and encoder you choose, your source format, and whether you need one destination or two. Owncast notes that processing demand and server capacity affect performance; test against the hardware and network you plan to use rather than assuming a particular server size will suffice.
What “around the clock” requires
A continuous broadcast depends on every part of the chain staying available: the playlist source, the process that plays and encodes or relays it, the server if Owncast is included, and network connectivity. Owncast’s installation guidance covers running it as a background service and at startup, but service operation is not an uptime guarantee. Plan monitoring and a way to restart failed components; test interruptions deliberately before treating the setup as unattended.

Capacity matters too. Owncast’s video documentation notes that processing load and server resources affect delivery; higher demand can consume more resources and lead to slower delivery or buffering. Use a test stream to check performance at your intended output settings. No reviewed official documentation establishes a universal hardware specification or a guaranteed continuous runtime for this workflow.
YouTube eligibility, live settings, and archives
YouTube’s live-streaming tips say a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to be eligible. Confirm that your channel can go live before building the rest of the workflow, then verify the destination’s privacy, stream key, and encoder settings in YouTube Studio. Platform requirements can change, so consult YouTube’s current help pages when configuring the stream.

Do not confuse a continuing live feed with a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; that is an archive limitation, not a statement that YouTube necessarily ends a live stream at 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance. If preserving the complete program matters, plan a local recording or another deliberate archive method.
Also make sure you have the rights to broadcast every playlist item and that the stream complies with YouTube’s applicable rules. A technically continuous feed does not guarantee that its content will remain available or eligible for monetization.

Does Owncast automatically send its stream to YouTube?
No such direct relay is documented in the reviewed Owncast guides. YouTube has its own encoder URL and stream key.
