No—if you mean EA’s 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II, PC and Xbox players cannot play together online. The game has no supported PC-to-Xbox cross-play, and linking EA accounts, owning both versions, or creating a private match does not change that. There is also a different game called Battlefront II (Classic, 2005); its PC–Xbox cross-play status should not be inferred just because it has online multiplayer on both platforms.

The answer most players are looking for is about EA’s 2017 game. EA forum responses say that cross-play between platforms is not supported; the Xbox listing identifies that modern game and its November 17, 2017 release.

Why PC and Xbox cannot join the same 2017-game lobby
Battlefront II (2017) keeps multiplayer separated by platform. PC players match with PC players, Xbox players with Xbox players, and PlayStation players with PlayStation players. There is no supported setting, invitation method, or private-match option that joins the PC and Xbox player pools. This is a lack of implemented cross-play—not a setting you have overlooked.
That remains true whether the Xbox player is on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Backward compatibility does not turn the Xbox version into the PC version or merge their matchmaking. EA’s forum guidance explicitly answers cross-platform questions with no; see its cross-platform response and cross-play discussion.

EA accounts, cross-play, and cross-progression are different things
- EA account linking connects an account to EA services and can associate platform identities. It does not add shared matchmaking to a game.
- Cross-play lets players on different platforms join the same multiplayer sessions. The 2017 game does not support PC–Xbox cross-play.
- Cross-progression carries saves, unlocks, or progress between platforms. EA guidance says progress does not transfer between PC and Xbox in this game.
So seeing your friend in an EA friends list—or linking the same EA account to PC and Xbox—is not proof that you can invite them into a shared match. EA’s guidance on cross-play and cross-progression and on Xbox-to-PC progress transfer distinguishes these limitations.
Does buying it twice, using Steam, or subscribing to Game Pass help?
No. A second copy may let you play on another platform, but it does not combine matchmaking pools or transfer your unlocks. Cross-buy (one purchase granting multiple platform versions), cross-play, and cross-progression are separate features; do not assume one from the existence of another.

Steam versus the EA app does not change the platform answer: a PC storefront or launcher does not make a PC player part of Xbox matchmaking. The same applies to Game Pass. The Xbox store says an eligible Game Pass plan is required for online console multiplayer for the 2017 game, but that is an Xbox online-access condition, not cross-play support. It does not make a PC player compatible with an Xbox lobby, and this should not be read as a claim that the game is currently included in a particular Game Pass catalog.

There is no dependable, officially supported PC-to-Xbox workaround for the 2017 game. Treat claims about mods or unofficial tools enabling cross-play cautiously: they are not an established solution, and unofficial tools can carry stability, security, or account risks.

Check which Battlefront II you mean
The title is easy to confuse because it refers to both a modern release and a classic game:
- Star Wars Battlefront II (2017): EA’s modern game, with current-era presentation and modes. PC and Xbox cannot play together.
- Star Wars Battlefront II (Classic, 2005): the original Pandemic Studios game. Its Steam listing describes PC online PvP.
- Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection: a later package containing the 2004 and 2005 games, released for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch on March 14, 2024, according to StarWars.com. The Xbox listing confirms online multiplayer on Xbox. Those facts do not, on their own, confirm PC–Xbox cross-play.
If you are considering the classic games specifically to play with a friend on another platform, verify explicit PC–Xbox matchmaking support for the exact edition and platform before buying. “Online multiplayer” on separate store pages is not enough to establish that players can join each other across platforms.

What to do if your friend is on Xbox
- Use the same platform. For the 2017 game, both players should use PC or both should use Xbox if playing together is essential.
- Choose another game only after checking its current cross-play support. Platform policies can differ by game and change over time.
- Play separately and use voice chat if you want to stay social without sharing a lobby.
- Consider remote access only with care. It is not cross-play and can involve latency, ownership, subscription, and performance limitations.
Before spending money, identify the exact edition, confirm which platform your friend uses, and decide whether shared multiplayer is mandatory. Do not buy a second copy expecting it to transfer Xbox progress to PC or let the two versions play together.
